AbstractObjectivesAdolescence, a crucial period for growth velocity including sexual maturation, is an important period of life and young adolescent girls need to have proper knowledge, positive attitudes and practice of balanced diet to achieve optimum growth and development. Considering its importance this study attempts to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of balanced diets among adolescent schoolgirls in Noakhali district, Bangladesh.MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in three secondary schools in Noakhali district, Bangladesh. A multistage sampling techniques was used to select schools and study participants. A total of 485 adolescent school girls participated and a pre-designed, validated and structured questionnaire was used for data collection. In addition to descriptive statistics, chi-square test and logistic regression were employed for analysis.ResultsThe results from the study revealed that more than half of the students did not have good knowledge about a balanced diet, 42.8% had a positive attitude, whereas the practice of consuming a balanced diet was rather low (only 4.5%). Students studying in government schools had better knowledge and attitudes than non-government school students. Moreover, 41.1% of students were underweight; more than 60% of respondent’s mothers did not have an education higher than secondary school and were mostly unemployed housewives. Parent’s education, mother’s occupation, and types of school have a strong association with KAP; however, father’s education and occupation showed an association of varying degrees. Being knowledgeable was related to positive attitudes, and students with good knowledge had (OR: 1.828; 95% CI: 1.270–2.631) more likely to have positive attitudes towards a balanced diet.ConclusionsThus, proper knowledge about a balanced diet should be introduced with basic nutritional knowledge to all levels of public education. Interventions and programs can be designed to improve knowledge, attitude, and more specifically the practice at the household level so that adolescent girls can have a proper diet during their sexual maturation phase.

Background & Objectives: Anemia is a global health problem. About 40% of the world's population suffers from anemia and adolescence is one of the most vulnerable age group. Hence the objective of the study was to determine prevalence and distribution of anemia among adolescent girls in eastern part of Nepal.Materials & Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in a Government School of Dharan over a period of one year. There were total 433 participants, whose clinical and demographic profile were recorded and analyzed. Hemoglobin estimation was done by using cyanmethaemoglobin method and anemia was defined as per WHO cut-off.Results: The overall prevalence of anemia was found to be 51.3%. Prevalence was significantly more in pre-menarche age and undernourished girls (p<0.05). However factors like diet (vegetarian/non-vegetarian), worm infestation and parental education did not have a significant impact on occurrence of anemia.Conclusion: Anemia is the major health problem among adolescent girls in eastern part Nepal with high prevalence rate and nutrition is one of the leading causative factors for anemia.JCMS Nepal. 2016;12(1):19-22.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between achievement motivation and parental encouragement of adolescent girls in district Anantnag. The study was descriptive-correlational in nature and the data were collected using achievement motivation scale and parental encouragement scale through survey method. The sample of the study was 200 adolescent girls selected through random sampling technique. A significant positive relationship was found between achievement motivation and parental encouragement of adolescent girls. The study revealed significant difference on achievement motivation and parental encouragement among private and government adolescent girls in district Anantnag. Private school adolescent girls have higher achievement motivation and parental encouragement as compared to government school adolescent girls.

Background No information exists regarding the health of the adolescent girls residing in Kathmandu valley in urban setup.Objective To evaluate the prevalence of undernutrition among the adolescent girls living in Kathmandu valley. It also aims to know the distribution of weight, height and body mass index of adolescent girls in relation to the different adolescent age groups.Method A cross sectional study was conducted in one government and two private schools in Kathmandu valley from 16th April to 15th September 2010. Anthropometric measurements were recorded using standardized methodology as recommended by World Health Organization (WHO). Standard operational definitions like percentiles, mean, standard deviation and proportions were used for analysis.Result Four hundred adolescent girls were enrolled randomly, out of which 111 girls (27.8%) were from government school and 289 girls (72.2 %) were from private schools. Maximum were of 16 years of age and the least were of 19 years of age, mean age being 15.4 years of age. Of them, early, mid and late adolescents were 41%, 35% and 24% respectively. Around one third of the study population were stunted (32%), one fourth were underweight (24%) and one tenth of them were thin (9.5%) based on National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS )standard.Both underweight and stunted girls were significantly more during the late adolescence period (P<0.001). However, thinness was not significant in any of the three adolescent age groups.Conclusion A high prevalence of undernutrition in terms of stunting, underweight and thinness exists among the adolescent girls in Kathmandu valley.

Introduction: India is a developing country, it has made advancements in every field, but stillmenstruation is a topic of social taboo in many rural and suburban parts of the country, as peoplefeel shy and difficult to discuss it openly, even mothers, sisters and teachers are not able to providecorrect information regarding menstruation physiology and its hygiene. Objective: To educateadolescent girls and assess the impact of health education on them. Methods: About 400adolescent girls aged 11-19 years from 3 government schools of Jabalpur were interviewed using apretested and predesigned questionnaire in the local language. Health education regarding hygienicpractices during menstruation was given through audiovisual aids after filling out the questionnaire.Results: out of 400 girls,291(72%) girls already knew that menstruation is a physiological processwhich increased significantly to 307(76.8%). Knowledge was poor about the source and type ofbleed; only 99 (24.8%) knew that the original was the uterus. Only 59(14.8%)girls were usingsanitary napkins. In contrast, most of them were using old cloth265(66.3%)of which 86.3% werewashing it with soap and water, and 67.3% used to dry them inside their houses, which increasedsignificantly after imparting health education to 99%and decreased to 6% respectively. Conclusion:The result of this study indicates that there is a need for the establishment of a comprehensiveschool health education programme with solid familial input. Teachers should be trained to providehealth education about menstruation, its physiology and correct hygienic practices, as theadolescent girls will turn into mothers one day.

Anemia is the most common nutrient deficiency caused due to deficiency of iron, commonly found in adolescent girls and women. A study on knowledge level regarding anemia among adolescent girls in Dharwad, Karnataka through assessment of the knowledge, attitude and practice among the reproductive age group' was undertaken. A questionnaire was prepared, consisting general information, knowledge level, practices followed and frequency of consumption of foods rich in iron. The government school in the village of Narendra, near Dharwad District of Karnataka State was selected for the study. The adolescent girls (N=60) studying in high school were selected for the survey. Nutritional knowledge regarding anemia was imparted to the participants. Pre and post knowledge test were compared to study impact of nutrition education. Adolescent girls belonged to age group of 14 to 16 years. Family occupation was agriculture 33 (55%) and non-agriculture 27 (45%). Significant increase was observed in knowledge level of adolescent girls from 26.50 (44.80%) in pre-test to 53.00 (87.86%) post-test with t – value of 8.68. No significant difference was observed in practices followed. Green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, milk and milk products were consumed on daily basis. Fruits, germinated grains and fermented foods were consumed on weekly basis. Majority of them that is nearly 70 % of adolescent girls were vegetarians and did not consume meat. Egg was consumed on a weekly or monthly basis. Among nuts, groundnut was commonly consumed. There was no much difference observed in frequency of food consumption between pre-test and post-test. Background: Under nourished adolescent girls are more likely to give birth to malnourished child when they become pregnant and deliver. Hence their nutritional status is of much more importance. Objectives were to study the nutritional status of adolescent girls, to study the correlates and determinants of nutritional status and compare it between government and private schools.Methods: A school based cross sectional study was carried out for a period of three months. This study was comparative in nature, comparing the adolescent girls from government and private schools. It was possible to study 74 and 97 adolescent girls from government and private schools respectively. Anthropometric measurements were recorded using standard guidelines.Results: There were only 4 cases (5.4%) of underweight and only 3 cases (4.1%) in government school. Similarly there was only one case (1.03%) of underweight and only 7 (7.2%) of the cases in the private school. The mean height was significantly less among the children from government school compared to the private school. But there was no difference between the mean weight and BMI of children from two schools.Conclusions: Prevalence of overweight and obesity was low in the present study. It was not found to be associated with education and occupation of parents and type of family.
