Objective We examined health-related communication between same-sex and other-sex friends and how communication was related to health-related behavior. Participants Data from 243 emerging adults attending college ( Mage = 18.96, SD = 1.43; 55.6% male) were analyzed. Methods Participants completed measures assessing the frequency in which they talked about and made plans to engage in exercise and nutrition-related behaviors with friends, as well as how often they engaged in exercise and nutrition-related behaviors. Results In general, participants reported more health-related communication with same-sex friends. Health-related communication with same-sex friends was positively related to health behaviors for men and women. However, the pattern of results differed for men and women depending on the topic of communication and the behavior being examined. Conclusion Our study extends the literature by examining the role of sex of friends in health communication and planning and how interactions with friends relate to health-promoting behavior.

This paper aims to reconstruct some of the causes and the context of wife-battering in Montreal between the years 1869-1879. It seeks to determine what the immediate causes were as well as the underlying factors that shaped these conflicts. It also describes how the individuals involved responded, what the role of neighbours was and how this problem was viewed by the society at large. At a broader level, this research seeks to insert one largely ignored aspect of women's lived experience into the historical record while furthering our knowledge of relationships between men and women and working-class family life in general in the mid nineteenth century.

Objectives: Supervision is central to psychiatry training, yet it has been poorly defined and has attracted little research attention. In this study we explore supervisors’ perceptions of their role. This paper is the second of two, with the first exploring trainees’ perceptions of supervisors and supervision. Methods: Using qualitative methods, 21 supervisors were interviewed, and the data subjected to thematic analysis. Results: Participants identified a number of aspects characteristic of the role of supervisor. There was some confusion, however, about the role, and some disparity between supervisors around what can be reasonably expected by a trainee in supervision. Conclusions: Supervisors need a clear definition of their role and responsibilities, and should be monitored and mentored. This is particularly important, given the central role that supervisors are expected to perform at College level.

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), a brilliant English writer, has been called as a feminist, since she fought for women’s rights and protested the domination of men. She might be also called as an androgynist writer, for she sometimes emphasized the harmony of men and women. To the Lighthouse, which was published in 1927, is her best novel of both feminism and androgyny. It is a realistic novel about a family and an elegy for people Virginia loved. Based on the strong and deep memories of her own family, she described a group of the more complex people spending holiday in a summer house on Scottish coast. It consists of Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay with their eight children and assorted guests. They are going to have a visit to a nearby lighthouse. It is put off because of the weather, and takes place ten years later. From this delay of the expedition to the lighthouse, she constructed the complex tensions of family life and the conflict of male and female principles. For Virginia there is not one of kind of truth, but two. There is the truth of reason, and there is the truth of imagination. The truth of reason is pre-eminently the masculine sphere, while the truth of imagination, or intuitive, is the feminine. Together, these truths make up what she calls reality. Regarding this idea, in To the Lighthouse, she tries to imply a theme about the harmony by presenting male and female characters that have contradictory views and different principles. There are many characters in To the Lighthouse, Mr. Ramsay, Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe are supposed to be the main characters since they dominantly support the development of the events and even most of the story focuses on their actions, attitudes and thoughts. This research aims to give evidence that Mr. Ramsay, Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe are all the main characters who, with their words, thoughts and actions, relate each other to support the theme of To the Lighthouse

While collective identifications of diasporic Kurds have attracted considerable scholarly interest, their possible role in familial processes of post-trauma reconstruction has hardly been studied. The aim of this article is therefore to develop an explorative understanding of the deployment and meaning of collective identifications in intimate family contexts by examining the interconnectedness between the transmission of cultural and political belonging and post-trauma meaning-making and coping in Kurdish refugee families. After contextualising diasporic Kurds’ collective identifications through an ethnographic depiction of the Kurdish diasporic community in Belgium, this article reports on findings from a small-scale, exploratory study with five Kurdish refugee families in Belgium. Thematic analysis of family and parent interviews indicates how cultural and political identifications may operate as sources of (1) dealing with cultural bereavement and loss; (2) commemorating trauma; and (3) reversing versus reiterating trauma. Overall, this study’s findings support an explorative understanding of collective identifications as meaningful resources in families’ post-trauma reconstruction.ABSTRACT IN KURMANJIRola nasnameyên komelî di pêvajoyên malbatî yên vesazkirina paş-trawmayê de: Xebateke raveker li ser malbatên kurd ên penaber û civakên wan ên dîasporayêTevî ku nasnameyên komelî yên kurdên dîasporayê ta radeyeke baș bûye mijara lêkolînan, rola wan a muhtemel di pêvajoyên malbatî yên vesazkirina (selihandin) paş-trawmayê qet nehatine vekolîn. The Bahá’í teachings simultaneously assert the equality of men and women while advocating in some cases distinct duties according to gender. Since the Bahá’í Faith also teaches that religious convictions should be examined by the “standards of science,” this ostensible paradox invites careful study. At the heart of the response to this query is the Universal House of Justice statement that “equality between men and women does not, indeed physiologically it cannot, mean identity of functions.” To appreciate and to accept this thesis that there can be gender distinction, even insofar as the assignment of fundamental tasks is concerned, without any attendant diminution in the role of women, we must turn to statements in the Bahá’í writings about the complementary relationship between men and women. Through a careful consideration of this principle, we can discover how there can indeed be gender distinction without inequality in status or function.

In modern liberal democracies, the gendered division of labor is partially the result of men and women making different choices about work and family life, even if such choices stem from social norms about gender. The choices that women make relative to men’s disadvantage them in various ways: such choices lead them to earn less, enjoy less power and prestige in the labor market, be less able to participate in the political sphere on an equal basis, make them to some degree financially dependent on others, and leave them at a bargaining disadvantage and vulnerable in certain personal relationships. This chapter considers if and when the state should intervene to address women’s disadvantage and inequalities that are the result of gender specialization. It is argued that political liberals can and sometimes must intervene in the gendered division of labor when persons’ interests as free and equal citizens are frustrated.
