The purpose of this study was to assess the socioeconomic condition of maize seed and non-seed producers. A field survey was carried out in sixty households of Khanchikot VDC of Arghakhanchi district during May, 2014. The district was major seed producing district and Khanchikot was found better in seed production than other VDC in district. Simple random sampling technique was used to collect data using pre-tested interview schedule. About 57% were seed producer among the sample. The average family size of household was 5. Dependency ratio was less in seed producing households (0.41) than non-seed producers (0.72). Farmers were involved in the production of certified seed and the major (50%) source of foundation seed was National Maize Research Program, Rampur, Chitwan. The external input like chemical fertilizer was used in fewer amounts in the study area. The seed test was done at regional laboratory, Bhairahawa and sold to DADO, Arghakhanchi. Decision on loan taking, business operation and bank account were taken by males whereas cropping pattern, deficit labor use, religious and social works related decision were taken by females in the household. Major problem in maize production were lack of technical assistance followed by inadequate irrigation facilities. Proper training, extension service and government support on inputs would help in better socio-economic condition and production of maize.

The purposive method was used to select five manufacturing companies operating in Oyo State while the simple random sampling technique was used to select fifty respondents for the study. Data collected through structured questionnaire was analysed with the aid of Mean and Regression Analysis. Results of the analysis show that e-marketing has a significant impact on organizational performance measured by effective decision making, customer satisfaction and sakes volume.  The study also confirms that unstable power supply, lack of government support, low level of education of the owners/managers of business organizations and Security of documents through e-commerce are major threats to the success of e-marking adoption. The study concludes that the survival of business organizations, especially in this globally competitive environment, pivots on e-marketing. Subsequently, the study recommends that the government should provide enabling environment for e-commerce to triumph in Nigeria.  Also, management of Nigerian business organizations should establish e-marketing unit, administratively and financially separate and independent from marketing department, and give it a prominent place in the organizational structure, to be able to perform its functions without associating with the marketing management or other administrations in the company.

Society-owned enterprises (BUMR) Food offer partnership patterns with farmers to overcome the classic problems faced by farmers so far, namely the low capital, access to sources of capital, access to technology, and market penetration. The partnership pattern offered by BUMR Food is in the form of non-collateral loan assistance accompanied by assistance and providing agricultural insurance to farmers. Farmers are required to plant rice using varieties determined by the BUMR Food and sell their grain to BUMR Food at a price determined based on the quality of grain produced by farmers. Farmers' decision to establish a partnership with BUMR Food is greatly influenced by their perception of the partnership pattern. The purpose of this study is to: (1) identify the pattern of partnership of paddy rice farmers with BUMR Food, and (2) analyze the perception of paddy rice farmers to the pattern of partnership with BUMR Food. The research method used was a survey, with a population of all paddy rice farmers who followed the pattern of collaboration with the BUMR Food in Sukabumi Regency. The sampling technique used is Simple Random Sampling. The first research objective was analyzed descriptively, while the second research objective was analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test. The results show: (1) The partnership pattern in the form of Agribusiness Operational Cooperation, where the partner company (BUMR Food) provides non-collateral loans, provides technical assistance in cultivation, and acts as an offtaker (receives the results of production), and (2) the perception of farmers lowland rice to the partnership pattern with BUMR Food is generally positive both in terms of relative profitability, suitability and complexity.

AbstractWhere maize plays a critical role in food security, governments and donors have invested heavily in support of local, privately owned, often small and medium sized, maize seed enterprises (maize SMEs). Underpinning these investments are strong assumptions about maize SMEs’ capacity to produce and distribute seed to smallholders. This study assesses the capacities of 22 maize SMEs in Mexico that engaged with MasAgro—a large-scale development program initiated in 2011 that has provided maize SMEs with improved genetic material and technical assistance. Data were collected onsite from in-depth interviews with enterprise owners and managers and complemented with other primary and secondary sources. Overall, maize SMEs showed high levels of absorptive capacity for seed production, but limited signs of learning and innovation in terms of business organization and strategic seed marketing. Asset endowments varied widely among the SMEs, but generally they were lowest among the smaller enterprises, and access to business development services beyond MasAgro was practically nonexistent. Results highlighted the critical role of MasAgro in reinvigorating the portfolios of seeds produced by maize SMEs, as well as the challenges ahead for maize SMEs to scale the new technologies in a competitive market that has long been dominated by multinational seed enterprises. Among these challenges were limited investment in seed marketing, weak infrastructure for seed production, and limited experience in business management. Achieving the food security goals through maize SMEs will require making national maize seed industry development a strategic imperative.

The cereal crop, maize is regarded as staple food mainly in hill areas of Nepal. Seed is one of the vital input which determines the production and yield of any crop. Farmers are found using the required inputs in haphazard way which had increased the cost of production and inefficiency of resources used. The study on seed sector is limited. For such a backdrop, this study was aimed to assess the level of technical efficiency (TE) of certified maize seed production. The total of 164 certified seed producer were interviewed in June, 2016 using simple random sampling technique in Palpa district of Nepal. The result revealed that increase in amount of seed and labor by one percent would increase the yield of certified maize seed by 0.29 and 0.34 percent respectively. The TE was estimated using stochastic production frontier model in Stata software. The average TE was found 70 percent which revealed the scope of increasing TE by 30 percent using the existing available resources. There were about 29 percent farmers who had TE of ≥0.7-0.8 followed by 27.44 percent at ≥0.8-0.9. Government and other stakeholders should prioritize to provide technical knowledge via training and increase the visit of extension worker to increase TE of certified maize seed producer in the district.

Maize constitute dominant food crop in upland semi-arid region of East Nusa Tenggara (ENT) and as a main staple for majority of rural farmers. This paper examines Provincial Government programs to increase maize production and to reform maize production orientation. Data and information being used from the recent program: “Maize Planting, Cattle Harvest (MPCH)”. The survey was conducted in all villages in Districts of Timor and Sumba Island as pilot project. The study showed that: 1). Maize farmers keen to change production orientation from subsistence to semi and fully commercial as long as there are surplus production and better access to the market, 2). Average maize productivity of farmers under program (5 – 8 ton/ha) higher than traditional practices (1 – 2 ton/ha), 3). Most farmers under the program have access to have own cattle 1- 2 head/household from surplus production of maize sold with contract price IDR 3,200/kg. This result implies that incorporated farmer into the market from the beginning of the program, technical assistance to apply appropriate innovations, organized farmers groups to enhance business scale and government support to minimize production cost lead farmers to adopt new innovation, increase maize production and change maize production orientation (commercial).
