Education around the world has been negatively affected by the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Many institutions had to transition to distance learning in compliance with the enforced safety measures. Distance learning might work well for settings with stable internet connections, professional technical teams, and basic implementation of technology in education. In contrast, distance learning faces serious challenges in less fortunate settings with inferior infrastructure. This report aims to shed light on the immediate action steps taken at a leading pharmacy school in Iraq to accommodate for the enforced changes in pharmacy education. The University of Baghdad College of Pharmacy went from less than minimal technology implementation to full distance learning in a remarkable time frame. Pharmacy students were able to finish academic year requirements and move on with the program. Final year students will graduate on time as competent pharmacists.

The article analyzes the experience of tutoring teachers teaching foreign students in the distance learning mode. It is also about the interaction of a teacher and a student throughout the whole academic year, as well as the importance of all elements of systematic work in teaching Russian as a foreign language from scratch. A team of tutors was organized at the faculty, whose mission was to contact their wards within the framework of distance learning: from their connection to the educational platform of the university to organizing their admission to Russian universities. Purpose of the study: consider the role of a tutoring teacher in the system of teaching Russian as a foreign language in a distance mode. The main methods of work are the methods of observation and description of the features of the pedagogical process. The forecasting method is also used to model the future educational mode of foreign students. The survey method is applied, which allows to get “feedback” from the respondents. The quantitative technique allowed us to analyze the number of responses as a percentage. The changes taking place in the world have given a powerful impetus to the improvement of digital educational resources. Teachers were able to mobilize and conduct their own experiment, while adhering to the new standards of distance learning. An attempt is made in the work to comprehensively analyze the introduced system of tutoring and summarize its first results.

The materials of this publication analyze the problem of development, characteristics and implementation of an important condition for the organization of the educational process at the university with the use of distance learning technologies, associated with the creation of a high-quality digital educational environment, the development of technical infrastructure and advanced training of university teachers in order to effectively use distance learning technologies in the processes of digital transformation of higher education. And a certain condition is analyzed not only from the perspective of improving the efficiency of the organization of the process under study, but the operations of the University that meets the requirements of world standards, which is extremely important in the format of the State program of the Russian Federation “Development of education” for 2018–2025. The results of study of the levels of effectiveness of the implementation of the conditions are tested and and the data of the questionnaire survey of students and teachers are provided. The article describes the terms “distant education” and “distant learning”. The synonymy of their meanings and the peculiarities of their use in the context of the characteristics of a special way of implementing the educational process at the university are noted. The features of the implementation of the selected condition that took place in 2020 are noted: flexibility in taking into account the time frame of classes and in choosing an individual pace of training; modularity; the use of various types of communication; wide coverage of the audience of students.

Within students’ attrition studies, it is necessary to assess the longitudinal evolution of students within a given course of study, from enrolment to exit from the university through degree completion and academic dropout. Here, the student's academic progress is monitored through the number of courses failed each semester enrolled. The students’ failure rate and academic behavior typically provide significant insight into students’ exit outcomes from University programs. These programs usually have a maximum time frame required to complete the course. A likelihood-based approach is discussed that conditions on the exit outcome and random effects in adjusting within-subject correlation of longitudinal measurements. Ignoring the number of courses enrolled by a student may produce inadequate results on the actual failure rates. Conditioned on the exit outcomes of the student, we find out that factors such as financial aid, matriculation points, students’ race and course type registered, and gender are distinguishing factors that affect students’ academic performances, for completers and dropouts. Also, being in university-type accommodation (that often have added services such as transportation and internet connections) does not seem to significantly affect the failure rate within both groups of students. In addition, an increase in matriculation points significantly reduces the failure rate independent of the Quintile school of the student. Several count models such as mixed Poisson, mixed Zero Inflation Poisson, mixed Negative Binomial, and mixed Hurdle Poisson models are fitted and compared. In particular, the mixed Poisson model provides a better fit based on the Bayesian Information Criterion and residues analysis.

The coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic has prompted all universities to completely change their teaching in a very rapid way around the world. In France, most of the university courses for the year 2020 had to be delivered at distance. This can be an opportunity for some to rethink the place and the form of distance learning (DL). We present here the feedback of students about DL, who answered a questionnaire about classes they followed between October and December 2020. In addition, we evaluated the use and utility of an audience response system promoting interaction. Our results showed that overall the organization and internet connections allowed DL to run smoothly. Interestingly, all students were in favor of the development of a mixed solution, with distant lectures and face-to-face practical lessons. Finally, the use of interactive software such as Wooclap® has proven to be easy to use and to develop for all lessons.

Discussion and writing are very powerful ways to support learning. This article describes the use of a free, asynchronous online forum to expand student-teacher discussions beyond the time/place constraints of the physical physiology classroom. The main participants were medical students enrolled in physiology class at the University of Zagreb Medical School and their teachers. The assessment data were collected by the electronic administration of the software, by anonymous paper questionnaires, and by the results of the final examination in physiology. During one academic year, 25% ( n = 55) of 220 students enrolled in a traditional physiology course participated in online discussions. Physiology teachers and other faculty also joined the forum. All forum members ( n = 99) posted 395 messages. Nine documents were published by six students who participated in two online collaborative projects. The difference in the mean grade of the final examination in physiology between student members and nonmembers was statistically significant ( P = 0.0328, t = 2.1526). Students who participated in Web discussions were self-selected. Likely, they are the most motivated students, who would perform better on the final examination with or without this resource. Nevertheless, using an online forum could be very successful in teaching critical thinking in physiology because the Internet removes traditional time/place barriers. However, new barriers related to technology and behavioral changes are created. For most teachers and students, the main obstacles to information technology implementation are lack of motivation and lack of professional incentives. To overcome these barriers, institutional support is needed for both students and teachers.

The focus of this research is education during the coronavirus pandemic in Southeastern European countries (Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia). It encompasses elementary education, high schools and higher education. The aim of the research is multiple. With it, we want to present methods of distance learning during the pandemics in the above mentioned countries, challenges and advantages that have emerged, as well as potential solutions for removing faults. This is primarily qualitative research relying on several methods. We conducted interviews to understand the experiences of different stakeholders participating in the education process. This research also relies on quantitative data, i.e. researches doing by The University of Prishtina, Pedagogical Institute of Kosovo, as well as results of opinion polls and research conducted by Student Parliament and Senate of the University of Sarajevo. Their research was conducted throughout the academic year 2020/2021. Also, we compiled different texts from media, as well as statements from different stakeholders. Our method is primarily inductive – because in some cases general ideas and conclusions about distance learning in Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina are based on different individual examples. Information in this research in relation to the section on North Macedonia is mainly based on three sources: Data from the website of Ministry for Education and Science of the Republic of North Macedonia; Morphosis Foundation Survey from September 2020 entitled Status and Challenges for Managing Online Teaching in Primary School; and Findings from the research with directors, teachers, and parents: Experience and Attitudes about Distance Learning, a document prepared by Reactor. Our key conclusion is that Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia were not an exception regarding to the problems that arose during the pandemic in terms of education, such as online teaching, adapting students to new learning conditions, training of teachers for teaching in extraordinary and new circumstances, assessment criteria, etc. However, the situation has also brought opportunities to re-think existing education models and to find new solutions at schools and universities.

The emergence of technology has made it possible for counsellors all over the world to reach their clients in distant locations without compromising the principle of confidentiality. This study examined the availability and utilization of e-counselling platforms in counselling students for quality distance learning in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). Through purposive research design using 56 professional counsellors in the university, five research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Data collection was through a self-structured questionnaire that sought information from the respondents on the availability, utilization, challenges and possible solutions to e-counselling platforms in NOUN. Both descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used to analyse the data using the SPSS platform. The results of the study showed that most of the modern social media platforms for e-counselling are not available for use in the university. In effect, there are challenges that face the utilization of e-counselling platforms, which include inadequate power supply and lack of ICT facilities. The study recommended the provision of alternative power supply, free data for students and counsellors as well as computerized counselling laboratories with internet connections for students and counsellors in all the study centres of the university. Keywords: availability; utilization; e-counselling; distance learning.

The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to national lockdowns in multiple states. The education system, including pharmacy education, has been negatively affected by the subsequent closure of universities. Many institutions have resorted to virtual learning, which work best in settings with fast, stable internet connections and where electricity is readily available. In resource-limited settings, popular virtual interaction platforms like Zoom may not work, and educators have to devise novel ways to continue teaching. The University of Zimbabwe used innovative mobile phone-based processes to ensure continuation of the final-year pharmacy students’ honours research projects, supervision, and timely submission. This facilitated rapid communication between students and professors and allowed effective guidance for the students’ research process. All students completed their projects; 13 out of 16 submitted their write-ups within the deadline; all students passed, 69% scored an upper second (2.1) grade or better, indicating the high quality of the majority of the research projects.

After the declared state of emergency in Bulgaria and in the world due to the Covid19 pandemic, the last two months of the summer semester of the 2019/2020 academic year, the students from NSA “Vassil Levski” and VTU “St. Cyril and St. Methodius” continued their education in remote form in the learning platforms of the two universities, where adapted teaching materials were provided. The aim of the study is to study and compare the opinion of students from NSA and VTU regarding distance learning in basketball at both universities. Research methodology: in the platforms for distance learning the students from NSA and VTU were provided with a questionnaire of 12 questions. The questionnaire is anonymous and was filled in at will by 197 students (106 students from NSA, studying for a bachelor‘s degree and 91 students from VTU, studying for a master‘s degree). To achieve the set goal and tasks of the research, the following methods have been applied: a review study of the specialized literature and a survey. Statistical methods: the results were processed with SPSS 23, using frequency analysis by one-dimensional and two-dimensional frequency distribution, and comparison of the distribution of signs with Pearson‘s χ 2 criterion. Results: The answers of the students in the survey show that everyone regularly enters the platforms, as this is 80.2% of VTU and 78.3% of NSA. Students from both universities find their way easily with the materials in the platforms, 90.1% of VTU and 70.8% of NSA approve the way the teaching materials are presented. 72.6% of NSA and 67% of VTU share that they prefer basketball classes to be held in the hall. With regard to the university factor, statistically significant differences were observed in the answers to nine questions. With regard to the gender factor, statistically significant differences were observed in only two responses. Conclusion: students from both universities prefer basketball classes to be held in a gym, but they want the training to continue in the distance learning platform. The asynchronous form of distance learning is unacceptable for students (60.4% of NSA and 70.1% of VTU).
