Hedging is a communicative strategy and a form of pragmatic competence which plays a central role in delivering the intended message of the speaker. Commonly observed in two-way conversations, hedges as hedging devices are also present in monologues. This study investigates the most common hedges used in popular monologues TED Talks as well as observes the various communicative strategies they denote. 130 transcripts of the talks, taped from 2002-2019 taken from the official website of TED (ted.com), are collected to build a corpus of 337,302 tokens. Through corpus-based analysis using concordance software AntConc 3.5.0, 48 most common hedges are inserted for frequency search. The search hits show that the most frequently-used hedges in the corpus are ‘just,’ ‘could,’ ‘you know,’ ‘actually,’ ‘I think,’ and ‘kind of’ with the numbers of occurrence 1107, 554, 541, 530, 390, and 309 respectively. From the analyses of the functions of the most frequent hedges, it can be concluded that each of the hedges serves distinctive pragmatic strategy which contributes in the communicative processes of the talks.

Dmitry Dontsov’s communicative strategy is explored in the article, taking into account the national and philosophical ideas inherent to his thinking. Grounding on the material of the literary-critical essays of the publicist, it turns out that Dontsov’s communicative strategy according to the content is ethosophysical and holistic. It’s a national-existential phenomenon in the history of Ukrainian literary studies of the twentieth century. The communicative processes reflected in the essays «Crisis of our literature», «Our literary ghetto» are formed in a single communicative paradigm and include: the event, communicative situation, intonational tone, axiological author’s commentary and a special national-centric and hermeneutical way of representation of the situation.

The nationalist interpretation of the thinker is essentially national-philosophical (national), but at the same time it is literary with typical for this kind of experience, with the predominance of coherently-semantic level of cognition and evaluation over the formal-aesthetic. As a result of cognition happends the transcoding of an idea from the language of art into the language of philosophy in the search of the national-philosophical equivalent of a literary phenomenon. In most cases, this is based on two intentions: the search for protection and assertion of one’s own national identity, and the cultural and political realization of the national idea. At the same time, the aesthetic level of a literary phenomenon is evaluated.

The following characteristics of the literary-critical text are highlighted and substantiated: the text as a receptive expression that can be interpreted freely, conceptually transforms information, constructing new meanings through interesting dialogical models, rhetorical questions, pre-planned line of speech behavior, public speaking behavior, which is necessarily intended to avoid any one-sided narrative or ambiguity of perception, openness and comprehension.

Key words: communicative strategy, text, literary-critical discourse, communicative processes, national philosophy, hermeneutics.

AbstractThe present paper contributes to the study of speech act pragmatics, language contact, bilingualism, and heritage languages by bringing attention to the pragmatics of a contact language, heritage Russian (HR). The current study has a descriptive orientation, its main goal being to create a baseline for the pragmatic competence of speakers with incomplete acquisition of L1, which characterizes language contact in immigrant populations. We focus on communicative strategies and the choice of linguistic forms in requests made by heritage speakers of Russian, native speakers of full Russian, and native speakers of American English. The specific research questions explored in this study are: Is the linguistic variable – the form of polite requests – correlated with the population (speakers of HR vs. speakers of full Russian)? How do the differences play out? Do HR speakers have their own communicative norms? If yes, did these new norms develop under the influence of English or as a result of language-internal restructuring? We report that HR exhibits evidence of developing its own conventions for expressing polite requests which differ from the corresponding conventions in full Russian. Specifically, HR speakers use significantly more impersonal modals than monolingual native speakers of Russian in informal scenarios and rely on increased syntactic complexity to mark polite requests in formal scenarios. In indirect requests produced in both types of scenarios, HR speakers overuse the downgrader

There are multiple communicative strategies in architecture depending on the target audience. The mechanisms of representation may radically vary when the recipient is the client, the constructor, the curator, a colleague or even an instructor (1). As an example, the approach may be mainly visual when the target is the client. However, it may be strictly structural to start a conversation with a peer ad mostly conceptual when pointing to the jury members in a competition. In certain cases, the adaptation of the graphic language to the different scenarios leads to such a distortion on the message that the original project is hardly recognizable. To illustrate this point, the article will focus on the project of the Public Seattle Library, designed by the architect Rem Koolhaas. The analysis of five different communicative strategies of the project show peculiar and unequal graphic narrations: from the concept book of the competition, the website of LMN (the American partners of Rem Koolhaas- OMA in this particular project), the website of OMA, the coverage on the Seattle press, the Library Brochure for teenagers and the approach developed on the "Content" book. Rem Koolhaas coined the concept of "design of information" to express the fundamental relationship between the message and media in architecture. In his practice, the communicative strategy is present from the beginning of the design process till the final stages. In this article, the thoughtful comparison of these examples will enable to extract conclusions on the use of communication in architectural design and reflect on the iconic and communicative dimension of architecture in general.

The advantages of social media platforms as interactive information sources raise the importance of examining how they are used by political digital opinion leaders to influence public perceptions. Twitter, especially, played a major role in Egypt’s January 25 revolution facilitating news dissemination, public discussions and debates. Analyzing the communicative strategies of two Egyptian political influencers –Ammar Ali Hassan and Ezzedine Fishere– ten years after Egypt’s political change, and the role they play in public discourse through their Twitter accounts, this research offers an overview of the current role played by Egyptian digital political influencers in influencing public opinion. Focusing on the content and discourse of their tweets for two months, October and November 2019, the digital political influencers were selected based on the number of followers divided by the amount of interactivity on their tweets, such as retweets and favorites. The unit of analysis is the tweet that received the largest amount of interactivity. Results showed that both influencers had a unidirectional opinion strategy. While Hassan’s tweets, @ammaralihassan, seemed purposeless, not yielding any clear and valuable content to the reader, Fishere, @FishereEzzedine, was more outspoken and clearer in his communicative strategy, using evidence in defending human rights in Egypt and the Arab World. The analysis indicated more fact-based tweets by Fishere, who seems to play a more significant role in his communication network, despite minimal interaction.

The article is devoted to the study of Leo Tolstoy’s diary of in the aspect of self-identification of his personality. The paper considers diary entries for 1907-1908. It is revealed that the diary was not a form of exclusively autocommunication, since the writer understood that the diary would have its own reader. The diary pays much attention to such aspects as self-esteem, self-identification. Self-identification refers to the process of self-analysis, the result of which is the categorization of one's personality in a coordinate system known to a person. The results of self-identification can be verbalized in various ways. Propositions that reflect these processes have the form I am X. Objectification of identification processes is implemented by different communication strategies, which are understood as a way to achieve the goals of communication. The communicative strategy is determined on the basis of the analysis of the communicative purpose of the utterance, as well as the linguistic means of its implementation. The paper identifies the following communicative strategies and their corresponding identification propositions: setting goals for self-improvement - I am an imperfect person; age identification - I am an old but happy person; self-deprecation - I am an insignificant person; identification with other people - I am the same as everyone else; attitude to God - I am part of God; relations with family members - I am a stranger in my family. Tolstoy's diaries are characterized by analyticism. The study of communicative strategies in the diary of Leo Tolstoy demonstrates their interrelation and determinism. The highlighted strategies reflect Tolstoy's desire for spiritual self-improvement and unity with God.

This paper focuses on the popularization of information related to environmental issues in media texts, with a particular focus on TED Talks. TED talks are a distinctive genre with has considerable social implications, especially when the presentations concern themes such as the environment, the understanding of which is a key determinant in the full realization of specific environmental policies. In this respect, this study suggests a critical need to go beyond the purely technical analysis of environmental issues by framing them within a wider discourse, which is more likely to influence the public at large. The paper explores a corpus of popular talks which deal with environmental issues and analyzes their macro-structural components. Methodologically, traditional genre analysis is integrated with a critical stimulus in order to unveil the strategies employed to overcome the technophilic/technophobic dichotomy which often typifies environmental discourse. The findings show the flexible and dynamic nature of TED Talks. Their communicative success lies specifically in the ability of the presenters to attract the audience’s attention by making use of different communicative strategies and drawing on different forms of expertise, within the specific structural constraints imposed by this genre.
