In popular culture the relationship between science and religion has often been portrayed as one of conflict. The impact of the conflict thesis can be observed in church leaders’ hesitancy in talking about science and religion in the public domain. It was this finding that led Revd Professor David Wilkinson (cosmologist and theologian) and Professor Tom McLeish (physicist and Anglican lay reader) to form the project ‘Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science’ funded by The Templeton World Charity Foundation. The data presented in this article (collected during 2015-2018) is derived from two discreet pieces of research. The first consisting of a survey of over 1,000 church leaders and interviews with 20 senior church leaders and, the second, with a strategic focus on ministerial training comprised of 12 interviews with church educationalists. This paper reflects on the findings from both pieces of research – covering topics such as church leaders’ enthusiasm towards science, how church leaders view the relationship between science and religion and the role of compartmentalisation in ministerial training. The article is unique in providing sociological analysis on the relevant data and including a personal reflection by David Wilkinson – the project’s director – on the implications of the research for ministerial training and science.

AbstractThe development of increasingly advanced technology has influenced the lives of believers, one of which is gadgets. Gadgets are a daily necessity and even a basic necessity. This development is very good. However, not all of these developments must be followed. Even Christian youths are involved in the alcohol trend. This is not a good situation. Christian leaders need to see and anticipate this so that the congregation does not carry on with the flow of developments that will distract people from the life that should be an example for their surroundings. The method used by the author is a qualitative method. Qualitative Method because of the problem regarding the decline of Christian leadership in the Millennial Era. In this era, Christian leaders who are superior in character are needed. Not a few of Christian leaders do not care about their character. This requires the willingness of Christian leaders who want to build their character so that they become superior and capable Christian leaders. Because without good character, leaders are unable to lead. Character is the main thing that is prepared by Christian leaders to become leaders.

This research discusses the internalization of human values in children facing the COVID-19 pandemic in Padangsidimpuan. It was found that there were actions that were inappropriate for mothers, teachers and the community. Mothers understand the COVID-19 pandemic from a negative point of view. Mother forbids the children to see each other. The teacher advised the children not to leave the house. People advise children not to play outside of parental guidance. These are all inappropriate actions in understanding social distancing and staying at home as one of the government's appeals. However, it can follow play, study, and gather protocols. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on how the actions of mothers, teachers and society in children face the COVID-19 pandemic? How to internalize human values against the COVID-19 pandemic in Padangsidimpuan City? The results of the study found that mothers, teachers, and the community provided a more appropriate understanding of children and instilled the importance of being grateful to Allah SWT, feeling empathy for children whose parents were indicated to have COVID-19 and internalizing egalitarian, humanitarian attitudes, namely respect, care, share, strengthen hearts, and put forward identity so that life becomes useful.

Traditional and Christian leaders in Akan communities in Ghana provide leadership services for the same Akan people. For proper internal harmony and identity devoid of identity crises, the two leadership systems should not only understand each other but must be willing to learn relevant values and lessons from each other. The integration which has already taken place among Akan traditional leaders as they have over the years learnt Christian leadership values and lessons from churches and mission schools is yet to take place properly in Christian leadership formation. This article seeks to analyse the values and lessons in Akan traditional leadership formation and its significance for Christian leadership formation. Observation and interviews of the Akan traditional leadership institution at Akuapim, Akyem and Asante and examination of secondary materials on early interpreters of the interaction between the Akan traditional leadership institution with the Christian faith are used to gather qualitative data. Akan traditional leadership formation pays much attention to matters of royal consciousness, leadership as service, mentoring, the celebration of the Adae festival and oath swearing. Christian leadership formation that seeks to avoid the church being alien on Akan cultural soil will need to pay attention to the indigenous leadership formation when addressing issues on institutional memory, stewardship, women in leadership, leadership as service and accountability in Christian leadership. Keywords: Akan, Christian, Traditional Leadership, Leadership Formation.

The development of Christian leaders is a key need in much of the Global South. Research has shown that churches that have a contextualized pattern of leadership are more likely to grow and less likely to be perceived as foreign. This article describes a process that missionaries can use with local leaders to define a God-honoring, culturally appropriate pattern of Christian leadership. It does this by drawing on research on Millet Christians’ perceptions of what makes a good leader as well as literature on cross-cultural variability in leadership. Three practical steps that cross-cultural workers can take to work with local leaders to define a contextualized pattern of leadership are outlined.

This study examines the evolution of Schwartz’s Basic Human Values during the COVID-19 outbreak, and their relationships with perceived threat, compliance with movement restrictions and social distancing. An online questionnaire was administered to a heterogeneous sample of French citizens (N = 1025) during the first French lockdown related to the outbreak. Results revealed a significant evolution of values; the conservation value was higher during the outbreak than usual, and both self-enhancement and openness-to-change values were lower during the COVID-19 outbreak than usual. Conservation and perceived threat during the outbreak were robustly and positively related to both compliance with movement restrictions and social distancing. Conservation during the outbreak emerged as a significant partial mediator of the relationship between perceived threat and outcomes (i.e., compliance with movement restrictions and social distancing). Implications of these results for the malleability of values and the COVID-19 modelling are discussed.

The author reflects on the reality of nepotism in Christian leadership as he has observed in the township of Soshanguve and many other African poverty-stricken communities he has lived in. The leadership of churches in those areas seems to run in the family. This model tends to have a disempowering effect on the other church members in terms of taking responsibility or initiating projects that could expand the impact of the church beyond the borders of its walls. This article recognises the positive impact of nepotism, but it mostly stresses on the negative impact of nepotism on the democratisation of power in the church and society. It uses music, a critical vehicle of knowledge acquisition in Africa, to stress upon the fact that Christian leaders should be equipped to participate in the common good, help in the empowerment of ordinary people around them, starting with their members and be altruistic, like Jesus, and work beyond the boundaries of their families.

AbstractLeadership is an integral part of all human civilization because everyone needs a leader. Leader and leadership cannot be separated from one another. Where the purpose of choosing a leader is to influence, admonish, direct the people they lead to the goals they want to achieve. Thus, leadership is more likely to function and not position. The world offers and shapes leaders who are more focused on position and authority. This clearly contradicts the leadership of Jesus Christ in John 13: 1-20. It happens in Christian leadership today. Some of the Christian leaders have not been able to be examples of holiness in life, where they are not willing and able to leave old habits. Sometimes some of the Christian leaders live in enmity, either with the congregation, council or with fellow Christian leaders. Based on the above problems, the author will examine more deeply referring to the title: "Implementation of the Leadership of Jesus Christ According to John 13: 1-20, with the aim and purpose of knowing the relevance of the leadership model of Jesus Christ According to John 13: 1-20 for Christian leadership in the future. now, in order to become a guide in Christian leadership today.
