: The reason that the oral route attained such acceptance may be ascribed to its affluence of administration. Over the years, patient convenience- oriented exploration in the area of drug delivery has introduced potential innovative medicine delivery systems. The elegant drug delivery system is an amalgamation of science and dexterity with therapeutic prospect and presentability. It involves the administration of medications in a groundbreaking fashion with the assistance of cosmetics, wearable devices and oral drug delivery system which can also be used for ornamental purposes. Out of which, therapeutic chewing gum offers a highly suitable and amenable technique of dosing medications comprising children and elderlies. It is a potentially convenient means of administering medications either locally or systematically via the oral cavity. It bids innumerable gains over conventional drug delivery methods. Moreover, medicinal chewing gums involve the dynamic and constant masticatory actions for drug release. Currently, enriched expertise has made it promising to advance and fabricate medicated chewing gum with predefined properties and it could be a marketable triumph in the future. Apprehending this, several investigators and pharmaceutical companies are now engaged in developing innovative practices vis-à-vis medicated chewing gums by filing several patents in this area. The present manuscript also delivers a gestalt of various patented technology platforms based on different methods/ mechanisms employed for the preparation of medicated chewing gums.

BACKGROUND: Turmeric extract is less effective because the main ingredient of curcumin has a low solubility. Therefore, it is necessary to convert turmeric extract into a solid dispersion form to increase the dissolution of curcumin. AIM: To determine the antibacterial activity of mucoadhesive gastroretentive drug delivery system of alginate beads containing solid dispersion of turmeric extract. METHODS: Turmeric powder was macerated with 96% ethanol for 8 days. The macerate was evaporated with a rotary evaporator at 50°C to obtain concentrated extract. Solid dispersion of turmeric extract was prepared by solvent method by using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) K30 with a ratio of 1: 1 and 1: 2. The solid dispersion of turmeric extract was encapsulated with alginate gel by gelation method. The antibacterial of alginate beads containing solid dispersion of turmeric extract was tested by using hole agar plate diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli as bacterial models. RESULTS: The size of alginate beads containing turmeric extract-PVP solid dispersion was about 1.3 mm. Antibacterial activity test against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli showed that alginate beads containing turmeric extract-PVP solid dispersion gave stronger antibacterial activity than those containing turmeric extract without solid dispersion. The antibacterial activity of alginate beads turmeric extract-PVP (1: 2) solid dispersion was stronger than those containing turmeric-extract (1: 1) solid dispersion. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that alginate beads containing turmeric extract-PVP solid dispersion gives the stronger antibacterial activity than those containing turmeric extract without solid dispersion.

Chewing gum is a highly convenient and controlled release transbuccal drug delivery system taken without water. It is gaining popularity as a selfadministrable carrier for the medication used for motion sickness, smoke cessation, hypertension, xerostomia, dental caries, pain, as nutritive and energy supplements. Functional chewing gum favors both local and systemic effects intended to be chewed about half an hour. It has emerged out with a fast onset of action either by direct absorption or swallowed with saliva into gastrointestinal tract. It has better bioavailability that lowers the doses and reduces the gastric side-effects. Gums adhere with ease and compliance of administration to children and dysphagia patients. Chewing gums are formulated using a water-insoluble gum base with water-soluble excipients with the active ingredient in the case of medicated gums. European Pharmacopeia standards used for release studies, there are no other particular official standards. It has attracted the researchers as successful potential drug delivery system in coming future. The present article reviews it as novel drug delivery system including its merits and limitations, material and methods of formulation and evaluation.
