Students’ mistakes in solving the mathematical word problem is still a problem so it must be identified for each stage of solving. It is done so that the solutions offered are more effective. One way to identify the stage of solving of mathematical problem is the Newman Error Analysis stage. So the purpose of this research is to describe the ability of students of Islamic Junior High School to solve mathematical problems in the form of word problem and to describe the mistakes of high-ability Islamic High School students in mathematical word problem based on Newman Error Analysis. The approach used is qualitative descriptive. The research subject is the high-ability in Islamic Junior High School of Jambi City. Students are asked to work on solving questions in the form of word problems. Then the student interviewed about the mistakes that were made when solving the word problems given for each of the stages. The results showed 56% of high-ability students encountered an error while solving the algebra operation and 44% of high-ability students encountered an error while solving Pythagoras theorem. As for the errors that occur in high-ability students if in the analysis based on the stage of Newman Error Analysis occurs at the stage of understanding the problem (comprehension) and the problem transformation (transformation). Of course, errors in the comprehension and transformation cause errors at a later stage so that the solution or answer found is worth wrong.     Keywords: Error, Newman Error Analysis, Mathematical Word Problem.

Mathematics is often become the frightening subjects for students. Mathematics is considered as something which is difficult to solve. One of the elementary schools mathematics materials which is considered difficult is fractions. Not only students who consider fractions as difficult material but also teachers admit it as well. Teachers feel difficult in teaching fractions to students. Basic concept of fractions which is difficult for the student to grasp, would become even more complex if it is delivered in the form of word problem. In solving word problems students do not only need mathematic skills but also language skills. This research is aimed to analyze students learning difficulties in solving fractions word problem. This research is a qualitative research. The method of analysis used in this research is Newman method. The results of the research show that students faced difficulties in solving fractions word problems because (1) it is difficult for the students to understand the question and to translate it into mathematical sentence, (2) it is difficult for the students to determine the operation used in the word problems, (3) students are not accustomed to, thus they forget to write the conclusion/write the conclusion without the unit in every answers.

This paper focuses on difficulties that primary school students have in facing mathematical word problems. In particular, we are interested in exploring how they develop in the transition from grade 2 to grade 5. The research basis of the hypothesis is that some difficulties detected in grade 5 are already predictable in grade 2. Starting from the data collected in grade 5 by the National Standardized Assessment, we carry out a quantitative analysis looking for word problems in which students experience difficulties. Subsequently, we conduct a backward analysis of the grade 2 test of the same cohort of students in order to identify a set of word problems linked with those selected in grade 5 test. The analysis shows the presence of many common difficulties in the two grades. We design and carry out specific educational activities concerning word problem-solving in grade 2. These activities produce positive changes in the experimental class compared to the control class. This could suggest that a previous intervention in grade 2 could allow overcoming future difficulties in word problem text comprehension in grade 5.

Analysis of students' errors in solving mathematical word problems based on Watson's criteriaAbstractThis study aimed to describe the errors made by students in solving mathematical word problems according to Watson’s criteria as well as factors that cause students to do that errors. This study was a qualitative descriptive study involved 44 seventh graders of MTs Yapik Sindangjawa, Cirebon, Indonesia as the subjects of this study. Data of error types and factors that lead students to do such errors in solving mathematical word problems were collected using the test of solving mathematical word problems and interview guidelines. The results showed that the subjects made various errors from the eight types of errors that exist in Watson's criteria. The types of errors that often made by students were Inappropriate Procedure (IP) namely using inappropriate procedures; Omitted Conclusion (OC) namely students not writing conclusions; and Above Other (AO) namely making other mistakes such as not giving a response towards the given problem. The type of error that was rarely made by students was Response Level Conflict (RLC), where students try to solve the problem but produce less logical conclusions. Some of the factors that cause students to do some errors in solving mathematical word problems namely students do not know the formula to be used to solve the given problems, lack of time to solve all problems of the test, and students think that the mathematical word problem was difficult to be solved.
