The analytical descriptive method is used in the study. Moreover, a questionnaire has been distributed randomly to 100 of the social studies teachers in the northern Governorates of the West Bank. The results of the questionnaire have been compiled, encoded and processed statistically using the program of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results of the study show that the role of social studies curricula in enhancing the national belonging among students, from the perspective of social studies teachers, were weak according to the arithmetic average that has reached (2.25). Furthermore, the results indicate that there have been no differences in the views of teachers, regarding the topic of the social studies curricula, depending on the various variables such as sex, place of residence, academic qualification, and years of experience. The researcher recommends strengthening the national belonging by activating volunteering among students, celebrating national events inside and outside the school, and creating awareness of the national events within the students by transforming national days from ordinary days to occasions commemorated by them, in addition to acquiring media coverage. Consequently, there is a strong necessity to prepare pre-service teachers and train them for teaching in order to be able to raise students' awareness of the national belonging. In addition, graduate students will become more enlightened and thoughtful.

A sense of shared Muslim suffering seems to play a key role in uniting Muslims around the world. Therefore, in the current paper we hypothesized that the social psychological underpinnings of Islamist extremism would be similar for Muslims living in the West and Muslims living in countries with prolonged and ongoing exposure to Western-led military interventions. Across 4 studies among Muslims in Pakistan and Afghanistan ( Ns = 425, 402, and 127) and Muslims living in 20 Western countries ( N = 366), we examined a path model in which group-based anger mediated the link between Muslim identification, perceived injustice of Western military and foreign policy, and violent behaviour intentions. Our results indicate that regardless of whether Muslims live in places with prolonged and ongoing experience of Western military interventions or not, the social psychological factors predicting violent Islamist extremism appear to be similar. We discuss implications for future theory and research.

This article explores the symbolism of the ceremonial torch relay and ceremony in the Olympics, and offers an analysis of its conduct in the Sydney Olympics, and its reporting in the media. The torch ceremony provides a striking example of what has been called ‘the invention of tradition’, which has undergone much adaptation from one Olympiad to another, in line with the cultural and sometimes political expression of the national identity of the host city. This article considers the symbols and values of national belonging built into the planning of the torch ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, and by closely following the media coverage it was given, principally in the national press, shows how news stories were generated in the tension between these symbols and values, and the social issues of the day.

The article argues that Poland’s mainstream national historical narrative, at least as far as the last two centuries of history of the country is concerned, is full of ‘traumatic’ motives which are regularly used and developed in diverse current political and intellectual contexts. Polish history is imagined to a large extent as an endless chain of 200 years of suffering, caused, among other things, by occupations, wars and exploitation, which are usually seen as not fully recognized in other countries, in particular in the West. The article attempts first of all to explain this specific nature of Poland’s historical identity by the privileged role of the intelligentsia, understood as a specific type of elite based on possession and control of cultural capital. It reconstructs the historical rise of the intelligentsia and its impact on the mainstream narrative in question, pointing to a selective choice of potential ‘traumas’ which are assigned a national status. They may be seen as tools to build positions in what can be called the Polish ‘field of power’, to use the notion coined by Pierre Bourdieu. The particular configuration and recent history of the field of power in Poland is reconstructed in order to explain different strategies of what can be called the social and political construction of historical traumas in Poland.
