Background: Chronic alcohol intake is related to hypertension. In the present work, we investigated the effect of Allablanckia floribunda Oliver (Clusiaceae) aqueous extract in alcohol-induced hypertensive rats and on related oxidative stress damages. Methods: Alcohol-induced hypertensive rats (AHR) was obtained by oral administration of ethanol (3 g/kg/day during 8 weeks). Blood pressure and heart rate were evaluated using the direct cannulation method. The effects of the extract on lipid profile as well as kidney and liver functions were studied. Free radical scavenging and antioxidant properties of the extract were evaluated by colorimetric method. The effects of A. floribunda were evaluated after 4 weeks of treatment with alcohol. Results: At the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg/day, A. floribunda significantly decreased the mean blood pressure of AHR by 14.06 and 23.25 % respectively. Administration of the plant extract lead to the reduction of total cholesterol by 41.50% and 43.06%, HDL-cholesterol by 22.16 and 30.15% and artherogenic index by 69.78 and 74.43%, respectively at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg, as compared to untreated hypertensive rats. A. floribunda (200 and 400 mg/kg) decrease bilirubine (12.98 and 16.88%), urea (23.32% and 32.26 %), ALT (10.73 and 27.97%) and AST (29.80 and 42.22%) of treated AHR, respectively. The plant extract also reduced superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase and increased the reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration in aorta, heart, kidney and liver of AHR. Conclusion: These results suggest that the aqueous extract of A. floribunda possesses antioxidant and hypotensive activity in alcohol-induced hypertension

Aims: The aim of the study was to investigate experimentally the antihypertensive effect of Ruta Montana. Background: Ruta montana L. is traditionally used in Moroccan herbal medicine to treat hypertension. This study aimed to evaluate experimentally the hypotensive and vasoactive properties of this plant. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract of Ruta Montana on blood pressure parameters in LNAME-induced hypertensive rats and to determine the vasorelaxant activity of this aqueous extract. Methods: The antihypertensive effect of the aqueous extract obtained from Ruta montana aerial parts (RMAPAE) (200 mg/kg) was evaluated in normal and anesthetized hypertensive rats. Blood pressure parameters (systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean blood pressure (MBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP)) and heart rate were measured using a tail-cuff and a computer-assisted monitoring device. The acute and chronic effect of RMAPAE was recorded during 6 hours for the acute experiment and during 7 days for the sub-chronic test. In the other set, the vasorelaxant effect of RMAPAE on the contractile response was undertaken in isolated thoracic aorta. Results: The results indicated that RMAPAE extract significantly decreased SBP, MBP, DBP and heart rate in L-NAMEinduced hypertensive rats. Furthermore, RMAPAE was demonstrated to induce a dose dependent relaxation in the aorta precontracted with Epinephrine or KCl. More interestingly, this vasorelaxant activity of RMAPAE seems to be probably mediated through the prostaglandins pathway. Conclusion: The present study illustrates the beneficial action of Ruta montana on hypertension and supports then its use as an antihypertensive agent.

Introduction. Honey, propolis and pollen belong to bee products that have beneficial biological properties. These products exhibit e.g. antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. Due to biological activity and natural origin, bee products are used, e.g. in the food industry, cosmetology and pharmacy. Aim. The aim of the study was to compare the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of honey, propolis and pollen from an apiary located in Wielkopolska Province. Material and methods. Honey, propolis and pollen used in this study came from the same apiary located in Wielkopolska Province. The antioxidant potential of bee products was evaluated applying DPPH· free radical scavenging activity assay. The antimicrobial activity of the tested bee products was determined by the point-diffusion method against 13 strains of pathogenic and potentially pathogenic bacteria. In addition, the total content of phenolic compounds in honey, propolis and pollen was determined by the colorimetric method. Results. Propolis exhibited higher antioxidant activity, in comparison to honey and pollen. The antiradical activity of propolis was equal to 80% approx. activity of Trolox, the standard antioxidant. Among tested bee products, propolis was characterized by the highest total phenols content. In addition, honey, propolis and pollen showed antagonistic activity against tested bacterial strains. Conclusions. The obtained results indicate that among the tested bee products of native origin, i.e. honey, propolis and pollen, propolis characterized by the highest antioxidant activity and the total content of phenolic compounds. In addition, all bee products showed bactericidal activity against the tested bacterial strains.

Background: Research on medicinal plant antioxidants has emerged as a potential therapeutic to prevent free radical generated damage in the human body. Hammada elegans Botsch (popularly known as “Ajram”) is a xerophytic plant widely found in Laghouat region, but there are only a few reports about the biological or chemical properties of these species. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the antioxidant and the antihemolytic activities of hexanic, acetonic, methanolic and aqueous extracts of aerial parts of Algerian Hammada elegans Botsch by employing different in vitro assay systems. Methods: The total phenolic content, the flavonoid content and the condensed tannin amount were analyzed using Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminum chloride and vanillin assays, respectively. The in vitro antioxidant capacity of extracts was assessed by CUPRAC, iron chelating, ABTS•+and antihemolytic assays, and was expressed as EC50 values. Results: Among the analyzed extracts, the aqueous extract had the highest phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents. Also, this extract displayed the highest antioxidant capacities compared to the other extracts and standards. Its EC50 value for ABTS radical-scavenging activity was 0.265 ± 0.003 mg/L. Moreover, this extract showed high iron (II) chelating ability (EC50 = 0.958 ± 0.001 mg/L), and good antioxidant activity in the cupric ion reducing activity (CUPRAC) in a concentration dependent manner (EC50 were 0.709 ± 0.002 mg/L). Additionally, this extract had the best antihemolytic activity against AAPH-induced hemolysis (EC50=0.090 ± 0.004 mg/L). Conclusion: Our study revealed that the aqueous extract of Hammada elegans Botsch, is a potential source of antioxidants which possess a high protective effect of membrane against free radical.

The effect of 100 and 50 mg/kg body weight Tribulus terrestris aqueous extract at on the cardiovascular system of rats was studied. Initial heart rate of 160, systolic100 & diastolic 40was considered as normal pressure.. One minute after extract administration the blood pressure and heart rate of rats were raised. The rats' blood pressure continued in a remarkable increasing manner reaching a 180 systolic, 150 diastolic mm/Hg and the heart rate beat were 200, no mortality was observed. Perfusion pressure was raised with the aqueous extract administration then reduced to the normal level after 90 minutes. It was concluded that aqueous extracts of Tribulus terrestris possess significant hypotensive activity in hypertensive rats. The hypotensive effects of Tribulus terrestris appeared may be due to the direct arterial smooth muscle contraction and membrane hypo polarization. These results suggested the curative effect of T. terrestris aqueous extract on hypertensive animals.

Aim: This study investigated the phytochemical constituents and in vitro antioxidant properties of methanol and aqueous leaf extracts of Geophila obvallata using standard methods. Materials and Methods: The in vitro antioxidant assays carried out were 1, 1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability, Nitric oxide (NO•) radical scavenging activity assay, 2, 2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS•+) radical cation scavenging assay, ferric reducing properties and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays. Results: Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, steroids, saponins, terpernoids and cardiac glycosides in both extracts. Relative to the aqueous extract, the methanol extract contained a higher amount of the secondary metabolites. However, both extracts exhibited appreciable and dose-dependent capacities for quenching DPPH, ABTS•+ and NO• free radicals, and potent ferric reducing ability to levels comparable to those of ascorbic acid. The crude methanol extract showed significantly increased (P<0.05) antioxidant activity than the aqueous extract. Conclusion: It was concluded that the extract possesses strong antioxidant properties due to its content of phytochemicals, and provides scientific basis for its ethno medicinal applications.

Background: Pterocarpus santalinoides stem bark is commonly used in Cameroonian medicine to treat many diseases including hypertension. Thus, this study was aimed to evaluate preventive effects of aqueous extract of Pterocarpus santalinoides (AEPS) stem bark on NG-Nitro-L-arginine-methyl ester (LNAME)-induced hypertension in rat. Methods: Normotensive rats received L-NAME (25 mg/kg intraperitoneally) concomitantly with AEPS (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg) or captopril (20 mg/kg) orally during 3 weeks. At the end of experimental period, arterial pressure and heart rate were recorded by invasive method. After sacrifice, blood, aorta and heart were harvested for biochemical analysis on homogenate. Results: Intraperitoneal injection of L-NAME induced in rat a significant increase (p < 0.001; p < 0.01; p < 0.05) of blood pressure, heart rate, malondialdehyde, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, hepatic and renal markers functions. L-NAME also decreased significantly (p < 0.001; p < 0.01; p < 0.05) the levels of HDL-cholesterol, nitrites, glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities as compared to control rats. The AEPS prevented significantly the increase (p < 0.001) of hemodynamic parameters induced by L-NAME and various modifications of biochemical parameters (lipid profile, hepatic and renal markers functions) and oxidative stress markers evaluated. Conclusion: This study shows that the aqueous extract of Pterocarpus santalinoides prevents hypertension, dyslipidemia and oxidative stress induced by L-NAME in rat by attenuating endothelial dysfunction, liver and kidney’s damages

The aim of this work was to produce wonderful cola protein hydrolysate fractions with in vitro antioxidant properties coupled with blood pressure-reducing ability when orally administered to spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Wonderful cola protein isolate (WCI) was hydrolyzed with pancreatin to produce a hydrolysate (WCH), which was subjected to ultrafiltration separation using 1, 3, 5, and 10 kDa molecular weight cut-off membranes to obtain <1, 1–3, 3–5 and 5–10 kDa peptide fractions, respectively. The <1 and 1–3 kDa fractions had higher contents of arginine when compared to the 3–5 and 5–10 kDa peptides. The WCH and <1 kDa peptide fraction had significantly (p < 0.05) better DPPH radical scavenging (55–67%) and metal chelation (83–93%) activities but lower hydroxyl radical scavenging power (10–32%) than the WCI (46, 46 and 63%, respectively). The <1 kDa had significantly (p < 0.05) higher in vitro inhibition (80%) of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity while the 5–10 kDa was the most active inhibitor (90%) of renin activity. All peptide fractions so produced had better systolic and diastolic blood pressure-lowering effects than WCH and WCI. However, the <1 kDa fraction produced significantly (p < 0.05) stronger systolic (−33 mmHg) and diastolic (−30 mmHg) blood pressure reductions 6 h after oral gavage to SHRs. Thus, wonderful cola proteins contain encrypted bioactive peptides that may be used to formulate antioxidant and antihypertensive products.

Piper sarmentosum is a tropical plant in Southeast Asia known for its traditional use in curing various ailments including hypertension. Previous research works have provided evidence for the herb’s antihypertensive property. However, the exact mechanisms involved are still in question. The present study investigated the effects of Piper sarmentosum leaves aqueous extract (PSAE) treatment on vascular endothelin system in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Four groups of SHRs were treated for 28 consecutive days, with negative and positive control groups receiving distilled water and 3 mg/kg perindopril, respectively. Another two groups are the treatment groups, which received PSAE and combination of 1.5 mg/kg perindopril and PSAE. Weekly measurements of blood pressure showed that PSAE significantly reduced the systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressures (P<0.05) of the rats. PSAE also increased mesenteric artery nitric oxide (NO) level (P<0.05) and reduced endothelin-1 (ET-1) level (P<0.05) in the treatment groups. Our results demonstrate that oral administration of PSAE reduced blood pressure in SHRs by reducing the ET-1 level while increasing NO production.

Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao, RPA) has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine formulation to treat hypertension by repression the hyperfunction of liver. However, whether the RPA itself has the antihypertensive effect or not is seldom studied. This study was to evaluate the protective effect of RPA on hypertensive rats. Alcohol in conjunction with a high fat diet- (ACHFD-) induced hypertensive rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) was constantly received either RPA extract (25 or 75 mg/kg) or captopril (15 mg/kg) all along the experiments. As a result, RPA extract (75 mg/kg) could significantly reduce systolic blood pressure of both ACHFD-induced hypertensive rats and SHR after 9-week or 4-week treatment. In ACHFD-induced hypertensive rats, the blood pressure was significantly increased and the lipid profiles in serum including triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol were significantly deteriorated. Also, hepatic damage was manifested by a significant increase in alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) in serum. The RPA extract significantly reversed these parameters, which revealed that it could alleviate the liver damage of rats. In SHR, our result suggested that the antihypertensive active of RPA extract may be related to its effect on regulating serum nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin (ET) levels.
