Recent cloud bursts and Glacial Lake Outburst Flood ( GLOF ) in the Uttarakhand Himalaya have triggered catastrophic landslides. Heavy monsoon precipitation lashed Uttarakhand causing devastation and series of new landslides in the region. The Surbhi Resort Landslide is located near the hill station of Mussoorie in Garhwal Himalaya, India, in the Upper Krol Limestone. After intense rain in August 1998, the Krol sedimentary deposits suddenly gave way as a deep-seated landslide, blocking the main Mussoorie-Kemptyartery for 15 days. In 2005, the velocity of the slide was determined to be 4–14 mm/year by previous workers, thus it was still active with a modest intensity. Recently in 2018, during monsoon there was heavy rainfall in the Mussoorie and mud flow in the Kemty Fall area. Huge amounts of quaternary debris are still lying on the slope, another high intensity rainfall or cloud burst in future could trigger another large-scale failure. Based on our recent detailed investigations, following mitigation and bioengineering measures are suggested. To lower the ground water table, a series of horizontal drains should be installed at the base of the crown portion of the slide. This would generate an additional discharge which has to be channeled down Rangaon-ka-Khala, the natural channel, down the slope to the Aglar River flowing in the valley below. To prevent further surface erosion, it is suggested that the Rangaon-ka-Khalamust be bioengineered with shrubs and grasses such as Eriophorum comosum, Saccharum spontanum, Pogonatherum spp. And Wood fordia fruticosa while the surrounding slope must be reforested with Quercus leucotrichophora, Alnus napelensis , Pinus spp.and Cedrus spp. Check dams must be constructed on the entire 3.5 km stretch of the Rangaon-ka-khala to lower the velocity of thewater. This could be done either as gabions or in the form of live fascines of Salix tetrasperma or Dalbergia sissoo. The catchmentarea above the Mussoorie-Kempty road can be expected to collect 60,000 m3 in 24 hours in a 25-years reoccurrence cloud burst. Thus proper drains (0.40 m in dia.) on the inside of the road must be installed. The flow velocity at these extreme events would be 4.8 m/switch is slightly above the recommended value. If this water is allowed to flow down the Rangaon-ka-Khala it will most certainly lead to a major debris slide with a vertical velocity of almost 100 m/s with huge erosive power. For this reason, this discharge should be channeled down in plastic or cement lined pipes, preferably to the west of the Siyagaon Village which is reported as stable rather than in the landslide zone itself. It is concluded that these mitigation measures and bioengineering plantation would certainly help stabilize the Surbhi landslide area to prevent further disaster in future that destroyed the water mills, fields of the surrounding villages and mud flow in popular Kempty Fall area. These measures may also be applicable for the other active landslide zones in the NW(Jammu and Kashmir) and NE ( Darjiling-Sikkim ) Himalaya.

<p>Road construction in the Trans-Himalaya is always challenging task because of having fragile and rugged topography with the strong influence of monsoon. Three different road corridors namely Kaligandaki (Pokhara-Jomsoom-Zhongba), Trishuali (Kathamndu-Trishuli-Gyirong) and Bhotekoshi rivers (Kathmandu-Tatopani-Nyalam) cross the Himalaya with different geological discontinuities i.e. South Tibetan Detachment System (STDS), Main Central Thrust (MCT). The Himalayan range is acting a topographic barrier resulting different climate in the southern and northern part. These three roads are very strategic for the connectivity between Trans-Himalaya and midland. People have been living in these valleys for a long time. After the road construction, people have started to build houses along this road. However, people have are often forgetting the influence of these large scale mass movement that occurred in the past. Therefore, an attempt has been done to analyze these past events and their impacts. Preparation of engineering geological map, landslide inventories and investigation of large scale past mass movement have been done in detailed field investigations in 2018 and 2019 supported by remote sensing. Slope stability analysis has been done in different critical sections for the landslide hazard assessment. It is clearly seen that the road passes some of these large scale paleo-landslides and responsible for toe cutting. The road sections are critical in all three roads but more vulnerable in the southern slope of the Himalaya. The road between Beni to Larjung of the Kaligandaki has critical slope and susceptible for landslide occurrences. Therefore, proper mitigation measures have to be implemented for the stabilization of these mountain slope.</p>

Landslides that are the major hazards, are concentrated along the river valley, road cut sections, cultivated lands and geologically adverse areas like fault zones, incompetent lithology, steep slopes and overhanging cliffs. Present study represents a small part of the Mahabharat Range within the Lesser Himalaya, where landslide inventory mapping was carried out in the Ramche-Jharlang area because it consists of numerous small to large landslides affecting ecology and society. The main objectives were to delineate both present and past landslides with their characters (geometry, geology, hydrogeology, slope geometry, triggering causes of landslides and their impacts) focusing on the present propagating trends in terms of its cause. The field investigation was carried out by field work in the landslide occurring areas, visual inspection, satellite image analysis, photographical analysis, interaction and interview with the locals and the affected groups. The study reveals nail scratching outlook in most of the hills. The slope failures were debris flow, debris slide, mud flow and deep-seated creeps. The Ramche landslide in the eastern part to the Jharlan-Chhyamthali in the western part, have been devastating and active now and then causing huge casualties. The utmost reasons for occurring small to large scale landslides are inherently weak geological setting along with some adverse geological structures in addition to the triggering factors like concentrated precipitation and earthquakes. Systematic landslide hazard mapping and mitigation measures based on the cause and consequences during the planning and construction stages of infrastructures are fundamental steps to reduce loss from landslide disaster in the region.

Abstract Vehicles, such as an agricultural tractor, construction vehicle, mobile machinery, and 4-wheel drive vehicle, are often operated on unpaved ground. In many cases, the ground is deformable; therefore, the deformation should be taken into consideration in order to assess the off-the-road performance of a tire. Recent progress in computational mechanics enabled us to simulate the large scale coupling problem, in which the deformation of tire structure and of surrounding medium can be interactively considered. Using this technology, hydroplaning phenomena and tire traction on snow have been predicted. In this paper, the simulation methodology of tire/soil coupling problems is developed for pneumatic tires of arbitrary tread patterns. The Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Finite Volume Method (FVM) are used for structural and for soil-flow analysis, respectively. The soil is modeled as an elastoplastic material with a specified yield criterion and a nonlinear elasticity. The material constants are referred to measurement data, so that the cone penetration resistance and the shear resistance are represented. Finally, the traction force of the tire in a cultivated field is predicted, and a good correlation with experiments is obtained.

Neurodegenerative diseases are etiologically and clinically heterogeneous conditions, often reflecting a spectrum of disease rather than well-defined disorders. The underlying molecular complexity of these diseases has made the discovery and validation of useful biomarkers challenging. The search of characteristic genetic and transcriptomic indicators for preclinical disease diagnosis, prognosis, or subtyping is an area of ongoing effort and interest. The next generation of biomarker studies holds promise by implementing meaningful longitudinal and multi-modal approaches in large scale biobank and healthcare system scale datasets. This work will only be possible in an open science framework. This review summarizes the current state of genetic and transcriptomic biomarkers in Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, providing a comprehensive landscape of recent literature and future directions.

The CERN IT Storage group operates multiple distributed storage systems and is responsible for the support of the infrastructure to accommodate all CERN storage requirements, from the physics data generated by LHC and non-LHC experiments to the personnel users' files. EOS is now the key component of the CERN Storage strategy. It allows to operate at high incoming throughput for experiment data-taking while running concurrent complex production work-loads. This high-performance distributed storage provides now more than 250PB of raw disks and it is the key component behind the success of CERNBox, the CERN cloud synchronisation service which allows syncing and sharing files on all major mobile and desktop platforms to provide offline availability to any data stored in the EOS infrastructure. CERNBox recorded an exponential growth in the last couple of year in terms of files and data stored thanks to its increasing popularity inside CERN users community and thanks to its integration with a multitude of other CERN services (Batch, SWAN, Microsoft Office). In parallel CASTOR is being simplified and transitioning from an HSM into an archival system, focusing mainly in the long-term data recording of the primary data from the detectors, preparing the road to the next-generation tape archival system, CTA. The storage services at CERN cover as well the needs of the rest of our community: Ceph as data back-end for the CERN OpenStack infrastructure, NFS services and S3 functionality; AFS for legacy home directory filesystem services and its ongoing phase-out and CVMFS for software distribution. In this paper we will summarise our experience in supporting all our distributed storage system and the ongoing work in evolving our infrastructure, testing very-dense storage building block (nodes with more than 1PB of raw space) for the challenges waiting ahead.

The road-network matching method is an effective tool for map integration, fusion, and update. Due to the complexity of road networks in the real world, matching methods often contain a series of complicated processes to identify homonymous roads and deal with their intricate relationship. However, traditional road-network matching algorithms, which are mainly central processing unit (CPU)-based approaches, may have performance bottleneck problems when facing big data. We developed a particle-swarm optimization (PSO)-based parallel road-network matching method on graphics-processing unit (GPU). Based on the characteristics of the two main stages (similarity computation and matching-relationship identification), data-partition and task-partition strategies were utilized, respectively, to fully use GPU threads. Experiments were conducted on datasets with 14 different scales. Results indicate that the parallel PSO-based matching algorithm (PSOM) could correctly identify most matching relationships with an average accuracy of 84.44%, which was at the same level as the accuracy of a benchmark—the probability-relaxation-matching (PRM) method. The PSOM approach significantly reduced the road-network matching time in dealing with large amounts of data in comparison with the PRM method. This paper provides a common parallel algorithm framework for road-network matching algorithms and contributes to integration and update of large-scale road-networks.

BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic is the first pandemic where social media platforms relayed information on a large scale, enabling an “infodemic” of conflicting information which undermined the global response to the pandemic. Understanding how the information circulated and evolved on social media platforms is essential for planning future public health campaigns. OBJECTIVE This study investigated what types of themes about COVID-19 were most viewed on YouTube during the first 8 months of the pandemic, and how COVID-19 themes progressed over this period. METHODS We analyzed top-viewed YouTube COVID-19 related videos in English from from December 1, 2019 to August 16, 2020 with an open inductive content analysis. We coded 536 videos associated with 1.1 billion views across the study period. East Asian countries were the first to report the virus, while most of the top-viewed videos in English were from the US. Videos from straight news outlets dominated the top-viewed videos throughout the outbreak, and public health authorities contributed the fewest. Although straight news was the dominant COVID-19 video source with various types of themes, its viewership per video was similar to that for entertainment news and YouTubers after March. RESULTS We found, first, that collective public attention to the COVID-19 pandemic on YouTube peaked around March 2020, before the outbreak peaked, and flattened afterwards despite a spike in worldwide cases. Second, more videos focused on prevention early on, but videos with political themes increased through time. Third, regarding prevention and control measures, masking received much less attention than lockdown and social distancing in the study period. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that a transition of focus from science to politics on social media intensified the COVID-19 infodemic and may have weakened mitigation measures during the first waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is recommended that authorities should consider co-operating with reputable social media influencers to promote health campaigns and improve health literacy. In addition, given high levels of globalization of social platforms and polarization of users, tailoring communication towards different digital communities is likely to be essential.

Urban traffic flow forecasting is a critical issue in intelligent transportation systems. Due to the complexity and uncertainty of urban road conditions, how to capture the dynamic spatiotemporal correlation and make accurate predictions is very challenging. In most of existing works, urban road network is often modeled as a fixed graph based on local proximity. However, such modeling is not sufficient to describe the dynamics of the road network and capture the global contextual information. In this paper, we consider constructing the road network as a dynamic weighted graph through attention mechanism. Furthermore, we propose to seek both spatial neighbors and semantic neighbors to make more connections between road nodes. We propose a novel Spatiotemporal Adaptive Gated Graph Convolution Network ( STAG-GCN ) to predict traffic conditions for several time steps ahead. STAG-GCN mainly consists of two major components: (1) multivariate self-attention Temporal Convolution Network ( TCN ) is utilized to capture local and long-range temporal dependencies across recent, daily-periodic and weekly-periodic observations; (2) mix-hop AG-GCN extracts selective spatial and semantic dependencies within multi-layer stacking through adaptive graph gating mechanism and mix-hop propagation mechanism. The output of different components are weighted fused to generate the final prediction results. Extensive experiments on two real-world large scale urban traffic dataset have verified the effectiveness, and the multi-step forecasting performance of our proposed models outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines.

<p>After a heavy rainfall event on August 31<sup>st</sup>, 2019, a debris flow at the Dawinbach in the municipality of Strengen (Tyrol, Austria) caused a blockage of the culvert below the provincial road B-316 and deposition in the residential area. The debris deposition raised up to 2 to 3 meters on the road and led to property damage to real estate. The total volume of the debris flow was approximately 15 000 cubic meters.</p><p>In order to control a further debris flow of this magnitude, the Austrian Service of Torrent and Avalanche Control started to construct mitigation measures. They include a channel relocation in order to significantly increase the channel crosssection. Hence the construction company STRABAG is also relocating the provincial road bridge.</p><p>Since the risk for this road section and for the workers on site is particularly high during the construction period, a combined monitoring and early warning concept was developed and implemented by the BOKU, Vienna and the company IBTP Koschuch.</p><p>The monitoring site consisting of a pulse compression radar and a pull rope system was installed 800m upstream from the fan. The combination of the two sensors now results in three major advantages.</p><ul><li>At sensor level, the system operates redundantly.</li> <li>A more reliable differentiation between increased discharge or debris flow is given.</li> <li>In the event of a false alarm, the system provides easier diagnosis and assignment of the fault.</li> </ul><p>Two events of increased runoff occurred during the deployment period. Both were successfully detected by the pulse compression radar. Here, the first event was used for threshold validation of the radar unit. Thus, an alarm could already be sent out automatically for the second one. The road is controlled by an integrated light signal system consisting of three traffic lights. A siren near the construction site can warn workers of an impending event by means of an acoustic signal. The reaction time after the alarm has been triggered is between 75 and 150 seconds, depending on the speed of the debris flow. The responsible authorities are informed by sending an SMS chain, which includes details about the type of process and the type of the activated triggering system.</p>
