Certain evaluation criteria have emerged frequently from the published literature on Holocaust film. This suggested that it might have been possible to establish a list of such criteria, to provide a framework for the evaluation of Holocaust films. A Delphi survey of United Kingdom Holocaust Studies experts was used to investigate this possibility. The survey elicited in-depth opinions from the experts, which the researcher analysed in order to conclude that evaluating the success of a Holocaust film is dependent upon the subjective interpretation of the individual viewer. This article concentrates upon the methodology used in this study, examining the suitability of the Delphi Method as a tool for rich qualitative research.

This chapter discusses three ongoing issues related to the evaluation of qualitative research. First, the chapter considers whether a set of evaluation criteria is either determinative or changeable. Due to the evolving nature of qualitative research, it is likely that the way in which qualitative research is evaluated can change—not all at once, but gradually. Second, qualitative research has been criticized by newly resurrected positivists whose definitions of scientific research and evaluation criteria are narrow. “Politics of evidence” and a recent big-tent evaluation strategy are examined. Last, this chapter analyzes how validity criteria of qualitative research are incorporated into the evaluation of mixed methods research. The elements of qualitative research seem to be fairly represented but are largely treated as trivial. A criterion, the fit of research questions to design, is identified as distinctive in the review guide of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research.

Quality function deployment (QFD) is an essential tool in implementing total quality management (TQM). This study applies a Web-QFD approach using group decision-making analysis in the Web environment to reduce the complicated data collection, aggregation and analysis processes. A Web-based questionnaire is designed by using an active service pages (ASP) involving the Internet relay chat (IRC) technique and the Delphi method with Internet (E-Delphi) to determine the importance degree of the customers' requirements. However, the traditional Delphi method is time-consuming mission. This study applies the proposed Web-QFD approach to efficiently gather the individual opinions of each team member, the requirements that are critical for customers, and then enables decision makers to accurately assess the priorities of these requirements. An empirical example of an education system in Taiwan is employed to demonstrate the practicability of the proposed Web-QFD model. This real world example involves team members communicating easily and quickly with other experts in the team through the Internet to accelerate the reaching of a consensus among multiple decision makers regardless of where their location. Customers' requirements can be rapidly prioritized based on the assessment results.

ABSTRACTThis article, in which we examine developments in public expenditure on social policy in relation to total public spending in the United Kingdom (UK) in the period after the Second World War, is part of a larger international study on developments in social welfare spending on which we are currently engaged.In Section 1 we briefly sketch in the theoretical background to the study of public expenditure growth in general and social welfare spending in particular. We shall not in this article attempt to evaluate the validity of the competing hypotheses – this exercise is in hand as part of the international study, and we shall report the findings at a later date. Section 2 examines the growth of public expenditure in the UK at the aggregate level. In Section 3 we analyse public expenditure at the individual programme level and in Section 4 we summarize the conclusions.

These conditions are seen within the United Kingdom (UK) Armed Forces population at home and abroad and may endanger life, with significant implications for both the individual and the chain of command. Recognition and management from initial presentation to return to duty is discussed and guidance given on occupational considerations.

The article demonstrates the mass media receiver, who interacts with media and after reading, listening or watching the content online reacts by web publishing. The article presents examples of such reactions in the form of texts, obtained as a result of expe-rimental research (hidden ethnographic participant observation, survey auto-ethnography, in-depth, standardized/structured individual interview), which subjects them to qualitative research. This rese-arch consists in the analysis of the content and its form by using methods dedicated to examine lingu-istic pragmatics and interactionism.Therefore, it is assumed that the individual receiver participates in the media interaction, which I understand as the mutually indirect interaction of the sender and the receiver in media communica-tion process. The receiver’s reaction in this process may be, among others, online publishing, which is named as “surfer commentary”.

Despite the highly competitive situation within the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) market and the resulting pressure and uncertainty for the involved providers, only little knowledge is available about business model characteristics (BMCs) related to success. Merely few qualitative studies are existing that propose hypotheses on success-driving business model characteristics (SDBMCs), however, a general and comparative quantitative evaluation and thus an evidence for their impact on business success is still missing. But this knowledge is essential for IaaS providers as it would allow them to focus their limited resources and efforts on the truly decisive BMCs and, at the same time, save costs by avoiding activities and investments of minor importance. Aiming to reduce this gap, a web-based survey was carried out, in which representatives of IaaS providers of different size rated the level of relevance of the proposed SDBMCs. As this study is still going on, this paper focuses on presenting the study design and an analysis of the data collected so far. As a preliminary result, nearly 80 % of the SDBMCs were rated as extremely important or important, meaning that the existing qualitative research results were confirmed to a high degree. The relevance of the individual SDBMCs varies greatly depending on the IaaS provider’s size

Este estudo teve como propósito discutir alguns resultados da pesquisa intitulada “Problemas práticos profissionais: aportes teórico-metodológicos do ensino de geografia na formação continuada de professores dos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental”. Nesse sentido, o objetivo geral consistiu em compreender se a formação continuada, centrada nos problemas práticos profissionais, contribui para que as professoras superem o ensino empírico dos conteúdos geográficos. Em consonância, os objetivos específicos visaram: discutir os principais conceitos da teoria histórico-cultural e do Ensino de Geografia; mediar a elaboração dos planos de aula; e entender a formação continuada como possibilidade de superação do ensino empírico dos conteúdos geográficos. A pesquisa qualitativa e os procedimentos de análise dos planos de aula, de observação e de narrativas foram utilizados para levantamento dos dados junto às professoras durante o curso de formação continuada, que contou com os conteúdos de paisagem, lugar, urbano e cidade. Como resultado, mesmo diante da complexidade do tema, houve mudanças nas práticas pedagógicas das professoras, entre as quais se destacaram: o avanço na apropriação desses conceitos, na contextualização dos conteúdos, na articulação destes com os conhecimentos cotidianos dos alunos, na organização de textos e imagens e nas tarefas dos alunos do coletivo para o individual. Therefore, the general objective was to understand if continued training, focused on practical professional problems, contributes to teachers surmount empirical teaching of geographic contents. In harmony, the specific objectives aimed to: discuss the main concepts of historical-cultural theory and geography teaching; mediate the preparation of lesson plans; and to understand continued training as a possibility of surpassing the empirical teaching of geographic contents. Qualitative research and procedures for analyzing lesson plans, observation and narratives were used to survey data with teachers during the continuing education course, which included the contents of landscape, place, urban and city. As results, even before the complexity of the theme, there were changes in the pedagogical practices of the teachers, among which stood out: the advance in the appropriation of these concepts, in the contextualization of the contents, in the articulation of these with the knowledge students' daily lives, in the organization of texts and images, and in the tasks of the students from the collective to the individual. Abstract Retirement is an ever-evolving, dynamic, and complex social construct we associate with the end of one’s career. Exploring what retirement means to different people can contribute to a better understanding of the implications of this important transition at the individual and societal level. However, sifting through participants stories is not always a straightforward endeavor, particularly in the case when participants have something to hide. This paper examines the value of qualitative research methods in unpacking complex personal narratives. As the landscape surrounding mature workers’ experiences continues to change, this paper extends policy debates about retirement, as well as scholarly conversations about the richness and complexity of qualitative research.
