The ‘Solidarity’ logo designed by Jerzy Janiszewski in 1980 is one of the best -known Polish symbols of all time. In the 1980s, it was widely reproduced on various materials, especially including ‘popular’ works, namely samizdat, such as leaflets, banknotes, post stamps and cards, posters, also pins, or even… towels etc. They were essential information carriers evidencing that the underground organizations were still dynamically operating. This article is mainly an analysis of such ‘popular’ works which contain the ‘Solidarity’ logo. This symbol is set in various contexts: independently, in combinations with slogans or graphics, also as, e.g., editor’s signature etc. Nevertheless, they are not always the exact imitations of the ‘Solidarity’ sign; various factors led to a wide range of modifications (which were unintentional, such as imprecise copies of the letters) and transformations (which were intentional, such as representing the letters as people). This review is enriched with references to several contemporary works using the ‘Solidarity’ logo. They prove how the meanings of the ‘Solidarity’ sign have changed over the years: in the 1980s, it was the symbol of society united beyond different ideologies to fight against the communist regime; today, it is a symbol of groups united under common demands, which, however, might not be approved and shared by every Pole.

Multi-role dialogue understanding comprises a wide range of diverse tasks such as question answering, act classification, dialogue summarization etc. While dialogue corpora are abundantly available, labeled data, for specific learning tasks, can be highly scarce and expensive. In this work, we investigate dialogue context representation learning with various types unsupervised pretraining tasks where the training objectives are given naturally according to the nature of the utterance and the structure of the multi-role conversation. Meanwhile, in order to locate essential information for dialogue summarization/extraction, the pretraining process enables external knowledge integration. The proposed fine-tuned pretraining mechanism is comprehensively evaluated via three different dialogue datasets along with a number of downstream dialogue-mining tasks. Result shows that the proposed pretraining mechanism significantly contributes to all the downstream tasks without discrimination to different encoders.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short noncoding RNAs (20–25 nucleotides) that regulate gene expression posttranscriptionally. However, identification and characterization of miRNAs remain limited for conifer species. In this study, we applied transcriptome-wide miRNAs sequencing to a conifer species Platycladus orientalis, which is highly adaptable to a wide range of environmental adversities, including drought, barren soil, and mild salinity. A total of 17,181,542 raw reads were obtained from the Illumina sequencing platform; 31 conserved and 91 novel miRNAs were identified, and their unique characteristics were further analyzed. Ten randomly selected miRNAs were validated by quantificational real-time polymerase chain reaction. Through miRNA target predictions based on psRNATarget, 2331 unique mRNAs were predicted to be targets of P. orientalis miRNAs that involved in 187 metabolic pathways in KEGG database. These targets included not only important transcription factors (e.g., class III homeodomain leucine zipper targeted by por-miR166d) but also indispensable nontranscriptional factor proteins (i.e., por-miR482a-3p regulated nucleotide-binding site leucine-rich repeat protein). Interestingly, six miRNAs (por-miR16, -miR44, -miR60-5p, -miR69–3p, -miR166b-5p, and -miR395c) were found in adaptation-related pathways (e.g., drought), indicating their possible involved in this species’ stress-tolerance characteristics. The present study provided essential information for understanding the regulatory role of miRNAs in P. orientalis and sheds light on their possible use in tree improvement for stress tolerance.

Abstract PVT analysis of reservoir fluid samples provides essential information for determining hydrocarbon in place, depletion strategy, and hydrocarbon flowability. Hence, quality checking (QC) is necessary to ensure the best representative sample for further analysis. Recently, a novel tool based on Equation of State (EOS) was introduced to tackle the limitation of the Hoffmann method for surface samples with high impurities and heavier components. This paper presents comprehensively evaluating a novel EOS-based method using various PVT data from Malaysian fields. Numerous PVT separator samples from 30 fields with various reservoir fluids (Black Oil, Volatile, and Gas Condensate) were carried out and evaluated. The impurities contain a wide range of up to 60%. The 2-phase P-T (pressure and temperature) diagram of each oil and gas phase before recombination was calculated using PVT software based on Equation of State (EOS). The 2-phase P-T diagram was created and observed the intersection point as calculated equilibrium at separator conditions. Once it is observed and compared with written separator condition in the laboratory report and observed its deviation. Eventually, the result will be compared with the Hoffmann method. The Hoffmann method is well-known as a traditional QC method that was initially developed using gas condensate PVT data to identify possible errors in measured separator samples. If the sample has high impurities and/or heavier components, the Hoffmann method will only show a straight line to the lighter components and those impurities and heavier components will be an outlier that engineers will misinterpret that it has errors and cannot be used for further analysis such PVT characterization. The QC using EOS-based were conducted using actual fields data. It shows potential as novel QC tools but observed only less than 10% of data with complete information that can meet intersection points located precisely similar with reported in the laboratory. There is some investigation and evaluation of the EOS-based QC method. First, most of the molecular weight of the heavier fluid composition of gas and oil phase was not reported or used assumptions especially when its mole fraction is not zero. Second, properties of heavier components of the oil phase (molecular weight and specific gravity) were not measured and assumed similar as wellstream. Third, pressure and temperature data are inconsistent between the oil and gas phase at the separator condition. This study can provide improvement in laboratory measurement quality and help engineers to have a better understanding of PVT Report, essential data requirements, and assumptions used in the laboratory. Nevertheless, the Hoffmann method can be used as an inexpensive QC tool because it can be generated in a spreadsheet without a PVT software license. Both combination techniques can provide a comprehensive evaluation for separator samples with high impurities before identifying representative fluid for further analysis.

Cygnus X-3 binary system is a famous object studied over the wide range of electromagnetic spectrum. Early detections of ultra-high energy gamma-rays from Cygnus X-3 by Kiel, Havera Park and then by Akeno triggered the construction of several large air shower detectors. Also, Cygnus X-3 has been proposed to be one of the most powerful sources of charged cosmic ray particles in the Galaxy. The results of twenty-year observations of the Cyg X-3 binary at energies 800 GeV - 85 TeV are presented with images, spectra during periods of flaring activity and at low flux periods. The correlation of TeV flux increases with flaring activity at the lower energy range of X-ray and radio emission from the relativistic jets of Cygnus X-3 is found as well as 4.8-hour orbital modulation of TeV γ-ray intensity. Detected modulation of TeV γ-ray emission with orbit and important characteristics of Cyg X-3 such as the high luminosity of the companion star and the close orbit leads to an efficient generation of γ-ray emission through inverse Compton scattering in this object. The different type variability of very high-energy γ-emission and correlation of radiation activity in the wide energy range can provide essential information on the mechanism of particle production up to very high energies.

AbstractThis article underlines with examples of studies for energy related materials and processes how important and useful the technique of neutron imaging can be for our future energy supply. With the help of the particularly designed configurations for each such study it becomes possible to derive essential information for the material properties and their change in a non-invasive manner.The four mentioned examples (PEM fuel cell, Li-battery, hydrogen storage and nuclear fuel inspection) cover a very wide range of applications and demonstrate the high potential of the various used methods in neutron imaging.

Early resolution of uncertainty during an epidemic outbreak can lead to rapid and efficient decision making, provided that the uncertainty affects prioritization of actions. The wide range in caseload projections for the 2014 Ebola outbreak caused great concern and debate about the utility of models. By coding and running 37 published Ebola models with five candidate interventions, we found that, despite this large variation in caseload projection, the ranking of management options was relatively consistent. Reducing funeral transmission and reducing community transmission were generally ranked as the two best options. Value of information (VoI) analyses show that caseloads could be reduced by 11% by resolving all model-specific uncertainties, with information about model structure accounting for 82% of this reduction and uncertainty about caseload only accounting for 12%. Our study shows that the uncertainty that is of most interest epidemiologically may not be the same as the uncertainty that is most relevant for management. If the goal is to improve management outcomes, then the focus of study should be to identify and resolve those uncertainties that most hinder the choice of an optimal intervention. Our study further shows that simplifying multiple alternative models into a smaller number of relevant groups (here, with shared structure) could streamline the decision-making process and may allow for a better integration of epidemiological modeling and decision making for policy.

<p class="Abstract"><span lang="EN-US">Today a very wide range of different applications relies on the Digital to Analog Converters (DACs). Different DAC architectures have been developed in the years and several different specifications exist to quantify their effective performance, essential information to verify the requirement fulfilling and the DAC suitability for the specific application.  As a result, DAC testing has assumed and continues to assume increasing importance. Main testing challenges include the reduction of the test time and cost, the measurement uncertainty computation and facing with the emerging Built-In Self-Test (BIST) solutions. To unambiguously clarify DAC terms, definitions and test methods the IEEE Std. 1658 has been developed and is currently under revision. To highlight the trends and issues also providing useful information for the revision of the standard, the paper presents an overview of the recent research work dealing with the DAC testing.</span></p><p class="Abstract"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>

Abstract Background The interpretation of results from transcriptome profiling experiments via RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) can be a complex task, where the essential information is distributed among different tabular and list formats—normalized expression values, results from differential expression analysis, and results from functional enrichment analyses. A number of tools and databases are widely used for the purpose of identification of relevant functional patterns, yet often their contextualization within the data and results at hand is not straightforward, especially if these analytic components are not combined together efficiently. Results We developed the software package, which serves as a comprehensive toolkit for streamlining the interpretation of functional enrichment analyses, by fully leveraging the information of expression values in a differential expression context. is implemented in R and Shiny, leveraging packages that enable HTML-based interactive visualizations for executing drilldown tasks seamlessly, viewing the data at a level of increased detail. is integrated with the core classes of existing Bioconductor workflows, and can accept the output of many widely used tools for pathway analysis, making this approach applicable to a wide range of use cases. Users can effectively navigate interlinked components (otherwise available as flat text or spreadsheet tables), bookmark features of interest during the exploration sessions, and obtain at the end a tailored HTML report, thus combining the benefits of both interactivity and reproducibility. Conclusion is distributed as an R package in the Bioconductor project (https://bioconductor.org/packages/GeneTonic/) under the MIT license. Offering both bird’s-eye views of the components of transcriptome data analysis and the detailed inspection of single genes, individual signatures, and their relationships, aims at simplifying the process of interpretation of complex and compelling RNA-seq datasets for many researchers with different expertise profiles.

The first in-depth study of the society and culture of Roman and late antique Egypt that uses everyday artefacts as its principal source of evidence, this book transforms our understanding of many aspects of its society and culture. It represents a fundamental reference work for scholars, with much new and essential information on a wide range of artefacts, many of which are found not only in Egypt, but also in the wider Roman and late antique world. It also sets out a new interpretation of everyday life and aspects of social relations in Egypt in the period under study. By taking a social archaeology approach, it contributes substantial insights into everyday practices and their social meanings in the past. Artefacts from UCL’s Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology are the principal source of evidence. Most of these objects have not been the subject of any previous research. The book integrates the close study of artefact features with other sources of evidence, including papyri and visual material. There are two principal parts to the book, Part I: ‘Exploring the Social Functions of Dress Objects’, and Part II: ‘The Domestic Realm and Everyday Experience’. An important theme is the life course, and how both dress-related artefacts and ordinary functional objects construct age and gender-related status, and facilitate appropriate social relations and activities. There is also a particular focus on wider social experience in the domestic context. Other topics covered include economic and social changes across the period studied.

ABSTRACT In 2015 and 2016, two complementary projects produced both a new strategic guide (in two versions) and an updated operationally oriented guide to assist managers, regulators and responders in responding effectively to oil spills in snow and ice conditions. The objective of the first initiative, which began as a Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) project, a “Guide to Oil Spill Response in Snow and Ice Conditions”, was to identify and describe the strategic aspects of planning and operations. This program gained a separate phase through the Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response (EPPR) working group of the Arctic Council to adapt the Guide specifically for Arctic waters. The second initiative by EPPR was to update the 1998 “Field Guide for Oil Spill Response in Arctic Waters” while retaining the original operational focus. The 2016 version of the Field Guide incorporates major revisions and updates to sections on strategies and countermeasures, for example the use of herders and burning, dispersants in ice and specialized brush skimmers as well as advances in remote sensing and tracking. In addition, new sections address important topics such as Health and Human Safety, Logistics and Wildlife Response. The overall goal was to produce two complementary documents that provide a broad base of essential information to key decision-makers and responders at both the strategic planning level and at the field tactics and operations level. These two projects bring together a wide range of new knowledge generated over the past two decades that make many previous manuals and documents out of date. With such a vast amount of recent literature, the new strategic guide and the operational field guide update can only provide a brief summary of the new material but are valuable tools to indicate where the more detailed documents can be found.
