In recent decades, a stagnation or even a decline in pedestrian traffic has been observed in many cities, despite the ambitious efforts of national and international action plans, strategies and initiatives. Our project "Walk Your City" addresses this problem by designing, developing and evaluating an innovative, behavioral-based pedestrian initiative with a focus on the nudging method. The applied nudging framework includes gamification as well as crowdsourcing elements and aims to decisively improve the quality of life in cities by promoting walking as an active and health-enhancing activity. The core of our approach is represented by nudges which are triggered via an app as well as offline campaigns. The story refers to a not so distant dystopian future where the pilot city Graz suffers from pollution, traffic chaos as well as climate change. Via regular walking as well as visiting places such as parks or viewpoints users of the app are rewarded with tokens. Following the idea of crowdsourcing these tokens can be invested into wishes for improvement such as parking benches or zebra crossings. Through this unique combination of technological innovations, playful approaches, behavioral concepts and creative campaigns, participants are motivated to explore and experience the city on foot. Walking should be perceived as a genuine and healthy alternative for short distances and anchored as first choice when covering small distances. The nudging-method will be iteratively optimized in terms of acceptance, functionality and usability using focus groups, internal lab tests and expert workshops. This strategy will a practice-oriented project implementation that is tailored to the needs of different target groups such as students, commuters as well as tourists. The mobility and health data obtained during the pilot test will be used to evaluate the suitability and impact of the nudging method in course of an academic paper. As the empirical data show, a behavioral change in terms of a larger share of walking in the modal split as well a positive impact on the interest and awareness regarding the effects of walking could be observed.

The quality of urban space in terms of walkability can be assessed taking many parameters into account, such as the presence of sidewalks, their density and continuity, appropriate technical parameters as well as the presence of greenery, squares, parks, which create the environment for pedestrian traffic. The lack of travel barriers, the possibility to shorten the route, travel safety and security, the presence of street furniture, shops and services are also significant. This article concerns some of the above described factors and presents selected research results on the use of space in city centers of several Polish cities – Kraków, Gdańsk, Szczecin, Warsaw, Gdynia, Wrocław and Poznań as well as the results of an analysis on the friendliness of this space for pedestrian traffic. The first phase of this study was to determine the share of public space within the analyzed city center areas, and then define areas used as roads, infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, squares, green areas, parks and public courtyards. The balance of the used space was created for each researched area, and the space dedicated to pedestrian traffic was additionally analyzed in terms of the presence of obstacles as well as sidewalk location. The analysis results prove that that greatest amount of the public space is located in the city center of Poznań, and the smallest in Kraków. Warsaw is characterized by the greatest and Szczecin by the smallest percentage of the pedestrian infrastructure. Szczecin dominates in terms of the share of roads in the downtown area, Wrocław in terms of squares and Gdańsk – public courtyards.

The promotion of physical activity (PA) in children and their parents requires effective planning and sometimes even interventions. This study shows the effect of PA during a 15-week intervention program “Junior for Seniors” by applying a socioecological model to the interpretation of the data. This comprehensive approach emphasizes the fact that health promotion should focus not only on intrapersonal factors but also on the multilevel factors that might be determinants and modulators of increased PA. In 2015, 24 children (“juniors,” 14 girls and 10 boys, agedM=7.96±0.69) and 22 parents (“seniors,” 14 mothers agedM=38.86±2.96and 8 fathers agedM=37.38±2.97) were voluntarily enrolled in a study spread across three primary schools in the city of Poznań, Poland. The effectiveness of the intervention was determined according to postintervention behavioural changes in PA in comparison to preintervention levels, as reported by the parents and children. Overall, the study found increases in PA levels and reductions in sedentary time. Although the changes are modest, there are some unrecognized benefits of the intervention which may have occurred, such as improved sport and motor skills, more frequent family social behaviours (walks, meals, and visiting relatives), or simply improved quality of “do-together” leisure time PA.

The idea of “good quality of life” cities was introduced to Poland in 2006, when the Polish National Cittaslow City Network was founded i.a. by Lidzbark Warmiński. In the context of popularizing the idea—slow-style of life—it was decided to undertake research aimed at identifying the influence of the Cittaslow concept on the initiation of actions that have a positive impact on local sustainable development. Referring to the main objective of the study, the hypothesis was accepted stating that membership in the Cittaslow network has a positive impact on the local development of the city, as it is a source of new projects undertaken by the authorities that improve the quality of life of the inhabitants and at the same time are implemented with the participation of local communities. The hypothesis was verified in a survey conducted in 2017 and 2019 among the residents of the city of Lidzbark Warmiński, using a questionnaire. As the research shows and the research of other authors confirms, the quality of life in cities belonging to the Cittaslow network has significantly improved over the last few years. Residents also assessed the degree of satisfaction of their needs and the level of development of the local city against other cities in the region. Obtaining the opinion of residents regarding the Cittaslow network as a direction of local sustainable development, as well as assessing its impact on the quality of life of the urban community turned out to be important from the perspective of further analysis. This issue is important because the idea of the international association Cittaslow is to promote the potential of smaller towns as an alternative to living in big cities, the rush and progressive globalization. Cities in the network are committed to sustainable development by shaping a conscious urban policy, the right relationship between economic growth, the environment and improving the quality of life of residents.

Currently, at a time when the Smart City concept is aimed at improving the quality of life of residents and being implemented in cities, the role of measuring the functioning of offices in relation to the customer is growing. The publication presents the results of research on the quality of service to residents by public administration on the example of municipal offices in Poland. The aim of the research, resulting from the identified research gap, was to examine the level of customer service quality in Polish municipal offices and to determine whether monitoring the quality of life and the quality of public services provided affect the quality of customer service. The research was carried out on a wide sample of 287 cities located around Poland, the sample was selected at random. The sample was good in such a way as to maintain the structure by province. The survey included questions rated on a 5-point Likert scale. The conducted research shows that there are no statistically significant differences in the level of customer service quality by municipal offices between individual provinces of Poland. Based on the research, it was found that: the existence of a quality-of-life department in the city has a positive impact on the quality of customer service in the office; monitoring the quality of life of residents and the quality of public services provided by the municipal office has a positive impact on the quality of customer service in the office, the implementation of the ISO 37120 standard by the municipal office has a positive impact on the quality of customer service in the city. A particularly high correlation occurs in the case of the impact of monitoring the quality of customer service.
