Pledging to Do “Good”: An Early Commitment Pledge Program, College Scholarships, and High School Outcomes in Washington State

Indiana, Oklahoma, and Washington each have programs designed to address college enrollment gaps by offering a promise of state-based college financial aid to low-income middle school students in exchange for making a pledge to do well in high school, be a good citizen, not be convicted of a felony, and apply for financial aid to college. Using a triple-difference specification, we estimate the effects of Washington’s College Bound Scholarship program on students’ high school grades, high school graduation, juvenile detention and rehabilitation, and incarceration in state prison during high school or early adulthood. We find insignificant and substantively small or negative effects on these outcomes. These results call into question the rationale for such early commitment programs.

Abstract. Research has shown that psychosocial factors (PSFs) have a positive impact on high school outcomes, including grades and persistence. However, few longitudinal studies have examined the nature of these relationships. We report on a longitudinal study of middle school students followed through high school completion. We found that high school GPA mediates the effects of prior academic achievement, demographics, and most PSFs on on-time high school graduation. A measure of self-regulation had a significant direct effect on on-time graduation. The results underscore the importance of PSFs in predicting academic outcomes, even after accounting for prior achievement and demographics. Implications of examining PSFs early in students’ academic progression are discussed.

Abstract. This study investigated the effects of politicians’ nonparticipatory and participatory Facebook posts on young people’s political efficacy – a key determinant of political participation. We employed an experimental design, using a sample of N = 125 high school students (15–20 years). Participants either saw a Facebook profile with no posts (control condition), nonparticipatory posts, or participatory posts. While nonparticipatory posts did not affect participants’ political efficacy, participatory posts exerted distinct effects. For those high in trait evaluations of the politician presented in the stimulus material or low in political cynicism, we found significant positive effects on external and collective efficacy. By contrast, for those low in trait evaluations or high in cynicism, we found significant negative effects on external and collective efficacy. We did not find any effects on internal efficacy. The importance of content-specific factors and individual predispositions in assessing the influence of social media use on participation is discussed.

<p>Students drop out of schools for many reasons, and it has negative effects on the individual and society. This paper reports a study using data published in 2015 from the Educational Longitudinal Study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics to analyze the influence of parental involvement on low-achieving U.S. students’ graduation rates from high school. Findings indicate that both students and parents share the same perspective on the need for parental involvement in their academic progress. For low-achieving high school students, parental involvement in academic work is a positive factor influencing students’ graduation from high school.</p>

Objetivo: El presente estudio pretende identificar la prevalencia y factores asociados a la experimentación de tabaco en adolescentes.Método: El estudio epidemiológico, transversal, descriptivo y analítico realizado con una muestra aleatoria simple de escolares con edad de 14 a 19 años, matriculados en escuelas públicas de enseñanza media de la red estadual del área urbana del municipio de Jequié-BA. Se utilizó un cuestionario auto-aplicable de llenado voluntario, tras la firma del término de consentimiento libre y aclarado por el responsable cuando menor de 18 años. Se empleó el programa Epi DATA para la digitación de los datos y programa SPSS para calcular la razón de prevalencia y realizar la regresión de Poisson. Resultados: En el estudio de 765 adolescentes, siendo 59,9% del sexo femenino, 80,4% de etnia no blanca, 71,4% sin ocupación remunerada, 74% menos favorecidos económicamente y 37,9% consumen bebida alcohólica. El promedio de edad fue de 16,55 años (dp ± 1,33) años. La prevalencia de la experimentación de tabaco fue del 22,4%. Las variables: padres fuman (RP = 1,57, IC95%: 1,15-2,12), amigos fuman (RP = 2,15, IC95%: 1,56-2,95), uso de bebidas alcohólicas PR = 2,05; IC del 95%: 1.46 a 2.88) y la edad (OR = 1,36; IC del 95%: 1,01-1,84) fueron los que permitieron predecir mejor el riesgo de que un escolar experimente con el tabaco. Conclusiones: La prevalencia de experimentación fue 22,4%, y las variables que mejor permitieron predecir la predisposición de un escolar a experimentar el tabaco fueron tener padres fumadores, tener amigos que fuman, hacer uso de bebidas alcohólicas y ser del grupo de edad de 17 a 19 años. Objective: The present study aims to identify the prevalence and factors associated with cigarette experimentation among adolescents.Method: Cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical epidemiological study carried out with a simple random sample of students aged 14-19 years enrolled in public high schools in the urban area of the city of Jequié, in the state of Bahia. The variables: parental smoking (PR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.15-2.12), smoking friends (RP = 2.15, 95% CI: 1.56-2.95), alcohol drinking (OR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.46-2.88), and age group (RP = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.01-1.84) were the best predictors of the risk for experimentation with cigarettes among high school students.Conclusions: The prevalence of experimentation was 22.4%, and the variables that best predicted the likelihood of experimenting with tobacco among high school students were smoking parents, smoking friends, alcohol use and aged 17-19 years. To determine the extent to which self-concept could reliably predict whether black high school students would be correctly classified as having advantaged (middle) or disadvantaged (lower) economic status 200 middle- and 200 lower-status boys and girls from five high school grades of a large southeastern city were given the Tennessee Self-concept Scale. The model utilizing 8 variables correctly classified 266 subjects as 180 advantaged and 220 disadvantaged. More correct classifications (143) were made for disadvantaged than for advantaged (123). More students in lower grades were correctly placed; more students in upper grades were classified as disadvantaged. Fewer misclassifications (30.5%) of girls were made than of boys (36.5%). Variables with the highest standardized discriminant coefficients were Identity and Personal Self.

Generalized trust, the faith we place in strangers, is a fundamental attribute of democratic societies. We investigate the development of generalized trust using survey data collected from Romanian high school students within a multi-level, panel research design. We find that diversity in the classroom, defined through ethnic and socio-economic differences, has negative effects on generalized trust. Associational membership interacts indirectly with diversity, counteracting the negative impact of ethnic diversity but reinforcing socio-economic distinctions. The findings support cultural theories of generalized trust and point to the potentially positive role educational policy might play in encouraging trust among youths.

Social networks are a way of creating a virtual identity and entering into relationships with strangers in a series of interactions that were not known to a man before the existence of the Internet. Mobile phones and the virtual world often create a personality of a person that is not the same in the real world. It can be said that technology has changed the course of humanity and human consciousness and contributed to many changes in the mentality of society, especially among the youth. Children are often overwhelmed by materialism and jealousy, which further encourages them to become an unconscious, immoral and unambitious population. One of the negative effects of social networks is the abuse of privacy, which is also becoming a growing problem everywhere in the world and should not be ignored. However, a positive attitude should be maintained when it comes to social networks, because they facilitate communication, access to information and learning, greater availability of services and free advertising of some products or services. High school students use the Internet intensively every day, and the work raises the question of whether they use it constructively or destructively. The research was conducted in 2019, the population of high school students was observed and 100 students were included on the territory of Belgrade, Niš and Vitina.
