Abstract: This article is a result of an R&D (Research & Development) study which used a 4-D model to develope a teaching material in the form of student’s work sheet that based on science process skill. A valid teaching material has been developed in 2015. The framework of the work sheets was composed of identify (core competence, basic competence, topic, objective), inquiry question, analytical question, and conclusive question. The framework could minimalized the guiding expalanation as often found in experiment manual books. The result showed that the students’ performance in practicing the experiment given was in sufficient category, all of the student were responded positively and all of the activities expected in the learning process were impelemented. Key words: work sheet, science process skill.

Back in 1988, Tom Snyder (of Tom Snyder Productions, one of the most famous early software publishing companies) and Jane Palmer wrote a prophetic book called In Search of the Most Amazing Thing: Children, Education, and Computers. Their thesis was twofold: First, they pointed out that technology, which was just beginning to be introduced in grade schools, was so compelling that educators were “… more interested in so-called computer literacy than the real thing, literacy” (p. 2). Snyder and Palmer called for stakeholders to determine what their educational priorities were, and then to figure out what technology could do to support them. Second, they emphasized the view that teachers are indispensible components in the teaching and learning process, and that no computer will ever take their place. After 20 years, we believe that Snyder and Palmer would be gratified to read Heid and Blume's newly published two-volume set that contains a thorough anthology of how educators have defined priorities for the teaching and learning of mathematics and the pivotal roles that both the teacher and the technology play within that process. In our view, the editors have attained their goal of assembling a comprehensive digest that “… will enable the creation and implementation of curricula that capitalize on technology and will help teachers orchestrate the use of technological tools in school mathematics classrooms” (vol. 2, p. viii).

Practice of children’s learning/teaching is frequently based on tradicional attitude to a child as a person and a childhood as an immature period in terms of social and cultural meanings (Juodaitytė, 2003, Gulløv, 2005b; Hviid, 2005; Juodaitytė, 2007). Contemporary pedagogy supports a variety of approaches to childhood: from general definition of it as a period, grounding it on psychogenetic peculiarities of this period and ascribing “imperfection” to it as a necessary and self-explanatory characteristics, to its mythologized, strained explanation, employing its pseudo-scientific interpretation, based on theories of “wild thinking”, “primitive civilisations” or “natural selection”.

Next to such socio-cultural discourse, which prevails in the educational reality, another discourse, which represents the culture children’s informal learning, emerges that implies the culture of children’s self-learning. It is based on the roles, rules that are acceptable to children themselves in the process of learning and the practice of children’s learning (Jurašaitė, 1999; Dencik, 2005; Gulløv, 2005a, 2005b; Hviid, 2005; Jenks, 2005;Juul, 2005a, 2005b). According to such conception, a child is a creator of social order, who is responsible for own learning process and its outcomes.

One of the conditions for children’s independent learning is a free choice of means, environments, sources, techniques and others. Informal home setting during summer creates favourable conditions for children’s independent learning because children are provided with a choice: how to use various aids, what environments and resources to use for self-learning and what learning methods to apply taking into account own needs and abilities.

The problem questionsof theresearch: How does child’s freedom manifest itself in processes of self-learning and how is the socio-cultural identity of an informally learning child conceptualised?

Research aim – to reveal the expression of the freedom of children’s who learn informally in a free (unstructured) setting when analysing how children conceptualisethemselves in this process and create the identity of the one learning in the informal independent way.

Research object – expression of socio-cultural identity of children, who learn informally in a free (unstructured) setting.
