During a teaching career extending over twenty years in which the Writer has taught as a sole teacher, assistant in large town schools, headteacher of Maori school, as an itinerant instructor in Agriculture, and as an Education Officer with the Armed Forces, he has been struck by the frequency with which sweeping generalisations are made by many members of the teaching profession. Among these most frequently made are such as, "Boys like handwork better than do girls"; "Clever children prefer arithmetic to handwork." Such statements have aroused his interest in the matter of the child's alleged likes and dislikes for school subjects. If such likes and dislikes do ,in fact, exist, then it is felt that as teachers we should know what these are.

In the article we seek to address questions regarding the interest of graduates of a degree course in Natural Sciences and Mathematics in relation to the teaching career in basic education. The course enables its graduates to work in the subjects Science and Mathematics in the final years of elementary school and Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in high school. Our intention is to identify and reflect on the perceptions of these graduates about teaching, highlighting with this inherent aspects to the exercise of this profession in basic education. From the application of questionnaires to graduates of this course, we produced data regarding their performance in basic education, which enabled us to reflect on the national scenario in relation to the exercise of this profession. We could observe that the majority of the students participating in the research are not working in basic education and that the current scenario of devaluation of the teaching career exerts a significant influence in the decision making process of choosing or not the teacher profession for professional performance after graduation.

Abstract BACKGROUND Cushing disease (CD) comprises a spectrum of clinical manifestations secondary to hypercortisolism due to ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma. Transsphenoidal adenomectomy remains the standard treatment. Because of the significant rate of recurrence or persistence of CD, it is of interest to determine factors that may correlate with long-term outcomes following surgical intervention. OBJECTIVE The objective of our study is to determine the remission rate after surgery with special emphasis on factors affecting remission. METHODS Data of all patients undergoing surgery for CD from 2009 to 2017 was analyzed retrospectively. Transphenoidal resection was the preferred treatment with a recent trend in favor of endonasal endoscopic skull base approach. Post-operative cortisol level of < 2 μg/dL was taken as remission and value between 2 and 5 μg/dL as possible remission. RESULTS 104 patients operated primarily for CD were included for analysis. 47 patients underwent microscopic surgery, 55 endoscopic surgery and two were operated trans-cranially. Remission was achieved in 76.47% of patients. In univariate analysis, factors significantly associated with remission were (1) type of surgery (p=0.01); endoscopy (88.23% remission) better than microscopy (56.6% remission) (2) postoperative day-1 morning cortisol (p=0.004) and; (3) postoperative day-1 morning ACTH (p=0.015). In multivariate analysis, however only postoperative day-1 cortisol was found to be significant as predictor of remission (p=0.02). CONCLUSION Postoperative plasma cortisol level is a strong independent predictor of remission and value less than 10.7µgm/dl can be taken as cut off for predicting remission. Remission provided by endoscopy appears to be significantly better than microscopic approach.

Relevance of the article is based on participation of armed forces in various operations and exercises, where reliability of machinery is one of the most important factors. Transportation of soldiers as well as completion of variety of tasks is ensured by properly functioning technical equipment. Reliability of military vehicles – armoured SISU E13TP Finnish built and HMMWV M1025 USA built were selected as the object of the article. Impact of climatic conditions on reliability of the vehicles exploited in southwestern part of the Atlantic continental forest area is researched by a case study of the vehicles exploitation under conditions of the climate of Lithuania. Reliability of military vehicles depends on a number of factors such as properties of the vehicles and external conditions of their operation. Their systems and mechanisms are influenced by a number of factors that cause different failures. Climatic conditions represent one of the factors of operating load which is directly dependent on the climate zone. Therefore, assessment of the reliability is started with the analysis of climatic factors affecting operating conditions of the vehicles. Relationship between the impact of climatic factors and failure flow of the vehicles is presented and discussed.

Power sports have always been very popular among servicemen. This is especially evident in recent times, when such power sports, as armsport, crossfit, kettlebell lifting, powerlifting have received some development. The article presents a comparative analysis of the power capabilities of cadets who specialize in various power sports. The study involved male cadets of the 4th year of various faculties (n=53) of the Military Academy (Odessa), who in the process of training were engaged in power sports: armsport (n=12), crossfit (n=16), kettlebell lifting (n=15), powerlifting (n = 10). In addition, the results of cadets-athletes were compared with the results of cadets of the faculty of training specialists of airborne assault troops and military intelligence and special purpose, who did not attend sports sections of the academy (n=60). Analysis of the power of the cadets was carried out on the following exercises: pull-up, lifting by coup, lifting by strength on the crossbar, 24 kg kettlebell snatch, push-up on the parallel bars, push-up. The conducted researches testified to the high level of development of power qualities of cadets of all sections of academy in power sports. There was no significant difference between the results of cadets of different power sports in most exercises. It is established that the power capabilities of cadets who are engaged in various power sports are significantly better than those of cadets who are not engaged in sports. This suggests that any of the studied power sports can be an effective means of developing and improving the power opportunities of future officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

This chapter illustrates the author's struggle with stress and anxiety associated with the teaching profession. After conversations with colleagues, it is apparent that many teachers drive to and from school with knots in their stomachs, exhausting themselves with worry about students, parents, administrators, state standards, and more. As educators, we search to find balance between our school lives and our “normal” lives. We struggle to take a mental break from our jobs. In this chapter, the author uses a multigenre style to illustrate her anxiety and healing throughout her teaching career. Many authors write about the needs of the student, yet it is also worthwhile to explore the mental health of teachers. Teachers cannot best serve students if teachers cannot first take care of themselves. It is an idea that is often overlooked, and the author hopes this chapter may help educators who have experienced similar issues of anxiety in their careers.

Background: Permanent sterilization is a preferred method of contraception worldwide. In spite of popularization of temporary methods, it is used by 2/3rd of married women using any contraception. It has a low incidence of complications and failure rate and is cost-effective. Various socio-demographic factors play a role in acceptability of this method. It has an important role in controlling the total fertility rate.Methods: A retrospective record based analysis was done in armed forces personnel undergoing permanent sterilization operation over 11 years between 2005-2015 in a tertiary care institute. Analysis of trends in method choices of surgery, and comparison of the variables determining these choices was done. Year wise total fertility rates was calculated and the trend over 11 years was analyzed.Results: Permanent sterilization operations were performed in 2121 couples over the 11 years period. Of total operations, 1823 (85.95% with 95% confidence interval = 84.42, 87.38) were done in females and 298 (14.05% with 95% confidence interval = 12.62, 15.58) in males. Female sterilization acceptance ranged between 71.6% to 91.6% and male sterilization between 8.4%-28.4% with an increasing trend towards male sterilization acceptance over the years. Total fertility rate declined from 2.3 to 2.09 in 11 years.Conclusions: Increase in literacy rate of both the partners can positively impact the male involvement in permanent sterilization and control of TFR. This would help to stabilize India’s population growth. Also, a decline in son preference can be beneficial for decline in fertility rate.

Field experiments were conducted to determine optimum nozzle settings for applying glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] in the recirculating sprayer for postemergence control of johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense(L.) Pers.] in soybeans [Glycine max(L.) Merr.]. Herbicide sprays were directed across the row to johnsongrass growing taller than soybeans in July and August. Herbicide not sprayed on johnsongrass was trapped and reused. Glyphosate at 0.56, 1.12, and 2.24 kg/ha applied with commercially available 25° spray nozzles provided johnsongrass control and soybean yields equal to those following applications with specialized uniform droplet nozzles. Glyphosate at 1.7 kg/ha applied in the recirculating sprayer using only one nozzle per row provided control of johnsongrass equal to or better than that from applications made with two, three, or four nozzles per row. Soybean yield following application of glyphosate at 1.7 kg/ha with one nozzle per row was equal to yields obtained following its application with two, three, or four nozzles per row, with or without surfactant at 0.1% in spray solutions. Soybean yield was higher with four nozzles per row than with one nozzle per row when 0.5% surfactant was included in spray solutions. Soybean injury was lower and yield was higher when glyphosate was applied in the recirculating sprayer rather than over-the-top with a conventional sprayer. Glyphosate at 1.12 kg/ha applied in the recirculating sprayer caused more injury to ‘Hill’ and ‘Bragg’ than to ‘Forrest’ or ‘Tracy’ soybeans.

AbstractThere are many factors which make it difficult to relate instrumental CCD photometry to a fundamental standard system with an accuracy much better than about 1%. Here I will address only three of them: (1) infrared leaks in the filters; (2) the finite opening and closing times of mechanical shutters; and (3) changes in the air mass for long integrations. I will be approaching these subjects from the point of view of a visiting astronomer at someone else’s observatory, who gets three or four nights of observing time a year, and has only the afternoons preceding those nights to perform whatever tests can be carried out while the equipment sits on the telescope.
