One of the problems in translation is idiom. Idiomatic expressions are unique because their structures cannot always be translated literally and even tend to form new meanings. This research aims to analyze the strategy of English idioms translation in Rhonda Byrne’s book The Magic which was translated into Indonesian entitled The Magic by Susi Purwoko and to find out the most dominant strategy used by translator. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data are English idioms and their translation in Indonesian. There are 48 data. Those are analyzed based on Baker’s Idiom translation strategies. They are (1) using an idiom of similar meaning and form, (2) using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar, (3) Translation by paraphrase. The result shows that there are three strategies of English idioms translation in Rhonda Byrne's book The Magic. They are (1) using an idiom of similar meaning and form (15 %), (2) using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar (31 %), (3) Translation by paraphrase (54); and the most dominant strategy is a translation by paraphrase.

The translation of cultural words needs some consideration and recognition of the cultural achievements referred to in the Source Language (SL) text, and respect for all foreign countries and their cultures. Therefore, translating cultural words is quite difficult, because their structures cannot always be translated literally and, even tend to form new meanings. The aims of this research are to describe the cultural words and analyze the translation strategies used in Mary Higgins Clark’s novel The Anastasia Syndrome and Other Stories, already translated into Indonesian entitled Sindrom Anastasia dan Kisah-kisah lainnya by Ade Dina Sigarlaki. This research is a qualitative descriptive study.  The data are the cultural words in English (SL) and their translation in Indonesian (TL). Those are analyzed based on Newmark’s cultural categories and Baker’s translation strategies. The results show that there are 74 cultural words and four translation strategies in Mary Higgins Clark’s novel The Anastatia Syndrome and other stories: 1) Translation by a more general word (superordinate), 2) Translation by a more neutral/less expressive word, 3) Translation by cultural substitution, 4) Translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation.

Abstract This article discusses about the types of idiomatic expression and the translation accuracy of English idiomatic expression into Indonesian in “Big Hero 6” film subtitle translated by Lebah Ganteng by using qualitative descriptive method. The writer analyses the data by classifying the type of idiomatic expressions based on McCarthy and O’Dell’s theory about the types of idiom, giving explication toward the translation strategy of idiomatic expression that is done by the translator based on Mona Baker’s theory about translation strategy of idiom, and analyzing the translation accuracy of English idiomatic expression translation into Indonesian considering the appropriate of the context of film and related theory about accuracy-rating assessment by Nababan. As the result, the types of idiomatic expression applied in that film are compound, verb +object, prepositional phrase, and whole clause and sentence. The translator seems prefer to use omission of entire idiom, paraphrasing, and using idiom of similar meaning and form strategy in translating idiom expression. ---Abstrak Tulisan ini membahas tentang jenis-jenis ungkapan idiom dan keakurasian terjemahan subtitle idiom dari bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dalam film “Big Hero 6” yang diterjemahkan oleh tim Lebah Ganteng dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif. Penulis mengklasifikasi jenis ungkapan idiom berdasrkan teori   McCarthy dan O’Dell, mengenai jenis-jenis idiom, dengan memberikan eksplikasi terhadap strategi penerjemahan yang dilakukan berdasarkan teorinya Mona Baker, Strategi Penerjemahan Idiom. Di samping itu penulis juga menganalisis keakurasian penerjemahan ungkapan idiom dari bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dengan menggunakan konsep Penilaian Penerjemahan yang diajukan oleh Nababan. Hasil dari pembahasan tentang penerjemahan idiom yang ada dalam film tersebut, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa penerjemah tampaknya lebih sering menggunakan penghilangan idiom, memparafrasa, dan menggunakan kesamaan idiom antara bahasa sumber dan bahasa sasaran. In this global era, due to the growth of science, information, technology, and other people needs, translation becomes necessary in rendering information between languages. However, the process of translating is not as simple as switching the meaning of word for word based on the literal context.Idioms are one of the most problematical components of language. Idioms cannot be easily translated because of their unpredictable meaning and grammar. The purpose of this study is to find out; (1) the idiomatic expressions which are found in Indonesian Legends, (2) the meaning of the idiomatic expressions found in Indonesian Legends, and (3) the various strategies which are used in translating idioms in Indonesia into English found in Indonesian Legends.The descriptive qualitative research design, in the form of document analysis, was employed in this study. The instruments to collect the data were documents and expert opinion. Moreover, the documents consisted of the Bahasa Indonesia (Source Text) and English (Target Text) translation versions of five Indonesian Legends, namely; Batu Kuwung, Batu Menangis, Gunung Merapi, Tangkuban Perahu and Candi Prambanan. This study revealed that idiomatic expression translation strategy by paraphrasingwas the most dominant strategy used by the translator in translating the idiomatic expressions found in five Indonesian Legends (eleven out of eighteen cases). Meanwhile, the second most common strategy was translating by omission (six out of eighteen cases).  The last was the strategy of using an idiom of similar meaning and form which only one out of eighteen cases. Thus, it can be concluded that the translator only applied three strategies out of the main five strategies of translating idiomatic expression suggested by Baker.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk 1) mendeskripsikan tingkat kesulitan penerjemahan idiom dan faktor kebahasaan yang mempengaruhinya dan 2) mendeskripsikan strategi penerjemahan idiom dan tingkat pencapaian terjemahannya. Penelitian ini merupakan sebuah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan didukung data-data kuantitatif. Penyediaan data dalam penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode kuesioner, tes tertulis, wawancara, pengamatan, dan dokumentasi. Lembar kuesioner yang dikumpulkan digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi strategi yang digunakan responden, sedangkan data hasil tes tertulisnya diklasifikasi dan diukur tingkat pencapaiannya dengan menggunakan skala Larson. Data penelitian ini disajikan dengan metode formal dan informal. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa 1) ditinjau dari tingkat kesulitannya, idiom dapat dibagi menjadi idiom dengan tingkat kesulitan tinggi, sedang, dan rendah yang dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor kebahasaan, yaitu tipe idiom, kesamaan asosiasi, konteks yang melingkupi idiom, dan adanya petunjuk dalam konteks tersebut, 2) teknik penerjemahan memperhatikan konteks merupakan strategi penerjemahan dengan hasil paling baik.This study aims to 1) describe the difficulty level of translating idioms and the linguistic factors that influence them and 2) describe the translation strategies of idioms and the level of achievement of the translation results. This research is a qualitative descriptive study supported by quantitative data. Provision of data in this study was carried out by questionnaire method, written test, interview, observation, and documentation. The collected questionnaire sheets were used to identify the strategies used by the respondents, while the written test results were classified and the level of achievement was measured using the Larson scale. This research data are presented with formal and informal methods. The results of data analysis show that 1) in terms of the level of difficulty, idioms can be divided into high, middle, and low difficulty level idioms that are influenced by several linguistic factors, namely the type of idiom, similarity of associations, the context surrounding the idiom, and the existence of clues in the contexts, 2) the translation technique by paying attention to the context is one of the best translation strategy so far.

Idiomatic expressions are expressions with a figurative meaning different from their literal meaning, and therefore, they cannot be understood literally. This study aims to scrutinize some aspects of the translation of idiomatic expressions in a mystery movie entitled ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. Seventy-seven idiomatic expressions were found in the movie. The idioms can be categorized as follows: keywords with idiomatic uses (16) idioms with nouns and adjectives (2), idiomatic pairs (1), idioms with prepositions (7), phrasal verbs idioms (26), verbal idioms (5), idioms from special subjects (1), idioms with key words from special categories (16), and idioms with comparison (3). Phrasal verbs idiom was the most frequently occurred because idioms are mostly organized by verb comprising the combination of verb and preposition or verb and adverb. Further, the rendering of the idioms from English as the Source Language (SL) into Indonesian as the Target Language (TL) employed some strategies; translation by paraphrase was the highly frequent translation strategy. The strategy of using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form was also located in the high-frequency position of the continuum. Furthermore, using an idiom of similar form and meaning and translation by omission were the translation strategies of low frequency. Translation by paraphrase was frequently used because the translator wanted to convey the meaning as clearly as possible while also considering the cultural difference between SL and TL. To sum up, the idiomatic expression dominantly used in the movie was phrasal verbs (34%), while the strategy that was mostly applied in translating them was translation by paraphrase (56%).

This article focuses on translation strategy of idiom in comic Garfield Goes to and its translation. It is expected to identify translation strategies and to know the pattern of translation strategies in translating the idiomatic expression. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative. The source of data is a comic entitled Garfield Goes to Waist and its translation Garfield Mengurangi Berat. Whereas, the data are all of idioms found in the comic. This research applies total sampling technique since the samples are all of data which are found in the source of data. The result of the analysis shows that there are four strategies used by the translator in translating idioms. Meanwhile, the pattern of strategies indicates that Translation by Paraphrasing is dominant strategy. Besides, the others strategies are translation Using an Idiom of Similar Meaning but Dissimilar Form, Translation by Omission and Using an Idiom of Similar Meaning and Form respectively

<p>This research describes the translation strategy of idiomatic expression used by translator and the quality of translation of idiomatic expression in the short story by Roald Dahl entitled “Man from the South”. This research uses descriptive qualitative method and uses content analysis as the data collection technique. To check the validity of this research, the researcher uses triangulation such as, data triangulation, investigator triangulation, theory triangulation, and methodological triangulation. The results of this research shows that several translation strategies are applied, which include idioms of similar meaning and form, translation by paraphrase, and translation by omission. In this research, paraphrase strategy is in the most applied strategy87.88% of the data (58 idiomatic expressions) use translation by paraphrase. This research also shows that the quality of translation of idiomatic expression translation which consists of accuracy, naturalness, and clarity is categorized as good translation. It can be seen from the results that 75% of the data are accurate, 78, 79% of the data are natural, and78, 79% of the data are clear. </p>

The article deals with the translation strategies used in Toba Dream Movie. The objectives of this study were to find out types and most dominant type of translation strategies used in the subtitles of Toba Dream movie. The study was conducting by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were words, phrases, and clauses in the subtitle of  Toba  Dream movie, there  were 425 dialogues in the movie. The data analysis were taken by listing and tabulating the data. The data were analyzed based on the theory that proposed by Henrik Gottlieb. The findings inducted that there  were ten types of translation strategies used in the movie, they were there were (319 times)used transfer strategy,  (37 times) used paraphrase, (27 times) used dislocation, (20 times)used resignation, (10times) used expansion, (5 times)used decimation, (4 times) utterances which used condesation, (1time) used imitation, (1time) used transcription and (1time) used deletion. The dominant strategy used in the subtitles of Toba Dream movie was transfer strategy where the translator  translated the dialogues completely and correctly.
