The crisis caused by the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has hit the corporate sector from an economic point of view particularly hard. The forced closure of operations led to a dramatic drop in sales and disruption of normal cash flow. In this regard, SMEs have been affected the most. Because of their economic and social importance for the economies, governments have taken many measures to help them. This article aims to evaluate the impacts of the coronavirus crisis on small and medium-sized enterprises in the Slovak Republic. For this purpose, we surveyed 139 SMEs up to the end of 2020. The results of the survey show that the existing help from the state has not compensated for the loss of sales and losses that entrepreneurs have had to deal with. The negative impact of the measures related to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic was felt by up to 96% of the addressed SMEs. The article also includes proposals from interviewed SMEs regarding business support measures. In this regard, it is necessary to focus especially on eliminating the technical and procedural shortcomings of the measures.

Eutrophication is one of the consequences of the negative anthropogenic impact on aquatic ecosystems. It leads to the degradation of both sweet and marine ecosystems, constituting a kind of secondary pollution of waters, which disturbs all types of their use. Undertakings related to preventing the negative effects of eutrophication are mainly conducted towards reducing the loads of nutrients introduced into surface waters and controlling the entire conditions in aquatic ecosystems in order to limit the development of aquatic vegetation. The increasingly restrictive legal requirement regarding the content of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater discharged into recipients enforces the application of expensive treatment technologies, and the public is becoming more aware of the rising costs of water and wastewater fees. In addition, wastewater treatment is a factor which has a negative impact on air quality due to greenhouse gas emissions and generates other environmental problems. The challenge for facilities, however, is determining which treatment alternatives will best meet their needs, both technically and financially, and to choose the most sustainable path. The problem of establishing a reasonable level of nutrient removal from wastewater, justified from an ecological and economic point of view is discussed in the paper.

SummaryWe use unique rich data for German manufacturing enterprises to investigate the product diversification - firm performance relationship. We find that an increase in the degree of product diversification has a negative impact on profitability when observed and unobserved firm characteristics are controlled for. The effects are statistically significant and large from an economic point of view. This helps to understand the fact that nearly 40 percent of all enterprises with at least 20 employees are single-product firms according to a detailed classification of products, and that multi-product enterprises with a large number of goods are a rare species.

The importance of the creative economy for the development of society not only from an economic but also from a social and cultural point of view has been the subject of numerous scientific and professional studies. The connecting link between them is the observation that creativity has been considered in recent years as a new type of competitive advantage. As a generator of added value for all businesses, the creative industries have unlimited growth potential and are thus seen as a route to sustainable development. One of the problems of the creative industry is to obtain resources for business development. This paper examines the financial structure of selected areas of the creative industries in the Slovak Republic, using mean values for 2016-2019, correlation and regression analysis of financial data in 2019 (before the negative impact of COVID19). The findings point to the absence of credit sources, which confirms the fact that these businesses are perceived as risky and unstable by banks and financial institutions in the Slovak Republic.

Abstract Background In 2020, Morocco recorded more than 59,370 new cases of cancer and more than 35,265 cases of death (International Agency for Research on Cancer, Annual report Morocco, 2020). Cancer is always accompanied by socially constructed, differentiated, and contingent interpretations and practices according to the socio-cultural and religious characteristics of each region. The study aims at describing the evolution of the socio-cultural and religious aspects of Moroccan cancer patients followed at the National Institute of Oncology (NIO) of Rabat between 2010 and 2020. Methods We have prospectively studied all cancer cases diagnosed at the National Oncology Institute (NIO), Rabat in 2019. We have collected 1102 cases. The data collected was compared with the results of the study carried out in 2010 (1600 cases). Statistical analysis has been assessed by SPSS 20 software and the correlations between socio-cultural characteristics were examined using a chi-square test. Results From a socio-economic point of view, almost all patients claim that cancer is a costly disease as well as a disease that leads to a drop in income and the inevitable impoverishment of Moroccan patients. The illiteracy rate is still high; rising from 38% in 2010 to 42.80% in 2020. On the psychological level, damage to body image (alopecia, mastectomy, hysterectomy,) can lead to stigmatizing and harms the marital relationship. The number of patients experiencing divorce and marital separation that seems to occur following cancer pathology remains high, despite a decrease of nearly 50% between 2010 and 2020. Concerning the spiritual aspect, in the Arab-Amazigh-Muslim culture, the impact of the occurrence of cancer is very particular, and the repercussions are assessed differently depending on the degree of conviction. For practicing believers, cancer is considered a divine test and an opportunity to improve. In the Qur’an, God tests the best of his disciples to reward them The rate of practicing believers has evolved from 49% in 2010 to 85.50% in 2020.But for non-practicing believers, cancer is regarded as a divine punishment coming from outside. New behaviors reported by this research concern the use of “roquia”. This spiritual cure is considered as an anti-cancer remedy. It uses Allah’s words from the holy “qur’an”, his faires names and his attributes. 42% of patients use “roquia”. Concerning phytotherapy, there was an increase in the percentage of participants using medicinal plants and even the most harmful plants (Arestiloch, Euphorbia) from 26% in 2010 to 51.50% in 2020. Conclusion The precarious social level of cancer patients, the lack of social and medical coverage, illiteracy, and lack of knowledge of religion, as well as dissatisfaction with conventional medicine, may lead patients to the use of traditional medicine (medicinal plants, visit of “marabouts”, “roquia”). This can have a negative impact on the quality of access to oncology care.

From an economic point of view, the spoilage of food products during processing and distribution has a negative impact on the food industry. Lipid oxidation and deterioration caused by the growth of microorganisms are the main problems during storage of food products. In order to reduce losses and extend the shelf-life of food products, the food industry has designed active packaging as an alternative to the traditional type. In the review, the benefits of active packaging materials containing biopolymers (polysaccharides and/or proteins) and active compounds (plant extracts, essential oils, nanofillers, etc.) are highlighted. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of this type of film has also been highlighted. In addition, the impact of active packaging on the quality and durability of food products during storage has been described.

Abstract Current biochar application in the global agronomic practice focuses firstly on economic profits. In this paper, we would like to draw attention to our results and experience from the economic assessment of the agronomic effect of applied biochar through the generated crop yields. The results come from a field experiment (locality Dolná Malanta, Slovakia, silt loam Haplic Luvisol – the most intensively used soil in the Slovak Republic for agricultural purposes), where a biochar experiment was established in 2014. Based on our data, it is evident that both the application of biochar and its application in combination with N-fertilisation in field conditions at current realization prices of commodities in individual years and high input costs are still unprofitable. However, we emphasize that from an economic point of view of the stand ard agronomic practice.

Public Private Partnerships (PPP) are viewed by the private sector as investment projects. An investment criterion, such as the internal rate of return (IRR), widely used by practitioners, is thus necessary in order to determine if the opportunity is sustainable from an economic point of view and worth pursuing. However, a cash flow may have multiple IRRs—is it appropriate in the context of PPPs to use this criterion? This paper provides a clear proposition to determine the potential number of real positive IRRs a cash flow may have, depending on the number of sign variations and the value of the net present value (NPV) calculated with a discount rate equal to 0 (NPV(r = 0)). This proposition can sometimes be used when other tests (such as Norstrom’s Criterion) are inconclusive to determine if a cash flow has a single real positive IRR. The proposition is generally met by the typical cash flow of a PPP project, validating the use of IRR as an investment criterion.

Public finances are a term used to denote specific financial relations and operations taking place within the economic system between public administration institutions, on the one hand, and other entities, on the other. From an economic point of view, a public contract means an efficient allocation of resources with the aim of material and material provision of public administration bodies with such services that these bodies cannot or do not want to secure themselves. Through public procurement, a relatively high volume of public spending is realized in each developed country. Public procurement of goods, services and works by public institutions currently accounts for a relatively high percentage of GDP, estimated at more than 15% in the economies of Central and Eastern Europe. The area of procurement is one of the key areas where the public and private sectors interact financially with each other. As part of the paper, we primarily deal with below-limit and above-limit contracts in public procurement in the Slovak Republic. As part of the research, we focused on the period from 2016 to 2019. The paper provides an overview of the number of procedures in public procurement for the period from 2016 to 2019. In this comparison of data, we try to demonstrate the strength of public procurement in the public sector as well as the volume of financial flows spent on procurement. Within the issue of our research, the acquisition of relevant documents as well as verified procedures is very problematic, as we do not have a significant number of sources of professional and science publications related to these topics in the Slovak Republic.
