Speaking is the first way to interact with others in the social community. Furthermore, the success in learning a language at first can be seen from the ability of the learner’s speaking. However, it is very hard for the second language learners to speak the foreign language, especially English. There are a lot of reasons why they get difficulties in speaking, such as lack of ideas to tell, lack of vocabularies to express the ideas, lack of the exposure to speak, and lack of the interesting teaching method or technique that can motivate them to speak. Thus, this research applied Cooperative Storytelling Strategy to Improve Students' Speaking proficiency of the students of grade 11in Nepal Rastriya Chandraganga Secondary School, Gagretal, Surkhet. This research was a collaborative classroom action research whose main purpose was to know whether or not storytelling strategy could improve the students’ speaking skill. Meanwhile, the specific purposes consisted of describing: (1) To implement storytelling strategy in 11th graders students at our School to improve their speaking skill. (2)To enhance their confidence in speaking skill and create fluency in speaking. The data of this research were got from the observations done by Story telling contest and Speaking test. The result showed that there was an improvement on students’ speaking proficiency after the implementation of storytelling strategy. The speaking test result in cycle two explained that the students’ speaking aspects got good progress. Storytelling improved their comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Thus, it can be said that storytelling strategy could improve students’ speaking skill.Journal of NELTA Surkhet,  Vol. 5 January, 2018, Page: 97-105

This study aims to investigate how cartoon film based-discussion can improve students’ speaking. This Classroom Action Research was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Jember. The subjects of the study were 22 female and 10 male students. The data were collected through English speaking test. From the test result, cartoon film based-discussion was very effective; there was a significant increase in student’s speaking skill (M=76.09 in Cycle 1 to M=77.28 in Cycle 2) and students’ active participation (76.56% - 79.68%). This leads to conclusion that cartoon film based-discussion can improve students’ speaking and active participation by three main factors; First, they can discuss about particular topics in the discussion before taking the Speaking test. Second, cartoon film succeeds to stimulate students’ mind in collecting vocabularies during watching. Third, students’ grammar and pronunciation are also increased because they are accustomed to the structure of English subtitle provided in the movie.

Endogenous Rural Development is an application concept of Endogenous Regional Development in rural scale. This study portrays the progress of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta in supporting endogenous rural development in Karangdukuh Village, Jogonalan District, Klaten Regency. Continuing the progress of UIN Sunan Kalijaga 2017, this article empowers a peasant community named Sentra Peternakan Rakyat (SPR) in Kebon Wulang Reh, in Karangdukuh Village. This study was first elaborated through two FGD processes. The FGD process is the first step to understanding the expectations and mapping of SPR needs. After conducting the Particypatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) survey, the study in this article was carried out in 3 concrete actions, namely the development of ‘Cakruk Pintar’ at the SPR location, Health Promotion and Trial Learning in ‘Cakruk Pintar’. These three main variables are people’s livestock, public health, and community learning habitus. The results of the development of 'endogenous' village development in the community service process have an elaborative and collaborative spirit. The collaboration aspect is the entrance to invite practitioners so that they can generate positive reactions from the social community. Meanwhile, elaborative aspects can give birth to new dissemination from all stakeholders, partners and policy makers. Where this Participatory Action Research (PAR) village development process can succeed if there is academic sustainability, both programs can be continued or stopped.[Pembangunan Pedesaan Endogen (Endogenous Rural Development) merupakan konsep penerapan dari Pembangunan Regional Endogenus dalam skala pedesaan.

English speaking proficiency requires more than knowing its grammatical and semantic rules.  It also includes the knowledge of how native speakers of one language use the language in the context of structures of interpersonal exchange in which many factors interact.  In this study, autonomy was implemented by journal or diary writing, sharing and discussing journals, sharing feedback on journals, reflection, promoting dictionary use, introducing useful internet websites, forming yahoo groups, sharing valuable links, creating online self-access center, watching preferable movies, and goal setting.  The present quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the impact of teaching autonomy on the speaking skill of Iranian EFL learners.  To this end, 44 male and female intermediate students at Respina Talk (i.e., Iran-Canada) language school with the age range of 20-35 were selected in order to achieve the objectives of the study.  According to the obtained results, there was a significant relationship between teaching autonomy and EFL learners’ speaking skill.  The findings of this study may have some theoretical and practical implications for material developers, EFL teachers, language learners, etc.

In recent years, the setting of standards or benchmarks for teachers as well as for learners has been brought into education as one of the key mechanisms for accountability and quality assurance. Language standards setting is one of the top priorities for policy makers. This paper points out that while standards setting in education raises issues that are largely educational and philosophical, language standards setting is often culturally and politically charged. This is particularly so in English standards setting because of the long-standing association between English and colonialism and cultural and economic domination. The domination of English has not diminished in the post-colonial era. The paper outlines a number of complex issues generated by English standard setting, including whether native or non-native varieties of English will be used as the model for determining standards, whether the same standards should be used for first and second language learners, how one determines whether deviations from the standard English model are errors or variations, and the social and political implications for adopting the standard or the local varieties. A brief summary of how each paper in this Special Issue addresses these issues is provided.
