scholarly journals Pragmatic and stylistic peculiarities of electoral discourse (based on the material of presidential TV debates)

Recently, studies of various types of discourse have been carried out in the context of their actualization in a situation of speech interaction considering cognitive and communicative factors, therefore this work is focused on the analysis of the functional features of electoral discourse. In modern linguistic works, electoral discourse is defined as an interactive speech and mental activity, limited by the institutional framework of the political sphere and controlled by a global communicative intention – influencing voters to retain power through self-presentation and creating their own positive image, as well as discrediting the opponent’s image. Among the problems that were considered by researchers in the analysis of electoral discourse are its constitutive features, communicative orientation, issues of genre diversity, determination of communicative strategies and tactics etc. However, the problem of the pragmatic and stylistic specifics of this type of discourse has not yet received fundamental coverage in the relevant works, which justifies the urgency of the given study. The material for the analysis was 1578 contextological fragments of video recordings of the presidential election debates between D. Trump and H. Clinton and D. Trump and J. Biden. As a result of the study, it was found that speakers use various stylistic means to achieve a certain pragmatic goal – self-presentation or discrediting an opponent. Among the most common means of creating a positive self-image are positively colored vocabulary, epithets, parallel constructions and repetitions. The most frequent stylistic means of implementing the strategy of discrediting the opponent are negatively colored vocabulary, epithets, parallel constructions, repetitions and metaphors. In this regard, we can state a qualitative similarity in the means of implementing both strategies; while quantitative data allow us to assert that a greater number of stylistic means are used to discredit the opponent, which creates a special expressiveness of such speech.

The article is devoted to the consideration of a poetic text as a communicative phenomenon with a high impact potential. The author defines the features of poetic communication, which is both mass and interpersonal, and its main goal, which is the poet’s desire to communicate author’s vision of the world and thereby change the picture of the reader’s world, achieving empathy from it. Based on the understanding of the speech strategy as a cognitive communication plan, a program for generating and perceiving speech, the author talks about the fundamental reversibility of text-generating and interpretative strategies and offers own classification of strategies and tactics that are most often used in modern poetry. In this classification, the main communicative strategies of self-presentation and rapprochement with the reader are associated with auxiliary discursive strategies of actualizing, dramatizing and dialogizing the text and programming interpretations by tactics for highlighting objects and situations using sound “gestures”, pointing to the referent, framing, directly introducing the reader into the communicative context, attracting the recipient’s attention through appeals and pragmatic instructions, interrogation, and some others. Particular attention is paid to the multimodality of interactions and its specific manifestations in poetic discourse. The study is based on the material of Russian poetry of the 1980- 2000s using the methods of intent and discourse analysis.

The selection and determination of appropriate learning strategies can improve the results to be obtained from the application of classroom learning models. This writing aims to discipline students to develop individual abilities of students to be more active in the learning process and improve the quality of learning. The learning process in Indonesia in general only uses conventional learning models that make students passive and undeveloped. In order for the quality of learning to increase, the Team Assisted Individualization learning model is combined with the task learning and forced strategies. The Team Assisted Individualization cooperative learning model is one of the cooperative learning models that combines learning individually and in groups. Meanwhile, task and forced learning strategies are strategies that focus on giving assignments that require students to complete them on time so that the learning process can run effectively. Students are required to do assignments according to the given deadline. This makes students become familiar with the tasks given by the teacher. Combining or modifying the learning model of the assisted individualization team with forced and forced learning strategies is expected to be able to make students more active, disciplined, independent, creative in learning and responsible for the tasks assigned. Therefore this method of incorporation is very necessary in the learning process and can be applied to improve the quality of learning in schools.

Formulae have been obtained that are necessary to calculate cumulative deformation in the process of straitened extrusion in the central area closed to the working end of the counterpunch. The general method of plastic flow proposed by A. L. Vorontsov was used. The obtained formulae allow one to determine the deformed state of a billet in any point of the given area. The formulae should be used to take into account the strengthening of the extruded material.

The article reveals the heuristic potential of social and humanitarian knowledge in understanding the complex nature of terrorism. The given research optics allows to expand traditional frameworks of considering terrorism as a phenomenon caused by political, ideological and economic factors; to reveal and substantiate deep cultural and mental reasons of the given phenomenon; make sense of terrorism as a destructive form of cultural identity. The cultural and historical origins of modern terrorism, which is closely connected with radical Islam, are analyzed in the civilizational system of coordinates “West–East”. The system of argumentation is based on scientific concepts and current artistic practices that interpret the causes of inter-civilizational tension resulting in international terrorism. The change of the status of the artist in the “epoch of terrorism” is analyzed; the theme of theatricalization and aestheticization of terrorist actions and the role of media in these processes are problematized. As a newest trend, which has not received any serious theoretical reflection, the text considers the phenomenon conditionally designated as “sublimation of terrorist activity into a symbolic sphere”, which is manifested in the destruction of monuments of world cultural heritage, in the orientation to culture as a new strategic object of terrorist attacks, on the one hand, and the use of cultural resources for self-presentation and promotion of their ideology by terrorist organizations, on the other

Abstract Drawing on Goffman’s (1990 [1959]) metaphor of stage, this paper considers Instagram a frontstage environment where users are cautious of being watched and attune their performance to how they want to be perceived via strategic self-presentation. This understanding of online performance is particularly pertinent in the discussions of bloggers who turn to Instagram to promote their work to new audiences. Examining the self-presentation practices of three fashion bloggers, this paper argues that to gain popularity on Instagram, bloggers utilize the features of formality and informality in the construction of an authentic and likable self-image. Since in the photographs the bloggers’ professional life is usually depicted as distant from their audience’s reality, the accompanying textual caption serves as a means of providing balance for the overall image the poster seeks to present. Consequently, the caption abounds with features of informality, which connote linguistic immediacy and imitate an intimate conversation with peers.

Abstract The paper is devoted to using ground penetrating radar (GPR) for the detection of tree roots in an urban area, since GPR allow detect the hidden objects in non invasive way. It is necessary exactly to know the growth direction, thickness and depth of the roots of the tree to confidently assert about the tree root influence on the technical condition of engineering objects and structures: of the buildings, of pavements, of roadway, of engineering communications and etc. The aim of the given research was experimentally to evaluation the possibilities of detection of tree roots in an urban area with the use of GPR on frequency 400 MHz and of algorithms of secondary processing of GPR signals. Results of interpretation of radar profile and evacuation of soil around tree show the possibility of detection of the tree roots and the determination of their parameters using one or two radar concentric profiles.

7-Amino-4-methylcoumarin-3-acetic acid (AMCA) has been found to be a useful fluorophore for immunofluorescence. The present study describes a spectrophotometric method for determining the ratio of moles AMCA to moles protein (or the f/p ratio) in an AMCA-conjugated IgG. The concentration of a substance absorbing light can be determined spectrophotometrically using Beer's Law: Absorbance = Concentration x Extinction coefficient. From Beer's law, one can derive the following formula for determining the f/p ratio of AMCA-IgG conjugates: f/p = (epsilon 280IgG).A350 - (epsilon 350IgG).A280/(epsilon 350AMCA).A280 - (epsilon 280AMCA).A350 where A is the optical density of the conjugate at the given wavelength and epsilon is the extinction coefficient of a substance at the wavelength specified. Using conjugates of model proteins, it was found that the extinction coefficients of the AMCA moiety of AMCA-conjugated protein were 1.90 x 10(4) at 350 nm and 8.29 x 10(3) at 280 nm. Similarly, it was found that the extinction coefficients of swine IgG were 1.56 x 10(3) at 350 nm and 1.26 x 10(5) at 280 nm. Thus, for AMCA-conjugated swine IgG: f/p = (1.26 x 10(5)).A350 - (1.56 x 10(3)).A280/(1.47 x 10(4)).A280 - (6.42 x 10(3)).A350 [corrected]. Based on this formula, the f/p ratios of some AMCA-IgG conjugates useful for immunohistochemistry have been found to range between 6 and 24.

A series of free-base corroles with different electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents were reacted with piperidine, 4-aminopyridine, 2-methylimidazole, 2-aminopyridine or pyridine in PhCN and the UV-visible spectral changes monitored during conversion of ( Cor ) H 3 to [( Cor ) H 2]- as a function of the concentration and strength of the added organic base. Analysis of the UV-visible spectral changes as a function of the added base concentration enabled calculation of equilibrium constants ( logK ) for deprotonation of each corrole under the given experimental conditions. Relationships are examined between the experimentally measured logK values and previously published spectroscopic and structural properties of the compounds.
