O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a produção, a qualidade e tempo de prateleira de cultivares de tomate tipo italiano de crescimento determinado, produzidos sob ambiente protegido em condições de altas temperaturas. O cultivo foi realizado em Nova Mutum – MT, foram avaliados cinco cultivares: Fascínio (Feltrin sementes), Hy Color (Horticeres), Santa Adélia (TopSeed), SM-16 (Seminis) e Supera F1 (TopSeed), dispostos em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. As plantas foram conduzidas em “meia estaca” e não foram podadas. Os parâmetros avaliados foram relativos a produção, a qualidade dos frutos, tempo de prateleira e qualidade no pós-colheita. A cultivar Fascínio apresentou produtividade de 186,1 t ha-1, maior massa média de frutos (144,3g), maior calibre de fruto, (60,7mm), e menor perda de massa no pós-colheita (6,23%). Os melhores resultados de sólidos solúveis totais dos frutos que completaram a maturação na planta foram obtidos das cultivares Santa Adélia (4,3), Fascínio (4,27) e Hy Color (4,21), e dos frutos colhidos no estádio verde-maduro obteve destaque a cultivar Santa Adélia (5,85), e os frutos que ficaram em temperatura ambiente obtiveram maior média de sólidos solúveis totais (5,55). Palavras-chave: termotolerância; Lycopersicum esculentum Mill; produtividade; pós colheita; ambiente protegido.   The performance of determinate growth italian tomato cultivars in protected cropping under high temperatures   ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the production, quality and shelf time of determinate growth Italian tomato cultivars from a protected environment under high temperature conditions.  The cultivation was conducted in Nova Mutum, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Five cultivars were evaluated: ‘Fascínio’ (Feltrin Sementes), ‘Hy Color’ (Horticeres), ‘Santa Adélia’ (TopSeed), ‘SM-16’ (Seminis) and ‘Supera F1’ (TopSeed), disposed in randomized blocks with four repetitions. The plants were managed into the “meia estaca” tutoring method and were not pruned. The parameters evaluated were related to the production, quality of fruits, shelf time and postharvest quality. The ‘Fascínio’ cultivar presented productivity of 186.1 t ha-1, the largest average fruit weight (144.3 g), the largest fruit gauge (60.7 mm) and the smallest postharvest weight loss (6.23%). The total soluble solids best results of fruits that have matured in the plant were obtained from the ‘Santa Adélia’ (4.3), ‘Fascínio’ (4.27) e ‘Hy Color’ (4.21) cultivars. Among the fruits harvested at the mature-green stage, the ‘Santa Adélia’ (5.85) cultivar stood out. The fruits that stayed at room temperature obtained the largest total soluble solids average (5.55). ABSTRACT Plastic packaging from petroleum derives used in the food industry represents serious environmental problems. Alternative solutions to these problems consist of the development of biodegradable packaging, such as films and edible coatings including the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). In this research we evaluated the effect of the PVA application by two different techniques aiming to increase shelf life of ripe tomatoes, cultivar Carmen. The methodology of this study consisted in covering tomatoes with a PVA solution and also with PVA impregnated tracing paper. The different fruit lots were kept in polystyrene trays for 19 days on a laboratory bench at a controlled temperature of 25±3ºC. The fruit analyzes were compared to the control fruits without any treatment, being evaluated firmness, pH, titratable total acidity, mass loss, total soluble solids content, water activity and color determination of fruit surface. Among the different treatments, the PVA coating applied directly to the fruits contributed to control the firmness and the mass loss, as well as this treatment influenced the total soluble solids content, the luminosity and the red color of fruits with statistical difference compared to the control and covered with tracing paper (with or without PVA). The PVA coating solution applied directly on the fruits contributed to maintain the postharvest quality of the ripe tomatoes.

Over three years the postharvest quality of 'Marli' peaches harvested from the integrated (IFP) and conventional production (CFP) systems was evaluated. The peaches were harvested from commercial orchards of Prunus persica at two locations close to the city of São Jerônimo, RS, Brazil, and stored at 0.5°C for 10, 20 or 30 days. The peaches were evaluated at harvest, at retrieval from storage and after ripening periods at 20°C. No differences in fruit weight losses were determined. Decay incidence was low, and no differences were detected amongst systems in both 2001 and 2002 seasons, but in the 2000 season CFP peaches were more decayed. Flesh firmness of peaches from the IFP system were greater than CFP fruits in the years 2000 and 2001. In 2002, firmness changed little during storage and ripening. Peaches from the IFP in 2000 had higher titratable acidity and lower soluble solids. In the 2000 season, flesh browning was observed in decayed fruits, always at ripening after 20 or 30 days of cold storage Chilling injuries such as browning, woolliness and leatheriness ocurred in 2002. There were no differences amongst systems related to peach quality.

Beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) is a culture of great demand in Brazil due to its high nutritional value. However, water availability is a determining factor on its production. An alternative to reduce the damage caused by water stress is to apply organic solutes, such as ascorbic acid. The purpose hereof was to evaluate the postharvest quality of beetroots grown under different irrigation depths and ascorbic acid doses. The experiment was carried out in the Human, Social, and Agricultural Center’s Postharvest Physiology and Technology Laboratory of the Federal University of Paraíba, Bananeiras, Paraíba, Brazil, in a completely randomized design with five doses of ascorbic acid (0.00, 0.29, 1.00, 1.71, and 2.00 mM) and five irrigation depths (40.0%, 51.6%, 80.0%, 108.4%, and 120.0% of the evapotranspiration), combined according to each Box Central Compound experimental matrix, totaling nine treatments with five repetitions. The variables total soluble solids, electrical conductivity, hydrogenation potential, titratable acidity, total soluble solids and titratable acidity ratio, moisture, dry matter, and mineral matter were evaluated. The data were submitted for analysis of variance and polynomial regression. There was a significant interaction between the irrigation depths and the ascorbic acid doses in every variable, except for electrical conductivity and mineral matter. The postharvest characteristics of beetroots improved with applications of ascorbic acid doses in the thinner irrigation depths. The greatest dose of ascorbic acid (2 mM) in the thinner irrigation depth (40%) increases the postharvest quality of beet tuberous roots.

[email protected]     1 RESUMO   Considerando a grande expressão econômica na produtividade da manga para a agricultura brasileira e a dependência da irrigação, que viabiliza o seu elevado cultivo no semiárido, objetivou-se avaliar a influência de arranjos de sistemas de irrigação na fisiologia, produtividade e qualidade dos frutos da mangueira cultivar ‘Tommy Atkins’ no Semiárido brasileiro. Foram testados quatro arranjos do sistema de irrigação (um microaspersor sob a copa – MPP; um microaspersor entre plantas – MEP; duas linhas laterais com gotejadores por fileira de planta - G2L e uma faixa de gotejo em formato de anel ou espiral - GRP ao redor da planta) sob um delineamento em parcelas subdivididas, com quatro arranjos como parcelas e dois ciclos produtivos como subparcelas, com cinco repetições. Foram avaliados os parâmetros fisiológicos (temperatura foliar, fotossíntese, transpiração e condutância estomática), de produção (número e produtividade e peso médio de frutos) e parâmetros da qualidade (densidade, volume, firmeza da polpa, teor de sólidos solúveis totais e acidez total titulável). Four arrangements of the irrigation system were tested (a micro sprinkler under the canopy - MPP; a micro sprinkler between plants - MEP; two lateral lines with drippers per row of plant - G2L and a drip band in the shape of a ring or spiral - GRP around of the plant) under a split plot design, with four arrangements as plots and two production cycles as subplots, with five replications. Physiological parameters (leaf temperature, photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance), production (number and productivity and average fruit weight) and quality parameters (density, volume, pulp firmness, total soluble solids content and total acidity) were evaluated titratable). The hoses submitted to the GRP and G2L treatments showed higher stomatal conductance and better quality and fruit production indexes in relation to the MEP and MPP arrangements, except for the total soluble solids.   Keywords: mango, localized irrigation, plant breeding.

This study assessed the effect of the recently-introduced Life+ (ILIP, Valsamoggia, Italy) active packaging system on the postharvest quality of sweet cherries and strawberries. This system uses Equilibrium Modified Atmosphere Packaging (EMAP) to achieve specific intra-package conditions with three synergistic elements: an unvented and anti-mist heat sealable container, an active (naturally-antimicrobial) pad, and a heat-sealed, laser micro-perforated film of a specified gas permeability. Post-packaging quality parameters were monitored for 10 (strawberries) and 15 days (cherries): headspace gas concentration, weight loss, titratable acidity, total soluble solids, pH, disease incidence, and sensory quality. Results showed that use of the Life+ system delayed postharvest senescence by maintaining fruit color, acidity, and vitamin C content, and decreasing fruit weight loss and decay. The use of EMAP in sweet cherry resulted in enhanced sensory qualities compared to traditional perforated containers. The results suggest that the Life+ system leads to better sensory properties and improved shelf-life for strawberries and sweet cherries.

ABSTRACT Studies with nitrogen and potassium in yellow passion fruit cultivars with high yield potential are scarce in semiarid regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence the N and K doses on productivity and fruit quality of different passion fruit cultivars in irrigated conditions in the northern of Minas Gerais state. The study was installed at experimental farm located in Janaúba-MG. This area was located at 15º 47’ S and 43º 18’ W, 516 m above sea level. The experiment was in completely randomized block with four replications, arranged in 4 x 6 factorial design consisting of four Passion Fruit cultivars (BRS Sol do Cerrado, BRS Ouro Vermelho, BRS Gigante Amarelo, IAC 275) and six N and K doses, which corresponded to 0-0, 50-125, 100-250, 150-375, 200 -500 and 250-625 kg ha-1 yr-1 of N and K2O, respectively. BRS Gigante Amarelo and BRS Sol do Cerrado cultivars showed higher productivity. Total fruit yield and average fruit weight were higher for BRS Sol do Cerrado and IAC 275, BRS Gigante Amarelo and BRS Ouro Vermelho cultivars, respectively. IAC 275 showed the highest pulp yield and along with BRS Sol do Cerrado, showed the higher soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio. BRS Sol do Cerrado, BRS Gigante Amarelo and IAC 275 cultivars showed higher pulp productivity, indicating that they are more promising for passion fruit juice industry.

Potassium has significant effect on quantity and quality of tomato yield because of its vital roles in photosynthesis, favoring high energy status and appropriate nutrient translocation and water uptake in plants. However, little is understood or it is being overlooked under Eritrean condition. Besides, poor soil fertility is among the major production constraints in Eritrea. The field experiment was therefore conducted to investigate the effect of potassium levels on productivity and fruit quality of tomato at Hamelmalo, Eritrea. The experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design with nine potassium levels (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 kg K2O/ha) replicated thrice. Data was collected on yield and fruit quality parameters and they were subjected to one-way analysis of variance (1-way ANOVA). The results of this study revealed that potassium had significant effect in all yield and quality parameters studied. Fruit diameter, fruit weight per plant, total yield, total soluble solids, specific gravity and fruit dry matter content showed significant increase with an increase in potassium level from 0 to 150 kg K2O/ha and thereafter decreased while fruit moisture content was increased in the range of 150 - 400 kg K2O/ha. As a result, highest fruit weight (1.39 kg/plant), fruit yield (15.45 t/ha), total soluble solids (3.84 oBrix), specific gravity, (1.46) and fruit dry matter (5.68%) were recorded from 150 kg K2O/ha. Therefore it is recommended that potassium fertilizers should be used and balanced NPK fertilizers should be applied to improve yield and quality of tomato produced.

In the present study the extended storage life of cut apples (Red Delicious) examined using nano zeolite particles and potassium permanganate. Titratable acidity, total soluble solids, pH and weight loss was measured .Visual observations of fruits during storage were investigated. The results showed that pH, soluble solids and fruit weight loss has increased during storage. The acidity of fruits stored with nano zeolite was less decreased as compared with potassium permanganate. Wild plum has many medicinal, therapeutic and nutritive uses, but its fruits are collected in the wild and less researched. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of storage tem­perature on postharvest fruit quality of wild plum. The fruits of wild plum were subjected to different storage treatments at 0, 5, 10 and 15 ± 1°C in a completely randomized design. The results showed that as storage temperature decreased below 15°C, the incidence and severity of chilling injury significantly (p<0.05) increased. As storage temperature increased from 0 to 15°C fruit titratable acidity (TTA) and vitamin C content significantly (p< 0.05) decreased, but juice pH, soluble solids content (SSC) and weight loss significantly (p< 0.05) increased. The decrease in TTA and vitamin C content, and increase in SSC and juice pH was attributed to fruit ripening. The increase in fruit weight loss was attributed to higher transpiration and respiration. It was concluded that to extend the storage-life and marketing period of wild plum fruits, the fruits should be stored at 15°C and 90-95% RH. The effect of preharvest CO2 enrichment (1000 μl·liter–1) on postharvest quality of tomato fruit (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. `Virosa') was studied with an emphasis on soluble sugars, ripening, and mineral composition. High-CO2 fruit had higher concentrations of sucrose, glucose, fructose, and total soluble solids than ambient-CO2 fruit. High-CO2 fruit also ripened more slowly and was characterized by lower respiration and ethylene production rates than ambient-CO2 fruit. Concentrations of N, P, and K were lower in the high-CO2 fruit than in the ambient-CO2 fruit, whereas those of S, Ca, and Mg were the same for both treatments. Preharvest CO2 enrichment of `Virosa' tomato enhances fruit desirability in terms of slower postharvest ripening and higher concentrations of soluble sugars and total soluble solids.
