Fasting can halt viral reproduction and relieve symptoms. Simultaneous fasting with moderate intake of boiled rice water or fruit juice for 2 to 3 days may achieve positive effect. If a person has 30 contacts daily, and 6 of which are viral carriers, simultaneous fasting can reduce viral loads in all the 6 carriers and thus lower infection rate by perhaps more than 90%. Individuals not suitable for fasting should be excluded from pilot test and large experiments. Multiple episodes of fasting with proper intervals can be conducted to beat pandemic or control viral infection at its infancy.

Calorie restriction limits the intake of amino acids. Various food regimens can restrict the intake of essential amino acids or all amino acids. To contain pandemics, multiple episodes of 1 to 3 days of simultaneous fasting with modest boiled rice water or fruit juice can be employed, separated by pure starch-based diet or rice starch-based diet with moderate fruit juice intake.

Presented are the experimental data on the effect of biofungicides on seed infection and mycoflora of winter wheat seeds of varieties ‘Levada’ and ‘Podolyanka’. The phytostudy which was conducted allowed to determine the presence of micromycetes such as Alternaria alternata (infection rate 6.8–19.5 %), Tilletia caries (1–2 %), Fusarium spp. (0.5–3.5 %), Cladosporium herbarum (1.5–3.5 %), Bipolaris sorokiniana (1.0–4.8 %), Mucor spp. (1.5–12 %), Penicillium spp. (0.5–1.5 %), and Aspergillus spp. (1–1.5 %) on the seeds. The trend to decrease laboratory germination and lower infection rate was observed after the seeds were treated with biofungicides Gaubsin, Planriz, and Trichodermin. The positive effect of the biofungicides on the morphometric parameters of two-weeks-old plants was observed: 1.6 to 2 times increase in height, 2.1 to 2.8 times increase in the lengths of the roots, and 2.7 to 4.4 and 3.4 to 5.5 times increase in phytomass, respectively. The positive effect of Trichodermin on developing winter wheat plants was noted.

Abstract Objectives: Coronavirushas had profound effects on people’s lives and the economy of many countries, generating controversy between the need to establish quarantines and other social distancing measures to protect people’s health and the need to reactivate the economy. This study proposes and applies a modification of the SIR infection model to describe the evolution of coronavirus infections and to measure the effect of quarantine on the number of people infected. Methods: Two hypotheses, not necessarily mutually exclusive, are proposed for the impact of quarantines. According to the first hypothesis, quarantine reduces the infection rate, delaying new infections over time without modifying the total number of people infected at the end of the wave. The second hypothesis establishes that quarantine reduces the population infected in the wave. The two hypotheses are tested with data for a sample of 10 districts in Santiago, Chile. Results: The results of applying the methodology show that the proposed model describes well the evolution of infections at the district level. The data shows evidence in favor of the first hypothesis, quarantine reduces the infection rate; and not in favor of the second hypothesis, that quarantine reduces the population infected. Districts of higher socio-economic levels have a lower infection rate, and quarantine is more effective. Conclusions: Quarantine, in most districts, does not reduce the total number of people infected in the wave; it only reduces the rate at which they are infected. The reduction in the infection rate avoids peaks that may collapse the health system.

This study was aimed at providing practical information to improve Korean adolescents’ wellness by empirically identifying its correlation with sports participation and having an internal health locus of control (IHLC) during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study comprised both a pilot test and a main study. We recruited 844 Korean adolescents as subjects in January 2021 to participate in an online self-reported survey. The reliability and validity of the scales used (sports participation, IHLC, and wellness) were verified through a pilot test. In the main study, we verified the differences between all variables according to adolescents’ demographic characteristics and the structural relationship of sports participation, IHLC, and wellness. Sports participation had a positive effect on IHLC (p < 0.001) and wellness (p < 0.001). Additionally, IHLC had a positive effect on wellness (p < 0.001). In juvenile educational institutions, there is a need to develop strategies to increase wellness, sports participation, and IHLC among adolescent students, which can improve their wellness in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For patients on dialysis, infection is the second leading cause of mortality. Iron metabolism should be considered in the pathogenesis of infectious disease, as high local iron concentrations favor the growth of many microbes. This review is intended to provide information regarding iron metabolism and infection in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. There are 2 reasons these patients may be vulnerable to infection: (1) the excessive iron administered to treat renal anemia could be associated with impairments of the host's innate immune response, (2) CKD-associated inflammation could cause dysregulated iron metabolism. Pathogenic microorganisms can be categorized as extracellular or intracellular pathogens. The proliferation site may determine the degree of virulence. In cases of mainly extracellular microbial growth, the host's strategy of sequestering iron in cells may efficiently inhibit proliferation. However, the same strategy may favor the intracellular growth of microorganisms. The administration of excessive amounts of iron may modify iron localization by an increase in the hepcidin concentration. We conclude that there is a need for large multicenter randomized controlled trials to evaluate the long-term safety of different iron administration patterns that allow for a lower infection rate while still producing efficient erythropoiesis in CKD patients.

The clinical effects of allopurinol on the attenuation of reperfusion injury in thumb replantations after prolonged ischaemic time were studied in a randomized control trial with a 2-year follow-up. There were 60 patients, in the trial group, and 38 patients in the control group. All were young, healthy labourers who had sharp or locally crushed amputations of the thumb at the proximal phalanx with a total ischaemic time of more than 10 hours. The standard management for thumb replantation was used in these patients, except that 300 mg allopurinol was given orally in the trial group on admission and a further 300 mg for another 5 days. After operation, the trial group had a lower infection rate, and less postoperative pain and chronic swelling than the control group. Recovery of sensation was also better in the trial group.

Particularly in the fruit juice industry, the remaining peels and pulp parts are not available for human consumption after the juices are used. It is possible to evaluate these wastes by adding them to poultry feeds. A number of studies have been conducted by researchers on the nutritional value of many fruit wastes and on the performance of poultry. Natural antioxidant content has been reported to have a positive effect on growth, microbial and immunological parameters when high fruit peels are used as feed additive in poultry feeding.

Two elementary parameters for quantifying viral infection and shedding are viral load and whether samples yield a replicating virus isolate in cell culture. We examined 25,381 German SARS-CoV-2 cases, including 6110 from test centres attended by pre-symptomatic, asymptomatic, and mildly-symptomatic (PAMS) subjects, 9519 who were hospitalised, and 1533 B.1.1.7 lineage infections. The youngest had mean log10 viral load 0.5 (or less) lower than older subjects and an estimated ~78% of the peak cell culture replication probability, due in part to smaller swab sizes and unlikely to be clinically relevant. Viral loads above 109 copies per swab were found in 8% of subjects, one-third of whom were PAMS, with mean age 37.6. We estimate 4.3 days from onset of shedding to peak viral load (8.1) and cell culture isolation probability (0.75). B.1.1.7 subjects had mean log10 viral load 1.05 higher than non-B.1.1.7, with estimated cell culture replication probability 2.6 times higher.

ABSTRACTHematopoiesis is finely regulated to enable timely production of the right number and type of mature immune cells to maintain tissue homeostasis. Dysregulated hematopoiesis may compromise antiviral immunity and/or exacerbate immunopathogenesis. Herein, we report an essential and new role of ubiquitin X domain containing gene 3B (UBXN3B) in balancing myelopoiesis and lymphopoiesis. Ubxn3b deficiency (Ubxn3b-/-) results in a remarkable increase in myeloid cells and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, along with a reduction in lymphocytes in steady-state mice. This dysregulation is exacerbated during viral infection and renders mice highly vulnerable to severe lung pathology induced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and arthritis by arthritogenic alphaviruses. Ubxn3b-/- mice present normal type I IFNs, higher viral loads and inflammatory mediators, lower virus-specific immunoglobulin G and slower resolution of disease, when compared to Ubxn3b+/+ littermates. Mechanistically, Ubxn3b-/- mice have fewer multipotent progenitors and common lymphoid progenitors, but more common myeloid progenitors. In particular, the precursor and immature B cell numbers are dramatically decreased in the bone marrow of Ubxn3b-/- mice. These data demonstrate that UBXN3B signaling is essential for restricting viral infection and immunopathogenesis by maintaining hematopoietic homeostasis.

This study was conducted in order to understand the impact of using dietary Camellia sinensis in broilers. In this regards several studies were explored and obtained findings were found to be much interesting and useful. In summary it has been reported by researchers that Camellia sinensis supports the feed intake (4480 g/b), water intake (8960 ml/b), live body weight (2356.8 g/b), weekly weight gain (2322.8 g/b), carcass weight (1381.8 g/b) and feed conversion ratio (1.92). Further, it was stated that Camellia sinensis reduces the relative weight of heart, liver, spleen, proventriculus, intestine and fat pad by 13.53, 61.1, 2.26, 58.13, 10.2 and 81.41%, respectively compared to their normal weights. Camellia sinensis enhances the immunity of broilers that results lower infection rate and mortality rate. Concerning digestibility it was indicated by researchers that digestibility of crude protein improves by 80.33%, ether extract by 76%, crude fiber 33.83% and metabolizable energy by 79.66%. In conclusion, Camellia sinensis has been proved an important dietary supplement for the broilers. It supports birds’ immunity, production and performance.
