The article analyzes current trends in the training of employees of the internal affairs bodies to counter extremism, as well as some methods of recruiting young people into extremist organizations, taking into account the socio-psychological characteristics of the modern youth environment, which were studied in 2019-2020 on the basis of the Moscow Psychological and Pedagogical University and the Academy of Management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. At present, the solution of the tasks of countering extremism by the police is carried out through the maintenance of a patrol-guard service, networks of stationary police posts, patrol stations and the comprehensive involvement of military personnel (employees) of the Federal Service of the National Guard of Russia, as well as public organizations and formations. The authors come to the conclusion that the effectiveness of countering extremism increases when it is possible to reveal the strategic and tactical plans of extremist groups; take proactive measures; to professionally prevent attempts to unleash mass riots that arise during rallies, marches, demonstrations, as well as during socio-political actions, interethnic and interreligious conflicts. The above directions that increase the effectiveness of countering extremism cannot be solved without thorough training of employees of the internal affairs bodies to counter modern types of extremism and their psychological adaptation to new threats.

The purpose of this article is to present an empirically-derived psychological readiness model of military personnel to take risks during combat deployment. The model was developed using the methods of semantic differential, peer review, and factor analysis. Its theoretical basis is the concept of “hardiness”. The study involved 104 military personnel of the National Guard of Ukraine had combat experience in the War in Eastern Ukraine. The model includes four components: “Ability for volitional efforts (mobilization)”, “Military brotherhood”, “Professional identity”, “Self-control (endurance)”. Their content covers the emotional-volitional, cognitive, motivational, moral, active-practical, existential-being, and interpersonal-social spheres of the individual. The leading role in the model belongs to strong-willed features, combat cohesion, patriotism, and adaptive resources of the individual, which make it possible to maintain the effectiveness of military personnel’s combat activities under conditions of risk. The basis of the psychological readiness of military personnel to actively act and overcome difficulties in conditions of risk (uncertainty, direct threat to health and life) with the absence of reliable guarantees for success is hardiness. It is suggested that the model can be used for psychological selection procedures, professional and psychological training of military personnel, predicting their behavior under conditions of risk, and developing strategies for psychological support in the post-deployment period. This will reduce psychogenic losses during hostilities.

Abstract. Background: Although financial strain is an identified risk factor for suicide among US military personnel, research is limited regarding the specific dimensions of financial strain that confer the greatest risk. Aims: The present study examined the associations among multiple indicators of financial strain, suicide ideation, and suicide attempts in a sample of US National Guard personnel, a high-risk subgroup of the US military. Method: National Guard personnel from Utah and Idaho ( n = 997) completed an anonymous online self-report survey. Weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to test hypothesized associations. Results: Lifetime history of suicide ideation was significantly more common among participants reporting recent income decrease, credit problems, and difficulty making ends meet, even when adjusting for other covariates. Lifetime history of suicide attempt was significantly associated with recent foreclosure or loan default, credit problems, and difficulty making ends meet, but only in univariate analyses. Recent credit problems were the only financial strain indicator that significantly predicted a history of suicide attempt among participants with a history of suicide ideation. Limitations: The present study includes self-report methodology and cross-sectional design. Conclusion: Although multiple indicators of financial strain are associated with increased risk for suicidal thinking among National Guard military personnel, credit problems had the strongest association with suicide attempts.
