Linear-weight indicators of pilengas growth were analyzed when using feed with different protein content. When fed with granulated high – protein feed (52%), the absolute increase was 8.7 g, and the average daily increase was 0.29 g/day. Feed with a protein content of 45% showed less growth results (absolute-4.4 g, average daily-0.15 g/day). This result is due to the high content of protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

Background. In Leningrad Province, winter rye is an irreplaceable cereal crop for food and feed. At present, a reduction of the acreage under rye is observed. This situation may be changed by developing rye cultivars capable of maintaining high and stable protein content across variable natural environments. The objective of the research encompassed 9 winter rye cultivars developed by V. D. Kobylyansky and O. V. Solodukhina at VIR, all recommended for cultivation in this area.Materials and methods. The experimental part of the work was carried out in 2012–2017 in the fields of Pushkin and Pavlovsk Laboratories of VIR. Nine low-pentosan winter rye cultivars bred at VIR were analyzed. Sowing time was within the period from August 28 to September 11. Agricultural practice used in the experiments was conventional for the Northwestern Region. The area of the plot was 10 m2; there were three replications. Seeding rate was 350 seeds/m2 or 3.5 million viable seeds per hectare. Analysis of variance was used for mathematical processing. Parameters of adaptability, stability, plasticity and stress resistance were calculated for the “grain protein content” indicator.Results. Protein content in grain for the studied winter rye cultivars in the environments of the Northwest region averaged 10.3% and varied from 8.7% to 12.2% depending on environmental conditions and hereditary features of the cultivars. It was confirmed by the results of the analysis of variance: the share of the ‘year of trial’ factor’s effect on protein content was 71.9%. The best conditions for increased protein content were observed in 2012, 2013 and 2016 (10.7%, 11.9% and 12.2%, respectively). The analysis of average protein content in grain showed that the cultivars ‘Ilmen’, ‘Vavilovskaya’, ‘Krasnoyarskaya universalnaya’, Novaya Era, ‘Yantarnaya’ exceeded the reference cultivar ‘Era’ by (1.0 – 10.0%). The most adaptable in the context of grain protein content under the conditions of the Northwestern Region were the winter rye cultivars ‘Ilmen’, ‘Era’, ‘Yantarnaya’, Novaya Era, and Rushnik 2. The sum of their ranks according to the coefficients of variation (V), environmental plasticity (O), relative trait stability (St²) and homeostasis (Hom), as well as each cultivar’s adaptability coefficient (AC), stress resistance level (Y min – Y max) and compensatory ability (Y min + Y max/2), was 13–31 units.Conclusion. Rye cultivars ‘Ilmen’, ‘Era’, ‘Yantarnaya’, Novaya Era, and Rushnik 2 possess high adaptability and can maintain high protein content levels in grain under widely varied environmental conditions in the Northwestern Region of Russia.

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the phenotypic variability of grain quality indicators and to identify the set of the most informative indicators for the selection of different use varieties of winter rye. The research was carried out in Tatar Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture – Subdivision of the “Kazan Scientific Center of Russian Academy of Sciences” in 2001–2015 on 15 varieties of winter rye. Twenty parameters defining quality of grain and raw value were estimated: technological indicators (thousand grain mass, full-scale weight and grain uniformity), parameters preharvest sprouting (falling number, rate of amylogram, temperature of peak of starch gelatinization), kinematic water extract viscosity (WEV) of grain meal, baking properties (organoleptic assessment of trial baking bread). The greatest influence of genotype was found on WEV (34.8 %) and protein content (27.8 %). These features should be primarily the subject of phenotypic evaluation in the breeding process. Phenotypic variability of criteria of carbohydrate-amylase complex, α-amylases activity and technological parameters was determined predominantly (68.6…82.5 %) by environmental factors. There was no significant relationship between falling number and protein content. The falling number correlated with the rate of amylogram and the temperature of gelatinization. Positive conjugation of the average power of WEV with the rate of amylogram and falling number was found. On the basis of a prolonged phenotypic evaluation using principal component analysis we have optimized the analyzed indicators of quality properties of winter rye grain. For breeding evaluation of winter rye it is proposed to use four integral indi cators having the greatest weight load: protein content, falling number, water extract viscosity and thousand grain mass. This complex of features will provide objectivity and completeness of the evaluation of the breeding material. It was shown that the kinematic viscosity of the water extract should become an important selection index, both for determining the baking qualities of rye, and for revealing the fodder grain advantages.

The research tested the application of complex fertilizers such as seed treatment with “Mikromak” and double topdressing by “Kodima R”, “Kodafol”, “Mikroel”, and “Strada N” on two backgrounds of mineral nutrition. Application of N40P50K70 increased grain productivity by 0.29–0.66 t ha-1 or 7.0–16.0%. All the preparations positively affected grain yield of winter rye. “Mikromak” and “Strada N” improved grain productivity by 0.46 t ha-1 on the background of N40P50K70 while “Mikromak” and “Mikroel” — by 0.33 t ha-1 on the background of N40P50K70 + N20 due to high number of reproductive stems and 1000 kernel weight. Seed treatment by “Mikromak” improved productivity of control plants by 0.31 t ha-1. “Mikromak” positively affected the number of productive stems from 2.9 to 3.6 pcs, 1000 kernel weight increased from 29.0 to 30.4 g. Crude protein content reached 6.4–9.8% in untreated seeds and 9.4–12.1% — when using “Mikromak”. Crude protein yield amounted to 450–600 kg ha-1 under “Mikromak” application exceeding the untreated variants by 130–160 kg ha-1. Application of “Mikroel” and “Strada N” provided the increase in crude protein of 90–110 kg ha-1 on the background of N40P50K70.

Investigations were performed at Pushkin experimental station (Pushkin, Leningrad region), in 2010-2015. Genetic material was represented by 300 samples from Vavilov collection, coming from 18 countries. Results of samples evaluation (productivity, quality, resistance to pests and diseases, suitability for mechanized harvesting) are represented. Widely grown Russian and foreign varieties, interesting for practical usage, are described. As the result of carrot samples investigation, different level of productivity, strongly related with type of variety, was revealed. Samples of carrot, obtained stable level of productivity and quality are described. Best varieties with high level of carotene (13-17 mg/100 g) were NIIOH-336 (Russia), Amro (Denmark), Asmer Early Market (UK), Amsterdam Foram (Netherlands). At the same time, it is very impotent to combine components, which are responsible for the certain type of taste and quality too. Several varieties, bearing high level of resistance to carrot fly (Chamaepsila rosae) and storage diseases, were found. Perspective breeding material for the major directions of carrot breeding programs was chosen. It is highly recommended to use the set of varieties, bearing complex of valuable (early maturation, productivity, marketability, resistance to pests and diseases) traits: Feonia Banta and Nantes Scarletta (Denmark), Formula, Marko, Camillo и Flaxton (Netherlands), Asmer Super Strite and Suko (UK), Lossa Lunga (Italy), Nantsky (Bulgaria), Chantenay Supreme Long (USA), Selbstung (germany), Shantene 2461, Losinoostrovskaya 13, Vitaminnaya 6 (Russia). Prospects of heterosis breeding are adduced.

Abstract The soil-zoological research took place in 2018 on the territory of the soil-hydromeliorative station “Malinovsky” of Lisinsky educational-experimental forest farm (Tosnensky district, Leningrad region, Russia) which was drained in 1973-1974. The purpose of this research is a comparative evaluation of the density of the population and taxonometric variety of eco-functional groups of macrofauna on the Gleysols Histic Drainic after 45 year draining period and the similar biotop without drainage. The constitution of group and species and the trophic structure of soil macrofauna have been researched. 118 individuals of geobionts out of 3 types and 6 classes have been collected. It’s been stated that zoophages are the trophic dominating group. After 45 year draining period a poor groups and species constitution, a low number of large soil invertebrates and a small share of saprophages have survived which corresponds to the fauna of the soil in oligotrophic bogs.

Four varieties and 3 promising lines of spring barley breeding by Tatar Research Institute of Agriculture were studied for grain nutrition to identify the most promising ones. The work was conducted in 2015-2017 in Predkamye Republic of Tatarstan. Grey forest soil, humus content 3.35-3.52 % (GOST 26213-91), alkaline-hydrolyzable nitrogen 85.0...94.0 mg/kg (by A.H. Kornfield), mobile phosphorus 251...287 and exchangeable potassium 149...167 mg/kg (by Kirsanov; GOST 26207-91). The predecessor is winter rye, the repetition is fourfold, the standard grade is Raushan. It was found that line k-295-12, on average over 3 years, significantly exceeded the standard by 27.77 g in crude protein content; by 20.0 g in digestible protein content and by 7.35 g in digestible protein content per feeding unit. The variability of sugar content in varieties was 30.67 ... 47.0 g, significantly exceeded the standard by 13.33 g variety Tevkech (47.0 g) and by 13.0 g line k-23-13 (46.67 g). The fat content was formed in the standard 19.03 g, varieties Kamashevsky, Endan and lines k-23-23, k-561-13 and k-295-12 exceeded it by 7.47; 5.77; 11.47; 9.84 and 5.67 g, respectively. The exchange energy content in grain ranged from 14.42 MJ of the variety Raushan, to 14.72 MJ of the line k-295-12, with no significant differences between genotypes. In the dry year of 2015, the crude and digestible protein content was 148.0...165.0 and 110.74...118.8 g, respectively, and in 2016 it was 129.00...164.4 and 92.88...118.37 g, respectively. In favorable 2017, the content of crude and digestible protein were lower, the varieties Raushan and Tevkech were characterized by the greatest decrease in crude and digestible protein (65.7 and 67.4 % to the level of 2015). On average over 3 years, the best line was k-295-12 for the set of indicators of grain nutrition
