ABSTRACTAs foreign language, English is not easy to learn by the students. One of the basic skills in English is writing activity. For the students, writing activiy is difficult to try. Naturally, they feel confused on the rule, like: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Some of the students are afraid to expressing their ideas, opinion and argument. This phenomenon makes many students have low scores in writing class. The English teachers state the most of the students complain that they do not understand how to useEnglish correctly. They say that learning English is confusing activity. It is caused by the teaching technique which is applied by them. The English teacher still implements the direct method, which places the teacher as a center of the class, while the students are less active. The teacher also not makes a good interaction with the students in teaching writing process. In teaching english as forein language in indonesia, teachers can use lot of teaching methodology. Those teaching methodology can help the students to learn english especially in writing. One of the methodology is Community Language Learning. Students can express their opinion and argument, when they have some place and time to share their argument to their classmate. Not only that, by using Community Language Learning the students can sharing each other, valuing each other, lowering the defense that prevent interpersonal interaction, reducing anxiety, and constituting a supportive community. After compiling the discussion, can be concluded that, using Community Language Learning in teaching writing for the first semester of Budhi Dharma University proven well. In using this metholodogy, the writing students can be able to write critically, correctly and brave to express their feeling. CLL is valuable method for teaching writing in the first semester. Keywords: Community Language Learning, Critical Thinking, Writing Skill

Writing is still considered as a difficult skill in language learning by Indonesian students. For that reason, it is urgent for teacher to seek for interesting ways to teach writing in the classroom. This study examines the effectiveness of  the use of peer feedback technique to improve students’ skill in writing descriptive paragraph. Some studies have proved the effectiveness of the technique to improve students’ writing skill. The study employs experimental research in which one class of 20 students is  taught to write narrative paragraph and correct their paragraph using peer feedback technique. The result of the study shows that the technique improves the students writing skill in narrative writing, however the scores are not significant. This suggests that there is a factor that affects the result of the teaching using peer feedback, and it is the less time of treatment which is indicated as the factor.

Critical Thinking (CT) in the nurse graduate continues to be a topic of concern in the academic and acute care settings. Few studies focus on early evaluation of Critical Thinking Skills (CTS). The purpose of this chapter is to show how the non-experimental, explanatory, quantitative study, the Kaplan CTIT, was employed to determine if a transformation in the level of CTS occurs within the first semester of associate degree nursing students. Participants completed the pretest in the first three weeks of classes. Posttests were given after course finals. A significant transformation in the level of CT occurred. The estimated change in CT test scores was 2.04, with 95% confidence. Implications for early measurement of CTS in nursing programs reveals if teaching methodology is providing the necessary input for developing CTS or if evaluation and changes are needed.

SAVI is a method used in teaching and learning process which has four main aspects, they are Somatic, it is learning by moving and doing; Auditory, it is learning by talking and hearing; Visual, it is learning by observing and seeing; Intellectual, it is learning by problem solving and reflecting. This article refers to an experimental study on the effectiveness of SAVI to teach writing at one of senior high school in Metro, Lampung. The samples were two classes namely experimental class which was taugh using SAVI and control class which was taught by TSTS. Each class consisted of two groups based on the level of critical thinking (high and low). To gain the data, two instruments were used namely writing test and critical thinking test. The data were, then, analysed by using Multifactor Analysis of Variance ANOVA 2X2 and Tukey test. Before conducting the ANOVA test, pre-requisite test namley normality and homogeneity test were conducted. The findings of this research are: (1) SAVI is more effective than TSTS (2) The students with high critical thinking have better writing skill than those having low critical thinking; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ critical thinking in teaching writing. Therefore, it is recommended for English teachers to implement SAVI in teaching writing activities because this method gives positive contribution in improving the students writing skill and facilitating the students’ critical thinking to produce a good text.

Task-based language teaching has been widely used for language classroom. Using tasks as main activities, task-based materials was developed particularly for writing class. This article is intended to present the study of effectiveness of task-based materials in improving writing class for university. To accommodate the research purposes, mixed method approach was carried out by using quasi experimental research and content analysis of sentence complexity. The respondents were 210 students from writing classes as experiment and control with writing test as instrument. The results of data analysis showed that there were significant differences of writing skill to those who taught using developed task-based materials. Despite the fact that the score did not significantly differ on the aspect of writing mechanics, a developed task-based material has been proved to improve students’ writing skill in the aspect of format, content, organization and grammar. Moreover, the levels of lexical complexity and accuracy from the students whose materials use task-based design are higher than those who do not use it. Then, it can be drawn a conclusion that the use of developed task-based materials brings significant effects toward writing performance.

The development of research abilities is a necessary competency for students of Engineering and Science. Regardless of the engineering field of interest, the development of global competencies influences their professional performance. In the present work, we describe the impact, from the students' perception, of the early approach in research activities that involves critical thinking, innovation, problem-solving, self-direction, leading, and written communication abilities. To introduce the students to Research-Based Learning (RBL), we asked them to develop a solution to a problem presented in a first-semester science class in a university focused on developing technical and transversal competencies. This work proposes a teaching methodology based on RBL, which includes the appropriate use of search tools, data analysis, and writing skills, taking advantage of the institution's resources. Simultaneously, we looked for an effective research methodology to build a solid theoretical framework relevant to their experimental results. Moreover, we aimed to link the theoretical course contents to the student's engineering field through RBL activities. The sample under study had 98 students taking an experimental physics and statistical analysis course; 49 in an experimental group (class) were guided using RBL, and the other students were in the control group. The evaluation of the learning outcomes was carried out comparing the pre-and-post surveys, using a 5-point Likert scale (ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree). The statistical analysis of the experimental guided group results showed an increase in critical thinking, innovation, problem-solving, and self-direction compared to the control group students. However, the leadership competency did not show any improvement in both groups. We concluded that implementing the RBL methodology for students in the early stages of engineering education promoted and reinforced the development of technical and transversal competencies
