The translation of cultural words needs some consideration and recognition of the cultural achievements referred to in the Source Language (SL) text, and respect for all foreign countries and their cultures. Therefore, translating cultural words is quite difficult, because their structures cannot always be translated literally and, even tend to form new meanings. The aims of this research are to describe the cultural words and analyze the translation strategies used in Mary Higgins Clark’s novel The Anastasia Syndrome and Other Stories, already translated into Indonesian entitled Sindrom Anastasia dan Kisah-kisah lainnya by Ade Dina Sigarlaki. This research is a qualitative descriptive study.  The data are the cultural words in English (SL) and their translation in Indonesian (TL). Those are analyzed based on Newmark’s cultural categories and Baker’s translation strategies. The results show that there are 74 cultural words and four translation strategies in Mary Higgins Clark’s novel The Anastatia Syndrome and other stories: 1) Translation by a more general word (superordinate), 2) Translation by a more neutral/less expressive word, 3) Translation by cultural substitution, 4) Translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation.

One of the problems in translation is idiom. Idiomatic expressions are unique because their structures cannot always be translated literally and even tend to form new meanings. This research aims to analyze the strategy of English idioms translation in Rhonda Byrne’s book The Magic which was translated into Indonesian entitled The Magic by Susi Purwoko and to find out the most dominant strategy used by translator. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data are English idioms and their translation in Indonesian. There are 48 data. Those are analyzed based on Baker’s Idiom translation strategies. They are (1) using an idiom of similar meaning and form, (2) using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar, (3) Translation by paraphrase. The result shows that there are three strategies of English idioms translation in Rhonda Byrne's book The Magic. They are (1) using an idiom of similar meaning and form (15 %), (2) using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar (31 %), (3) Translation by paraphrase (54); and the most dominant strategy is a translation by paraphrase.

Discourse includes both structural and conceptual patterns.  Most of these patterns are different in various languages.  A conceptual pattern in source language can be realized in different ways in a target language.  Therefore, the translator should be aware of this kind of differences between SL and TL conceptual patterns, because rendering these patterns from the source text into the target one can be problematic and their inaccurate transfer may lead to a flawed translation.  This descriptive study aimed to investigate the conceptual discourse patterns and related ideologies in a novel entitled Animal Farm and as the same realizing the conceptual patterns in its translation into Azeri-Turkish.  Accordingly, the researchers selected and analyzed the samples based on Fairclough’s approach (2001) to CDA.  The findings indicated that the translators’ ideological and socio-cultural norms affect their translation strategies and lexical and grammatical choices and this in turn influences their success to recognize and transmit the ST implicit ideologies into TT. Keywords:  Conceptual Discourse Patterns, English, Azeri-Turkish

The function of translation is to convey meaning or message from source language text into target language text. However, in translating, the translator will face some problems, for example is the translation of repetitive Indonesian adjectives. This study investigates how repetitive Indonesian adjectives are translated into English. Indonesian has repetitive adjectives such as tinggi-tinggi, cantik-cantik, and jauh-jauh and the English translation of the repetition is not tall-tall, beautiful-beautiful, and far-far respectively. The method applied in this study is qualitative descriptive method. The data will be categorized and classified and then analyzed in accordance with the principle, translation strategies, and relevant theories. The result of the study shows that literal translation strategy and transposition strategy are the most frequent strategy used by the translator. Some of them are translated in the different form grammatically but the meaning of the message in source language is well maintained into the target language. The principle of translation employed by the translator to translate Indonesian repetitive adjective is meaning.

Discourse includes both structural and conceptual patterns.  Most of these patterns are different in various languages.  A conceptual pattern in source language can be realized in different ways in target language.  Therefore, the translator should be aware of differences between SL and TL conceptual patterns because rendering these patterns from the source text into the target one can be problematic.  The present descriptive study aimed to investigate the conceptual discourse patterns and related ideologies in George Orwell’s Animal Farm and its Persian translations.  Accordingly, the researchers selected and analyzed the samples based on Fairclough’s (2001) approach to CDA.  Based on the findings, Gheybi (2010) has been more successful in rendering the conceptual discourse patterns and ideologies, because her translation was much more similar to the source text in terms of conceptual discourse patterns as compared to the translation by Hoseyni and Nabizadeh (2003).  The findings indicated that the translators’ ideological and socio-cultural norms affect their translation strategies and lexical and grammatical choices and this in turn influences their success to recognize and transmit the ST implicit ideologies into TT.
