In its becoming, Poltava State Medical University has passed a thorny path from the odontology faculty, created on the basis of the Kharkov Medical Academy in 1921, to the leading specialized institution for training medical and healthcare professionals. In 2021 the university has celebrated its 100th anniversary. In 1950, the Department of Human Anatomy moved to a new location and dedicated to the training of medical professionals, research activities. The scope of scientific research conducted at the department covered issues on the structure of glands of the mucous membranes, lymphoid tissue of the initial section of the digestive system, structural peculiarities of autonomic nervous system. The department put a lot of effort to equip microscopic, histological, histochemical and photo laboratories, to create the museum of the department. Scientists developed and manufactured various devices and techniques for conducting morphological studies, which made it possible to publish numerous methodological recommendations, textbooks, and to conduct research for the candidate and doctor degrees. The anatomical museum, refurbished and modernized in 2005 and known even abroad is the subject of honour not only for the department, but for the University as well. The museum is also a matter of utmost interest to young visitors during the Open Days, students from other universities. The Department of Human Anatomy seeks to capitalize on a number of pedagogical experiences and research achievements to transfer knowledge and know-how to young generation of students and scientists.

In 2015 the Southern Federal University celebrates its centennial anniversary. The University is the largest research and education center of the Russian south, and its history dates back to 1915 when the Imperial University of Warsaw was moved to Rostov-on-Don. The paper focuses on various factors that have contributed to the development of social psychology at the SFU (former RSU) over the period of 45 years, from the establishment of the Department of General and Social Psychology in 1971 to the emergence of the Department of Social Psychology in 1999 that is still active nowadays. Special attention is drawn to the analysis of the general context in which social psychology has been developing. The paper traces the origins of scholarly activities carried out at the Department of Social Psychology and provides a description of research areas covered by the staff of the Faculty of Psychology. The paper concludes that a distinctive feature of the Department is that each researcher provides academic courses and training in the field of his/her research activities and practice.

The article describes the history of the Department of Human Anatomy at Omsk State Medical University. At the stages of its formation, the continuity, preservation and enhancement of the traditions of the Russian anatomical school are traced. It is noted that in the training of doctors, the staff of the department adheres to a reasonable combination of traditional anatomical methods with innovations and modernization of the educational process. Brief biographies, scientific and pedagogical staffs of the heads of the department are presented and the team of teachers at each stage during the centuries-old history is characterized. In teaching of students, the department implements onto- and phylogenetic principles, a functional approach, the doctrine of individual variability, and the clinical orientation of teaching. The main scientific areas of research of the department staff are the study of individual, age-related topographic and projection features of organs and other anatomical structures on the skeleton and skin of the human body, experimental and clinical lymphology and angiology, and the development of the museum.

Thanks to a recent donation by Elsevier, the Medical University of Vienna now holds in its collections the known existing original paintings for Eduard Pernkopf's Atlas of Topographic and Applied Human Anatomy. This atlas is widely considered a pinnacle of the art of anatomical illustration. However, it is severely tainted by its historical origins. Pernkopf was a high-ranking National Socialist and co-responsible for the expulsion of hundreds of Jewish scientists and students from the university. Also, the Vienna Institute of Anatomy, which Pernkopf headed, received during the war the bodies of at least 1377 people executed by the regime, many for their political views or acts of resistance, including at least seven Jewish victims. Although it is impossible to individually identify the people used for the atlas, it is to be assumed that a considerable number of the paintings produced during and after the war are based on the bodies of these victims. Against this background, and out of respect for the victims, use of Pernkopf's atlas in medical teaching and training should be — wherever possible without compromising medical outcomes — reduced to a minimum. Given the strong variability of human anatomy, even the most detailed anatomical illustrations cannot replace teaching and training in the dissection room. As the experience at the Medical University of Vienna and elsewhere demonstrates, Pernkopf's atlas is far from irreplaceable. In keeping with the stipulations of the contract of donation, the Medical University of Vienna considers the Pernkopf originals primarily as historical artifacts, which will support the investigation and teaching of this dark chapter of the history of medicine in Austria, out of responsibility towards the victims. The need to organize a medical institute in the center of Soviet Russia was caused by difficult socio-economic conditions, an increase in the incidence of the population, and insufficient provision of medical care in the 30s of the 20th century. It was rational to found the new medical university in the city of Kursk to provide of the doctors training with the western part of the Central Black Earth Region. The decision of the Soviet Russia Government was implemented in 1935. One of the first to form and begin work was the Department of Normal Anatomy. The material base for ensuring the educational process at this difficult time was collected bit by bit and required a long time. However, the Great Patriotic War soon ensued and the department as part of the institute was evacuated to Alma-Ata in 1941. After the evacuation in 1943 its employees had to restore both the premises and the provision of the educational process with cadavers. The first heads of the department L.A. Shangina, M.K. Mavromati, N.V. Dobroserdov in the 40-50s began the formation of the anatomical museum and laid the foundations for scientific activity, which were mainly devoted to the study of the lymphatic system. From 1954 to 1966 under the heading of Professor A.A. Otelin were made significant changes to the educational process, the results of more than 40 morphological studies were published and 4 dissertations were defended. The main significant transformations occurred at the department during the years of Professor D.A. Sigalevich heading, 23 candidates and 4 doctoral dissertations were defended, a complete reconstruction of the anatomical museum was made, and many methodological manuals were created. Followers of Professor D.A. Sigalevich - E.M. Smolyar, E.P. Borzilov, N.N. Kaznacheev were keepers and enhanced the good traditions and staff of the department. Since 1999, the head of the department is Professor V.V. Kharchenko, who completely changed the face of the department, equipping it with new technical teaching aids, modern environmentally friendly preparations.

The academic potential of the Kuban State Medical University has been formed as a result of close interaction between university and academic science. Such collaboration encourages the development of highly qualifi ed academic and teaching staff, increases the importance of conducting fundamental studies and forms an information basis for boosting research and educational processes in the university. Over a century, academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) have contributed to the development of the Kuban State Medical University by taking part in fundamental research projects and creating scientifi c schools. The Kuban State Medical University has received ongoing intellectual support from representatives of academic science both in the formation of long-term developmental strategies and implementation of individual scientifi c projects. The collaboration between RAS and the university has been carried out under different socio-economic and political conditions. The Kuban State Medical University will continue implementation of fundamental research projects in close interaction with the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) in the foreseeable future. This article presents a brief biography of 15 RAS academicians and corresponding members having made a signifi cant contribution to the development of the Kuban State Medical University, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
