Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease responsible for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is a resurgent disease in the developed world. The World Health Organization estimates that one third of the world’s population is currently infected, with 9 million new cases occurring annually, leading to 3 million deaths per year (WHO Report, 2007). The disease affects the ocular anterior segment, the posterior segment, and adnexa. The purpose of this review is to describe the ocular manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and to emphasize the fact that ocular tuberculosis may occur in the absence of systemic clinical activity and may mimic several clinical entities. Various studies have shown a clinical significance of purified protein derivative test results and computerized tomography of the chest while, molecular diagnostic procedures have provided a new approach to establishing the diagnosis of ocular tuberculosis. The current review focuses on the diagnostic modalities, various clinical features, and treatments for management of intraocular tuberculosis recommended in recent publications. It is an update on the manifestations and management of ocular tuberculosis. RESUMO Estratégia usada internacionalmente a busca ativa de sintomáticos respiratórios permite identificar precocemente pessoas com tosse por tempo igual ou superior a três semanas consideradas com suspeita de tuberculose pulmonar visando à descoberta dos casos bacilíferos. É uma atividade de saúde pública e deve ser realizada por todos os serviços de saúde de forma permanente. Com o objetivo de identificar os casos, interromper a cadeia de transmissão e reduzir a incidência da doença a longo prazo.  Objetivo: Conhecer os números de casos notificados de tuberculose e realizar um comparativo com os indicadores de sintomático respiratório no município de Palmas/TO entre os anos de 2015 e 2016. Método: O estudo é do tipo descritivo, de corte transversal e documental direta. Conclusão: Verifica-se que o número confirmado de TB da pesquisa do SR tanto para o ano de 2015 quanto para o ano de 2016 está muito aquém dos casos novos notificados, foi possível perceber a descontinuidade dos pacientes que são encaminhados para avaliação e que não há segmentos principalmente em relação ao resultado dos exames.   Palavras-chave: Tuberculose. ABSTRACT A strategy used internationally for the active search of respiratory symptomatic patients allows early identification of people with cough for a time equal to or greater than three weeks considered with suspicion of pulmonary tuberculosis in order to discover the bacilliferous cases. It is a public health activity and must be performed by all health services on an ongoing basis. In order to identify the cases, interrupt the transmission chain and reduce the incidence of the disease in the long term. Objective: To know the numbers of reported cases of tuberculosis and to carry out a comparison with the indicators of respiratory symptomatology in the municipality of Palmas / TO between the years 2015 and 2016. Method: The study is descriptive, cross-sectional and direct documentary. Conclusion: It is verified that the confirmed number of TB of the RS research for both the year 2015 and the year 2016 is well below the new cases reported, it was possible to perceive the discontinuity of the patients that are referred for evaluation and which are not mainly related to the results of the exams. Abstract Context.—Improved screening techniques for lung cancer have resulted in detection of lesions that are considered to represent precursors of invasive lung carcinomas. These lesions may cause a diagnostic dilemma particularly on small biopsy or cytology specimens. Ancillary studies are usually not helpful, and diagnosis is based on morphology alone. Recognition of these lesions is very important to prevent potential diagnostic mistakes that may result in inadequate patient management. Future molecular studies may provide clinically useful diagnostic and prognostic gene markers. Objective.—To review currently proposed morphologic criteria for precursor lesions of non–small cell lung carcinomas including squamous dysplasias, atypical adenomatous hyperplasia, and diffuse idiopathic neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia. Major molecular abnormalities are briefly discussed. Data Sources.—Published literature and recent World Health Organization classification of lung tumors. Conclusions.—Practicing surgical pathologists must be familiar with morphology of recognized pulmonary preneoplastic lesions that are more frequently detected radiographically and subjected to diagnostic procedures. Future understanding of underlying molecular abnormalities associated with progression of these lesions into invasive lung carcinoma may result in a development of molecular assays with potential diagnostic and prognostic importance.

In Latin America, onchocerciasis is targeted for elimination by 2012 through twice-yearly mass treatment of the eligible population with ivermectin. In Guatemala, two of the four historical endemic foci have demonstrated elimination of transmission, following World Health Organization guidelines. Using established guidelines ophthalmological, serological, and entomological evaluations were conducted in 2007-8 to determine the transmission status of onchocerciasis in the Huehuetenango focus. The prevalence ofOnchocerca volvulusmicrofilariae in the anterior segment of the eye in 365 residents was 0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0–0.8%), the prevalence of infection ofO. volvulusinSimulium ochraceumamong 8252 flies collected between November 2007 and April 2008 was 0% (95% CI 0–0.02%), and the prevalence of antibodies to a recombinantO. volvulusantigen in 3118 school age children was 0% (95% CI 0–0.1%). These results showed transmission interruption; thus, in 2009 mass treatment was halted and posttreatment surveillance began. To verify for potential recrudescence an entomological evaluation (from December 2010 to April 2011) was conducted during the 2nd and 3rd year of posttreatment surveillance. A total of 4587S. ochraceumwere collected, and the prevalence of infection ofO. volvuluswas 0% (95% CI 0–0.04%). Transmission of onchocerciasis in the Huehuetenango focus has been eliminated.

Abstract Different countries have adopted strategies for the early detection of SARS-CoV-2 since the declaration of community transmission by the World Health Organization (WHO) and timely diagnosis has been considered one of the major obstacles for surveillance and healthcare. Here, we report the increase of the number of laboratories to COVID-19 diagnosis in Brazil. Our results demonstrate an increase and decentralisation of certified laboratories, which does not match the much higher increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. Also, it becomes clear that laboratories are irregularly distributed over the country, with a concentration in the most developed state, São Paulo.

Latar belakang: SARS COV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2) merupakan virus penyebab COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disesease-2019) yang pertama kali muncul di Kota Wuhan, Provinsi Hubei, Cina pada akhir Desember 2019. Sejak kemunculannya, SARS COV-2 menunjukkan penambahan jumlah pasien dan kematian yang pesat hingga lintas negara sehingga pada tanggal 11 Maret 2020, WHO (World Health Organization) mengumumkan bahwa COVID-19 dinyatakan sebagai global pandemi. Manifestasi COVID-19 dilaporkan sangat bervariasi, mulai dari gangguan sistem pernafasan, pencernaan, bahkan okular. Namun karena kelangkaan kasus dan situasi pandemi sehingga literatur mengenai manifestasinya pada mata sangat terbatas. Tujuan: Artikel ini akan menelaah manifestasi klinis SARS-COV-2 pada mata, hubungannya dengan manifestasi sistemik, peran pemeriksaan PCR swab konjungtiva, dan terapi yang diberikan melalui review kualitatif sesuai dengan rekomendasi PRISMA. Diskusi dan pembahasan masalah: Terdapat 12 dokumen yang ditelaah dalam review ini. Selain gejala pernafasan, COVID-19 juga dilaporkan dapat menyebabkan konjungtivitis dengan ciri umum seperti mata merah, kemosis konjungtiva, mata berair maupun manifestasi okular lain yang lebih jarang. Manifestasi okular dapat sebagai gejala tunggal, prodromal, maupun bersamaan dengan manifestasi sistemik, dan bisa menyebabkan gejala sisa berupa floaters. Terapinya pun bervariasi berdasarkan gejala. Pada kasus COVID-19 dengan konjungtivitis hasil pemeriksaan PCR swab konjungtiva bisa positif maupun negatif. Kesimpulan: Dapat disimpulkan bahwa manifestasi okular pada pasien COVID-19 mungkin saja terjadi, dan hubungannya dengan manifestasi sistemik sangat bervariasi. Untuk terapi perlu dilakukan penelitian lebih lanjut, dan banyak faktor yang menyebabkan hasil PCR swab konjungtiva tidak sesuai dengan klinis pasien. Sehingga diharapkan agar setiap tenaga kesehatan untuk selalu waspada dan mengambil tindakan pencegahan yang memadai terlepas dari ada atau tidaknya manifestasi okular. Since its emergence, SARS COV-2 showed a rapid enhancement in the number of patients and death cases across countries, because of that, on March 11th, 2020, WHO (World Health Organization) announced that COVID-19 was declared as a global pandemic. The manifestations of COVID-19 were reported to be very varied, ranging from disorders of the respiratory, digestive, and even ocular system. However, due to the scarcity of cases and pandemic situations, the literature of its manifestations in the eyes is very limited. Objective: This article will review the clinical manifestations of SARS-COV-2 in the eye, their relationship to systemic manifestations, the PCR examination of conjunctival swab’s roles, and therapy provided through qualitative reviews according to PRISMA recommendations. Discussion: There were 12 documents reviewed in this study. In addition to respiratory symptoms, COVID-19 was also reported to cause conjunctivitis with common features such as red eye, conjunctival chemosis, watery discharge or other ocular manifestations that were less common. Ocular manifestations could be a single symptom, prodromal, or concurrent with systemic manifestations, and could cause sequelae in the form of floaters. Its treatment also varied based on symptoms. In the case of COVID-19 with conjunctivitis the results of conjunctival swab PCR examination could be positive or negative. Conclusion: It can be concluded that ocular manifestations in COVID-19 patients may occur, and their relationship with systemic manifestations is varies. For therapy, further research is needed, and many factors cause the conjunctival swab PCR results to be incompatible with the patient's clinical course. We hope that every health worker must be aware and take precautions regardless of the presence or absence of ocular manifestations. In the past 50 years, classification systems for renal neoplasms have become increasingly complex as distinctive morphologic patterns in renal neoplasms have been recognized and correlated with clinical findings. In addition to classic histopatology, more sophisticated diagnostic tools, including electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostic techniques have greatly influenced distinctions between various types of renal neoplasms. The current World Health Organization classification of renal neoplasms encompasses nearly 50 distinctive renal neoplasms categorized as malignant or benign tumours. These categories have been expanded during recent years to incorporate newer histotypes, thus suggesting that the next revision of this classification will incorporate some recently recognized entities. In this chapter, we examine clinicopathologic and genetic features of the renal tumours most often seen in clinical practice.


The World Health Organization (W.H.O.), since its inception in 1947, has given close attention to influenza. In its early years W.H.O. laid the foundations of its present network of over 100 national influenza centres and collaborating laboratories which today constitute the backbone of its influenza activities. The activities of the network include the isolation and characterization of influenza strains and the early notification of any changes in surface antigens, the preparation of reference reagents, standardization of diagnostic procedures, formulation of requirements for vaccines, training, and collaboration in research. The efficacy of the network has been proved in the 1957, 1968 and 1977 epidemics. Collaborative research organized by W.H.O. has made important contributions to our understanding of the epidemiology of influenza, including the possible role of lower animals as the origin of some pandemic strains. The latter subject is briefly discussed.

One hundred and thirty-seven cases of Stage III lung cancer established by mediastinoscopy have been followed to determine their survival. The tissue was classified according to World Health Organization schema and the degree of dedifferentiation graded from well to poorly differentiated. Two percent of the presented cases are well-differentiated tumors; the remaining 98% are moderately well-differentiated (11%), or poorly differentiated or small cell tumors (87%). The degree of anaplasia suggests an increasingly aggressive metastatic behavior pattern. The average life span is approximately 5 1/2 months in all groups and subgroups which were studied. Recommendations are presented for the utilization of mediastinoscopy in Stage I and II cases. Further considerations are suggested for priority of diagnostic procedures in establishing the diagnosis of lung cancer.

Background: Diagnostic development for outbreak pathogens has typically followed a disease-specific reactive rather than proactive response. Given the diversity of outbreak pathogens, particularly those prioritised by the World Health Organization Research and Development Blueprint, a more flexible and proactive approach to epidemic preparedness is needed to expand access to critical molecular diagnostic tests in peripheral and resource-constrained deployment settings.Objective: New and more sustainable directives are needed to spur the development of high-quality products, particularly for epidemics more often found in low- and middle-income countries. To leverage and de-risk the development process, we present the benefits and challenges of an open-source business model for co-development of molecular diagnostic tests for decentralised settings.Methods: We identify key outbreak pathogens that are available only for testing in high infrastructure laboratories and compare in-country installed base platforms that could be leveraged for menu expansion. Key strengths and challenges for development are highlighted for both platform and assay developers, with discussion of how to leverage and de-risk the process through an open-source development model.Results: Depending on the specific partner strengths, options for partnership roles are presented. The proposed open-source business model addresses the particular challenges in the detection of outbreak- and epidemic-prone pathogens in low- and middle-income countries, reduces development and deployment risks to support outbreak response, strengthens diagnostic capacity and creates a viable market for product developers.Conclusion: We hope this model for a collaborative and open-source approach for molecular diagnostics serves to encourage stakeholders to consider co-development partnerships to improve outbreak preparedness and epidemic/pandemic response.

The end of 2019 in China was marked by the breakout of the new Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Gradually, the infection spread around the world and in March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Covid-19 a pandemic. The new coronavirus disease 2019 is highly contagious, causing respiratory distress syndrome and poses a huge threat to public health, especially in patients. with serious concomitant diseases such as diabetes mellitus, bronchial asthma, hypertension, etc. Many scientists have put forward the idea that COVID-19 can be transmitted through the eyes through contact and everyday life. Over the past six months, works on the ocular manifestations of coronavirus infection have begun to appear in the literature. We conducted a systematic review of scientific articles from the PubMed, e-Library, Scopus databases in order to conduct a meta-analysis of the effect of coronavirus infection on the eyes and its ophthalmological manifestations.
