Kata kunci: Oshin, Face-Threatening Acts, periode Meiji, periode Taisho Abstract: This study is based on a Japanese TV series titled Oshin which was firstly aired in 1983. Oshin, the main character, was born in Japan in 1900 during Meiji period and spent her teenagehood in Taisho period. Previous studies examining Japan mostly do not include Oshin and Face Threatening Acts in the methods/materials used. These are the gaps the current study is fulfilling since this study aims to investigate Oshin’s portrayal of Japan, by using Face Threatening Acts theory, which can reveal Japan’s dark history to people outside Japan. Findings show that face threatening acts in the conversations amongst the characters reflect Japan’s poverty in Meiji period. The face threatening acts also reveal the “underground” political movement emerged in Taisho period as well as laborers’ bad working condition. This study shows how face threatening acts in a conversation can reflect the condition of the place and time when the conversation occurs. This study will also open the society’s eyes on what happened in Japan during Meiji and Taisho periods so that more people can learn from the history. Keywords: Oshin, Face-Threatening Acts, Meiji period, Taisho period

The animated film Bad Hair Day tells the story of a girl who became a victim of bullying because she has a different physical form than her other friends. Bullying is an act of violence, oppression, or intimidation. In this film, Jane who has long, messy hair like a bush becomes a bully victim by her friends, so she feels depressed and sad. The turning point in this film is shown in a moment where the character Jane rediscovers something that has long been lost from her life: friendship. The intangible interconnected friendship that motivates him in the face of abuse carried out by his friends. The storytelling technique chosen is an internal monologue technique. Internal monologue is the technique of delivering stories whose source of sound comes from the thoughts or feelings of the character Jane in the film. Internal monologue technique will help the audience to better understand the feelings experienced by the main character in this film.

Anti-Japanese sentiment in China since the Second World War has been exacerbated by recent territorial disputes involving the Senkaku Islands and the natural resources of the East China Sea. The widespread dissemination of anti-Japanese propaganda by the Chinese media has further contributed to this negative image of Japanese corporations. This pervasive climate of anti-Japanese sentiment has forced Japanese companies seeking to expand their businesses abroad to grapple with the unique challenges of navigating the highly politicized environment of Chinese harmonious society. Still, the success of any foreign companies in China fundamentally depends on whether China’s market economy continues to develop in the face of harsh political conditions and growing social unrest. To date, only a handful of studies have addressed the effects of Chinese harmonious society on the performance of Japanese corporations operating in China. This study is an attempt to fill that gap.

Subject The political and economic outlook for Mongolia. Significance Mongolia is recovering from a largely self-inflicted financial crisis that resulted in an IMF bailout two years ago. Meanwhile, isolationism in the United States and weakened political unity in the EU leave Mongolia with little choice but to slide further towards the neighbouring powers, China and Russia -- an uncomfortable trend for the sole liberal democracy in the region. Mongolia’s return to growth and relative political calm is dampened by external forces including weakness in metals prices and emerging market currencies. Impacts The government will focus on strengthening the economy; the direction of economic policy bodes well for continued growth. Infrastructure needs, such as energy and secure long-term water supplies for the capital, will see significant progress towards resolution. The 'truce' between the two major parties makes political conditions ripe for disruption by a new political movement or politician.

Feminism can be defined as a conscious attempt towards revaluing women’s experience, rethinking the canons of text, revising the recognition of socio cultural, discourse and language, economic and political conditions in the society representing biological differences and their implications. Recent gyro texts express female creativity encompassing various styles, themes, genres and structures. In India, feminism is evolved as an imitation of western feminist movement foregrounding women’s education and independence. The intense awareness of the identity as a woman and theconcerns regarding feminine problems have caused psychological disorders in society. The womenwriters of today have evolved as a socio-political movement rising fundamental queries about social practices, male supremacy, power-structures,culture and social institutions which are instrumental in marginalizing women. Sudha Murthy as a feminist opposes the customs, norms and traditions of a society which tends to place a woman in a position inferior to that of aman, socially, politically, physically and economically.  She has taken up themes of rebellion against the existing social set up through her women characters. Her women are no longer weak, meek and submissive creatures, instead they realize that they have roles to play in a family and in a society like their male counterparts. The women in her novels have preferences, prejudices and raise their voices to be heard. They emphasize their individuality and emerge as new women awakened to face the challenges and lead a meaningful and dignified life, irrespective of the insensiblesocial criticism.

By reconstructing the religious crusade to achieve prohibition in Texas, Making the Bible Belt reveals how southern religious leaders overcame long-standing anticlerical traditions and built a powerful political movement that injected religion irreversibly into public life. H.L. Mencken coined the term “Bible Belt” in the 1920s to capture the peculiar alliance of religion and public life in the American South, but the reality he described was only the closing chapter of a long historical process. Through the politics of prohibition, and in the face of bitter resistance, a complex but shared commitment to expanding the power and scope of religion transformed southern evangelicals’ inward-looking restraints into an aggressive, self-assertive, and unapologetic political activism. Early defeats forced prohibitionist clergy to recast their campaign as a broader effort that churned notions of history, race, gender, and religion into a moral crusade that elevated ambitious leaders such as the pugnacious fundamentalist J. Frank Norris and US senator Morris Sheppard, the “Father of National Prohibition,” into national figures. By exploring the controversies surrounding the religious support of prohibition in Texas, Making the Bible Belt reconstructs the purposeful, decades-long campaign to politicize southern religion, hints at the historical origins of the religious right, and explores a compelling and transformative moment in American history.

This chapter examines efforts of Jews and Muslims in Morocco to reconcile communism with Moroccan nationalism predicated on Islam, centered on the figure of the King as the amir al-mu’minin (Commander of the Faithful) through the long 1960s. The stakes for Jewish and Muslim communists in this setting were high, including the need to demonstrate authenticity and legitimacy of their political movement in the face of accusations of communism as a foreign, colonial, and thus inorganic movement within Morocco. The long 1960s included a major leftist student uprising in 1965, several constitutional crises, and two attempted coups, all of which heightened the existential tension of the Moroccan left within the Islamist monarchy.

Mechanical seal plays a very important role in rotating machinery for space exploration, but it is very difficult to estimate its friction performance by simulative experiment. In this paper, a experimental system for measuring friction properties of mechanical seal materials used in spacecraft is developed. It is able to provide some adjustable parameters in the experiment, such as environment temperature -60°C~60°C, load 100N~300N, rotational speed of 30r/min~110r/min and atmospheric pressure and high vacuum. Friction coefficients of babbitt graphite M120B and hard alloy YG6 are obtained by the test rig and the experimental results testify that the device can conduct simulative experiment effectively.

Abstract Eliette Abécassis’ La répudiée (2000) narrates a rare story of female mystical practice in the face of her impending repudiation from a Hasidic community, which excludes women from intellectual engagement with religious texts. Set in the fictionalised neighbourhood of Meah Shearim in Jerusalem, the novel’s main character, Rachel, faces a divorce under the law of halakhah when she fails to become pregnant after ten years of marriage. Yet, throughout the novel, Rachel asserts her own individualised spiritual practice by locating the ‘divine’ within the love that she shares with her partner, placing her on the path of mysticism. To articulate Rachel’s intuition of the divine within human relationships, I rely on French author Hélène Cixous’ secularised notion of the juifemme: a woman who rewrites sacred texts, conceives of a God detached from dogmatic religion, and locates the divine within the other and the self.
