The initial material for breeding of a new hybrid of tomato F1 Zaur with brown colour of fruits, with high taste and keeping quality is presented. The heterotic hybrid is intended for growing in plastic greenhouses of farms and household farms of Russia. Its characteristic is given, including in comparison with the standard, hybrid F1 Intuition.

The goal was to include new accessions of perennial leguminous and cereal grasses to the collection, to evaluate them in terms of a set of valuable morphological and economic features and to identify sources of these features for breeding. Results and discussion. The collections of gene pool accessions created due to introduction of cultivars and wild forms as well as breeding accessions identified during practical breeding serve as initial material for the breeding of red clover, alsike clover and cock's-foot in the Institute of Agriculture of the Carpathian Region. For the period of 2000-2017, 944 accessions of forage grasses registered in the Central Database were included in the collection: 405 legumes (red clover – 161, alsike clover – 11) and 539 cereals (cock's-foot – 145); 591 accessions were stored in the National Depository. In-depth studies of morphological and economic traits of the accessions allowed us to create and to register a basic collection of the forage grasses gene pool, a trait collection of red clover for yield and resistance to powdery mildew (it includes 52 accessions from 5 countries), a trait collection of cock's-foot for yield and resistance to unfavorable factors (49 accessions from 8 countries) and to register valuable red clover accession No. 193 and cock's-foot accession Drogobychanka Piznia with the NCPGRU. Based on the collection accessions, varieties were created and included in the State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Dissemination in Ukraine: red clover Truskavchanka since 2016, alsike clover Prydnistrovska since 2002, cock's-foot Marichka since 2014. Since 2015, red clover variety Ukrainochka and cock's-foot variety Boikivchanka have been tested in the state scientific expert evaluation.Conclusions. The creation of the genetic resource collection allowed us to study and analyze the genetic potential of the species, to identify initial material with valuable economical traits, which will significantly increase the efficiency of fodder grasses breeding.

Abstract We introduced an experimental design that produced an “immortalized F2” population allowing for complete dissection of genetic components underlying quantitative traits. Data for yield and three component traits of the immortalized F2 were collected from replicated field trials over 2 years. Using 231 marker loci, we resolved the genetic effects into individual components and assessed relative performance of all the genotypes at both single- and two-locus levels. Single-locus analysis detected 40 QTL for the four traits. Dominance effects for about one-half of the QTL were negative, resulting in little “net” positive dominance effect. Correlation between genotype heterozygosity and trait performance was low. Large numbers of digenic interactions, including AA, AD, and DD, were detected for all the traits, with AA as the most prevalent interaction. Complementary two-locus homozygotes frequently performed the best among the nine genotypes of many two-locus combinations. While cumulative small advantages over two-locus combinations may partly explain the genetic basis of heterosis of the hybrid as double heterozygotes frequently demonstrated marginal advantages, double heterozygotes were never the best genotypes in any of the two-locus combinations. It was concluded that heterozygotes were not necessarily advantageous for trait performance even among genotypes derived from such a highly heterotic hybrid.

The article presents results of a study of phase composition and microstructure of initial material and samples obtained by selective laser melting of titanium-based alloy, as well as samples after heat treatment. The effect of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of specimens was shown. It was studied mechanical behavior of manufactured specimens before and after heat treatment at room and elevated temperatures as well. The heat treatment allows obtaining sufficient mechanical properties of material at room and elevated temperatures such as increase in ductility of material. The fractography of samples showed that they feature ductile fracture with brittle elements.

Pacific coast dogfish (Squalus suckleyi) were held 21 days in ice and in refrigerated sea water with and without added chlortetracycline, viable bacterial counts and volatile bases being determined periodically. Viable bacteria increased sharply after about 14 days but the muscle pH values showed little or no increase. No appreciable increase in the total volatile base or trimethylamine content of the muscle was noted until the fish were stored for more than 2 weeks, and then the increases observed were comparatively small.

The determination of apparent lactic acid has been used as a basis for a rejection test for raw milk. The method consists of precipitation of milk proteins with barium chloride, sodium hydroxide and zinc sulphate, and the addition of ferric chloride to the filtrate to produce the yellow colour of ferric lactate. Lactic acid is not solely responsible for the production of the yellow colour, which, nevertheless, gives a good relationship with keeping quality of milk (measured as hours to the C.O.B. end-point at 22° C.) and the values have been expressed as ‘apparent lactic acid’.The relationship of winter and summer milks to keeping quality has been studied, and a value of 0·03% apparent lactic acid in milk is equivalent to an average keeping quality of 5¾ and 8½ hr. for winter and summer milks, respectively. A value of 0·03% is recommended as the earliest value of apparent lactic acid at which milk could be rejected. The apparent lactic acid in colostrum and late-lactation milk and in milk from cows suffering from mastitis has been determined, and only in late-lactation milk were the values found to be significantly higher than usual in fresh raw milk, and an inverse relationship between yield and apparent lactic acid is suggested.Permanent glass matching disks have been prepared for use in a Lovibond comparator. This permits the intensity of the yellow colour produced with 1% ferric chloride to be determined and the apparent lactic acid in milk estimated.Grateful acknowledgement is made to the management and staff of the Dairy Department of the Reading Co-operative Society and the Farmer's Clean Milk Dairy, Reading, and local milk producers for supplying samples for experiments; to the N.M.T.S. staff in Reading for help in finding suitable farmers, and to the Dairy Husbandry Department of the N.I.R.D. for information about and samples of abnormal and late-lactation milk. Our particular thanks are due Miss Marie Gruber for technical assistance, to Dr N. J. Berridge for the suggestion and help on the work on pH change as an indication of keeping quality (given in the appendix), and to Dr A. T. R. Mattick for the advice given in this work.
