scholarly journals Gothic tradition in N. V. Gogol's story “Portrait” (on the example of the works by G. Walpole, W. Irving, W. Scott, E. Poe)

The article is devoted to studying of Gothic tradition influence in the N.V. Gogol’s story "Portrait". The use of a typological approach allowed the author to identify some parallels not clearly outlined in scientific literature, between N. Gogol's short story "Portrait" and G. Walpole's novel "The Castle of Otranto", the short stories "The Adventure of the Mysterious Picture" by V. Irving, "The Tapestried Chamber, or The Lady in the Sacque" by V. Scott, and "The Oval Portrait" by E.A. Poe. As a result of a comparative analysis of these texts, the author of the article identifies the narratological techniques for creating an atmosphere of terror and horror, characteristic for Gothic literature, as well as the motifs of mystery, birth curse, retribution and a living portrait. The study also emphasizes the difference in the use of elements of Gothic poetics in terms of the evolution of the genre, from the emergence of the genre canon in G. Walpole's novel "The Castle of Otranto" to travesty in W. Irving's story by W. Irving "Mysterious portrait." Special attention is paid to the analysis of the motif of the living portrait, which is a plot-forming for all the considered works, which allows us to trace its transformation. In all works, the motif of the living portrait performs a story-forming function. In G. Walpole's novel the motif of a living portrait is closely connected with the motif of retribution. In the stories of W. Irving and W. Scott, this motif is a manifestation of the supernatural, Gothic element expressing the escapist nature of such literature. In the story of E.A. Poe the motif of the living portrait becomes ontological, which brings it closer to the story of Gogol. This study concludes that the connection of Gogol's "Portrait" with Gothic tradition was not with any certain representatives of it, but was typological in nature. The author of the article focuses on Gogol's creative reinterpretation of the Gothic tradition, which led the writer to artistic discoveries in the field of poetics.

The issue of conceptual correlation of Slavic stories about Savva Grudtsyn and Pan Tvardovsky with the concepts of “Faustian theme”, “Faustian legend” and “Faustian story” is considered. The question is raised about the legitimacy of referring the Slavic variants of the motive of the contract with the devil to the general group of similar motives by analogy with the “Faustian” one. A review of domestic and foreign scientific literature devoted to the difference and similarity of Slavic plots with the legend of Faust, as well as common sources and typological characteristics of the features of the “Faustian theme” is carried out. The results of a comparative analysis of texts about Faust, Savva Grudtsyn and Pan Tvardovsky are presented. Special attention is paid to the comparison of the anonymous work about Savva Grudtsyn with the novel by the Norwegian writer M. K. Hansen. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that for solve this problem a systematic literary methodology is proposed in the key of historical poetics, based on the differentiation of the analysis of plots, motives, the system of characters and semantic accents of works. The relevance of the study is due to the introduction into scientific circulation of previously poorly studied texts of literature and folklore, in which the plot of a contract with a demon is seen. The definitions of specific motives are given, which make it possible to differentiate literary monuments according to the principle of a plot model and a system of characters. The author's development in relation to the sources of the specified plot type is presented.

The aim of this study is to provide theoretical rationale for integrative model of motivation as a unified structure that ensures achieving different types of results of human activity. The methodology of this study includes induction and deduction methods, scientific literature analysis, as well as comparative analysis. There have been defined the notions of «motive», «need» and «motivation», in particular, we have identified major differences and similarities between these concepts as well as their points of contact. The motives have been classified into conscious and unconscious with subsequent justification of such division. The article discusses the difference between external and internal motivation and proves the particular effectiveness of the latter. There has been analyzed the structure of the human motivational system encompassing all its components such as interests, needs, values, attitudes, beliefs, stereotypes, etc. We have identified the basis of motivational system, which determines personality's orientation and its peripheral parts. There has been conducted a comparative analysis of major motivation theories, which explain the structure and significance of human needs, their relationship with motivation to act. For example, we found out that K. Alderfer's ERG paradigm corresponds to A. Maslow's hierarchy of needs paradigm in regards to the main groups of needs. However, most theories of motivation use different criteria for distinguishing needs which makes it more difficult to compare them. For instance, D. McClelland's acquired needs paradigm is based on identifying the needs for power and complicity, while Porter-Lauler model is based on analysing concepts of expectations and justice within the motivational system of an individual. However, all authors seem to agree on one thing: motivation is a complex system-based integrative psychostructure that encourages a person to perform various types of activities. Thus, we can conclude that despite various explanations of the concepts of «motive» and «motivation», different criteria for distinguishing needs and interpreting their impact on motivation, human motivational system is a holistic unified structure that affects human behaviour in a specific way.

The word Gothic refers back to the Dark ages in England. The Roman civilization was ruined by the Goths who were the barbarians at that time. As a result of the destruction of Roman Empire, the whole civilization underwent ignorance and darkness. Nowadays, the word Gothic has a variety of meaning and applications. Gothic novels portray exaggerated scenes, haunted castles, monsters and vampires. Scottish Gothic literature started after 1800. This paper will focus on one of the Scottish short stories by James Hogg, “The Mysterious Bride”. Some elements of Gothic and grotesque such as transgression of boundaries, suspense, uncanny and supernatural being are discussed within this short story in order to indicate Hogg’s main intention to use Gothic and grotesque elements in “The Mysterious Bride”. Among all the elemnts in Gothic and grotesque, this paper will mainly apply the presence of the opposites, uncanny, abnormal beings and supernatural events to James Hogg’s “The Mysterious Bride”.

From the fifteen short stories, the researchers took five main stories, namely the Karaban Snow Dance (Tarian Salju Karaban), The Fall of a Leaf (Gugurnya Sehelai Daun),  Canting Kinanti Song (Tembang Canting Kinanti), Jagoan Men Arrived (Lelaki Jagoan Tiba), and Origami Pigeon (Merpati Origami). Of the five short stories, environmental themes and honesty appear most often. The place setting depicted shows the environment that is close to the author or according to the author's origin. The main characters in the four short stories are children, only one short story Male Hero Tiban (Lelaki Jagoan Tiban/LJK) who uses adult takoh as the main character. The child leaders in LJK only appear in the past stories of the main characters. The five short stories do not show a picture of whole parents (father and mother). The warm relationship between mother and child appears clearly, in contrast to the father-child relationship that is almost negligent. The five short stories also represent how children become heroes for their family, friends, and environment.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pola narasi pada kumpulan cerpen Tarian Salju Karaban (TSK).
