High-fidelity imaging methods such as laser scanning and digital photogrammetry have captured public and professional audiences in a flurry of optimistic discourse about their capacities as forms of preservation and of archaeological recording and interpretation. With technical finesse and mastery, endangered heritage can, it is argued, be captured, re-materialized, and recovered from the forces that threaten it. As the plot concerning our ‘digital futures’ thickens, we discuss here an experimental project that offers an oblique approach to the practice of 3D visualization, one that subverts the dominance of neutral, technical field engagements. We examine digital materiality by exploring digital heritage objects as both method and site of ethnographic encounter. Orbiting the ruins of Asinou, an abandoned village in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus, with our ‘low-tech’ equipment, we sought to observe the conditions of the ‘in-between’ of two makeshift forms, each as ‘real’ as the other. We focus our thinking on the tensions of translation that play on the surface of our technically crude digital assemblages, as spaces of generative potential for speculations about encounters with emerging digital materialities, their affective capacities and status as future heritage objects.

Abstract The occurrence of caries lesions adjacent to restorations is a serious problem in Dentistry. Therefore, new antimicrobial restorative materials could help to prevent recurrent carious lesions. This study evaluated the effect of a new glass ionomer cement (Ion Z) on the viability of a microcosm biofilm and on the development of enamel demineralization. Enamel samples were filled with the following materials (n=9): A) Ion-Z (FGM Ltda); B) Maxxion R (FGM Ltda); C) Ketac Fil Plus (3M ESPE) and D) no restoration (control). The samples were then exposed to human saliva mixed with McBain saliva (1:50) containing 0.2% sucrose for 14 days. The live and dead bacteria were quantified by fluorescence using a confocal laser-scanning microscope. The enamel demineralization was analyzed using transverse microradiography (TMR). The data were submitted to ANOVA/Tukey or Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn test (p<0.05). Ion Z induced a higher percentage of dead bacteria (60.96±12.0%) compared to the other groups (Maxxion R: 39.8±6.7%, Ketac Fil Plus: 43.7±9.71% and control 46.3±9.5%). All materials significantly reduced the average mineral loss compared to control (Ion-Z 25.0±4.2%vol, Maxxion R 23.4±8.0%vol, Ketac Fil Plus 30.7±7.7 and control 41.2±6.6%vol). Ion-Z was the only material able to significantly improve the mineral content at the surface layer (Zmax: 63.5±18.2%vol) compared to control (38.9±11.3%vol). Ion-Z shows antimicrobial potential, but its anti-caries effect was similar to the other materials, under this model.

The issues related to the introduction of innovative methods, technologies and technological means in the investigation of crimes are considered. It is noted that one of the main directions of the development of Criminalistics is the assimilation of the virtual reality associated with computerization of spheres of life, implementation of modern technologies and their use in law enforcement. Technology use of laser scanning of terrain and objects resulting in 3D model is produced allows several times to increase informative value of data collected at the incident scene, provides a visual and convenient visualization in three-dimensional form. As against photo and video images, 3D model has a stereoscopic image and the ability to freely change the angle while viewing. Besides to scanning results can be stored on any digital media without the possibility of changes or adjustments. Attention is focused on the technological capabilities of 3D-visualization systems on examples of their use in foreign countries as technological means of capturing the situation of the scene and the subsequent of a crime reconstruction. Thus, using a portable three-dimensional imaging system for working with volumetric traces at a crime scene, it is possible to obtain accurate three-dimensional images of traces of protectors or footprints (shoes) on soil and snow. This system is an alternative to traditional methods of fixing evidence: photofixing and making plaster casts. Unlike other systems, new approach does not require the use of lasers. The expediency of expanding the range of 3D laser scanning system use in modern investigative and judicial practice of our state with the aim of increasing the level of provision of pre-trial investigation authorities with technological means and bringing it closer to European standards is argued.

Today there are many publications or papers related with several graphic surveys of architectural heritage carried out using a variety of both traditional and cutting edge methods. Yet, the implementation of new graphical documentation systems, such as Automated Digital Photogrammetry, has introduced a fresh approach to dealing with architectural surveys by making them more accessible to the general public and, to a certain extent, increasing their usability (Garfella, Máñez, Cabeza, & Soler, 2014). The present study aims, on the one hand, to offer an overview of architectural survey systems and, on the other hand, to evaluate the differences in the degree of precision or accuracy between the latest state-of-the-art methods and the already well-established ones. This will enable us to examine the results obtained in this experiment to look for concordances and discrepancies between them that can be helpful when using such systems to deal with tasks in the future.

Purpose. The study was aimed at comparing the long-term effects of different antiglaucoma eye drops on conjunctival structures using laser scanning confocal microscopy.Methods. Eighty patients diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma and twenty healthy volunteers were included in this study. The participants were divided into 5 groups according to the different medications. The lachrymal film break-up time, Schirmer’s I test, and Ocular Surface Disease Index Questionnaire were performed in all subjects. The confocal microscopy was used to observe the basal epithelial cell density (ECD), goblet cell density (GCD), dendritic cell density (DCD), and subepithelial collagen fiber diameter (SFD).Results. Statistically significant differences were found among the control group and the antiglaucoma therapy groups in the values of three clinical data (P<0.05). The GCD, DCD, and SFD showed significant differences in all glaucoma groups when compared to the control (P<0.001). Moreover, the prostaglandin group differed from the other antiglaucoma therapy groups in the GCD and SFD (P<0.05).Conclusions. Our study confirmed the significant differences in the conjunctival structures based on the effects of antiglaucoma medications. Less pronounced changes were found in the patients treated with prostaglandin analogue than in the other kinds of antiglaucoma therapies.

AbstractThe representation of microcirculation can be approached in several ways. One of the possibilities is to represent the endothelium (endothelial or sinus lining cells) and their basement membrane on the basis of detecting the known components and the expression of the surface antigenes by the methods of immuno-, enzyme- or lectino-histochemical analysis, or by staining or impregnation histological methods. The other possibility is the examination of samples by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. For three-dimensional demonstration corrosion casts techniques or laser scanning confocal microscopy can be used. In this paper we describe the survey of immuno-, enzyme- and lectino-histochemical characteristics of selected components of microcirculation and our own results of its demonstration in human spleen.

It has long been recognized that games are useful in engineering education, and more recently they have also become a common setting for empirical research. Games are useful for both teaching and research because they mimic aspects of reality and require participants to reason within that realistic context, and they allow researchers to study phenomena empirically that are hard to observe in reality. This paper explores what can be learned by students and by researchers, based on the authors’ experience with two sets of games. These games vary in both the experience level of the participants and the “fidelity” or realism of the game itself. Our experience suggests that what can be learned by participants and by researchers depends on both these dimensions. For teaching purposes, inexperienced participants may struggle to connect lessons from medium-fidelity games to the real world. On the other hand, experienced participants may learn more from medium-fidelity games that provide the time and support to practice and reflect on new skills. For research purposes, high-fidelity games are best due to their higher ecological validity, even with inexperienced participants, although experienced participants may enable strong validity in medium-fidelity settings. These findings are based on experience with two games, but provide promising directions for future research.

This chapter covers dactylitis, or ‘sausage-shaped’ digits. As the types of dactylitis depends on the tissues involved and the type of involvement, ‘false’ dactylitis is discussed, and the manifestation of diffuse swelling in spondyloarthritis (SpA) is differentiated from the other forms. Clinical aspects and imaging methods are described, followed by clinimetric assessment and the development of composite scores such as CPDAI and PASDAS. Finally, therapies are described.

In this paper, a high fidelity scheme of quantum teleportation based on quantum neural network (QNN) is proposed. The QNN is composed of multi-bit control-not gates. The quantum teleportation of a qubit state via two-qubit entangled channels is investigated by solving the master equation in Lindblad operators with a noisy environment. To ensure the security of quantum teleportation, the indirect training of QNN is employed. Only 10% of teleported information is extracted for the training of QNN parameters. Then the outputs are corrected by the other QNN at Bob's side. We build a random series of numbers ranged in [0, π] as inputs and simulate the properties of our teleportation scheme. The results show that the fidelity of quantum teleportation system is significantly improved to approach 1 by the error-correction of QNN. It illustrates that the distortion can be eliminated perfectly and the high fidelity of quantum teleportation could be implemented.
