The gestures of presidential candidates can have an important contribution to the shaping of their mediatized image, together with the other components of nonverbal communication as well as together with words. Even more, gestures can have an impact on the evaluation made by a part of the electorate concerning the candidates. Starting from the functions of gestures in which the raised index finger is involved, as established by Geneviève Calbris (1979), we will endeavour to conduct a comparative analysis of the co-verbal gestures made by the two candidates to the presidency of France, Ségolène Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy, during their debate on May 2 2007. The identification of these functions does not include the gestures made with the index finger in combination with other facial components, as well as the gestures where the index finger describes lines drawn in space. The article uses as a research method the contents analysis of these gestures and is based on a scheme of categories that comprises the following indicators: designation/localization, important declaration, (drawing) attention to oneself, uniqueness, reference, refusal/negation, opposition/objection, threat/warning, or accusation.

This paper explores self-plagiarism in three different articles that reported results of the same research project on reading in a foreign language. This article follows the qualitative research method and an exploratory case study was used. Results support that both inadequate paraphrasing and adequate paraphrasing were given. Regarding inadequate paraphrasing some similar words and ideas were found. On the other hand, using different authors in a specific idea, having different numbers of words in a common issue, and being versatile to present information might lead to adequate paraphrasing. Conclusions suggest that a dialog between editors and authors must be given in order to clear self-plagiarism up. Finally, conclusions also suggest that editors should consider the inclusion of some similar information in articles written by the same author or the same research members

Object recognition represents the ability of a system to identify objects, humans or animals in images. Within this domain, this work presents a comparative analysis among different classification methods aiming at Tactode tile recognition. The covered methods include: (i) machine learning with HOG and SVM; (ii) deep learning with CNNs such as VGG16, VGG19, ResNet152, MobileNetV2, SSD and YOLOv4; (iii) matching of handcrafted features with SIFT, SURF, BRISK and ORB; and (iv) template matching. A dataset was created to train learning-based methods (i and ii), and with respect to the other methods (iii and iv), a template dataset was used. To evaluate the performance of the recognition methods, two test datasets were built: tactode_small and tactode_big, which consisted of 288 and 12,000 images, holding 2784 and 96,000 regions of interest for classification, respectively. SSD and YOLOv4 were the worst methods for their domain, whereas ResNet152 and MobileNetV2 showed that they were strong recognition methods. SURF, ORB and BRISK demonstrated great recognition performance, while SIFT was the worst of this type of method. The methods based on template matching attained reasonable recognition results, falling behind most other methods. The top three methods of this study were: VGG16 with an accuracy of 99.96% and 99.95% for tactode_small and tactode_big, respectively; VGG19 with an accuracy of 99.96% and 99.68% for the same datasets; and HOG and SVM, which reached an accuracy of 99.93% for tactode_small and 99.86% for tactode_big, while at the same time presenting average execution times of 0.323 s and 0.232 s on the respective datasets, being the fastest method overall. This work demonstrated that VGG16 was the best choice for this case study, since it minimised the misclassifications for both test datasets.

Poor waste management facilities  from Romanian rural areas lead to uncontrolled waste disposal on improper sites. These bad practices are frequently   in the the proximity of built-up areas , therefore, the  small rivers inside these areas are susceptible  to waste dumping. The paper aims to develop  a quantitative  assessment  method  of waste disposed into  such small rivers from extra-Carpathian region of Neamț county. The lack of organized waste collection services from 2003 lead to high values of waste disposed in such rivers frequently over 15  t/yr  for each one. Despite some improvements compared to 2003 the small rivers inside  built-up areas of villages are still highly exposed to waste dumping. The values vary depending on demographic and geographic features of each locality and on the other side, due to the presence of an organized waste collection system. The results and  comparative analysis between 2003 and 2010 show some positive changes but the illegal dumping issue is far from being eliminated.

The automotive industry’s supply chain has been extensively researched but has tended to focus on the component production sections of the chain. Indeed, the automotive industry needs a structured model that encompasses the entire fragmented, uncertain and complicated industry. For this reason, the SCOR® model was chosen in this study because it contains well-defined and standardized processes and metrics for performance measurement and comparative analysis of the entire supply chain and not only internal processes. In this context, the objective of this paper is to concretize the application of the SCOR® model in an automotive company by following the steps and guidelines described by the supply chain council that designed this model. Then, several contributions and benefits of the application of this model in the automotive sector will be raised based on this case study and especially on the interviews conducted with the various practitioners and specialists in the supply chain. On the other hand, a list of limitations and difficulties encountered during and after the implementation of this standard will also be collected. Although this study is primarily oriented towards a university audience, it can also be interesting and useful for practitioners, who will be able to gain an understanding of the purpose of the existing research and to have access to a real-life example of the application of this model in the automotive sector.
