The research aims to investigate the politeness in language and action by students of Letters Faculty at Methodist University. Seeing the students from different etnic, religion, and culture, should be understanding and well manage to avoid future conflict and maintain the harmony of diversity among them. The research was done in the fifth-semester Cross Cultural Understanding class of Letters Faculty, The Methodist University of Indonesia. The researchers used a qualitative approach by observing the activities of students and recording their utterances during responding to the point of view. The result shows that the students applied the four types of politeness strategies in responding to context of avoiding conflict and maintain the harmony. The types are bald on record strategy, positive strategy, negative strategy and off record strategy. From the four types of politeness strategies, bald on record strategy is dominantly used by students. It is due to the students have a similar position, and it seems that no distance between them. All the communications are between students to students. For a reason, saying something directly and to the point are frequently used. Being polite should be in words and actions. From the research, students are polite in words but not in action.   .

This study deals with politeness strategies in political language. The aim of the study is to describe how Indonesian politicians realize politeness in their language. The subject was taken nine parties who have representatives. They come from different parties: Democrat, Golkar, PDIP, PKS, PPP, PKB, PAN, Gerindra and Hanura. Data were classified and verified with reference to the criteria of politeness strategies as determined by Brown & Levinson (1987); cover the bald on record strategy, positive strategy, negative strategy and off-record strategy. The finding show that there were four types of politeness strategies used by Politicians in different of types of illocutionary acts; positive strategy, bald on record strategy, negative strategy, and off-record strategy. The most dominant type of politeness strategies used was positive strategy. The most dominant type was due to fact that speakers in interaction try to get closer the hearers. They use the group identity marker in addressing someone so there is no distance relationship between the speaker and hearer. They also gave the reasons when they speak in order to satisfy the hearer. Key words: politician; political language; politeness strategy

Abstract The goal of this study is to examine the strategies of politeness used in the Qur’an, the holy book of Muslims, to address and represent women. Women have been represented negatively in many different types of texts through face-threatening acts that sustain masculine power and hegemony. This study attempts to investigate the image of women in the most sacred book of Muslims. Two aspects are examined herein: the representation of women in relation to sensitive issues like sex and marriage, and the forms of address and reference to women. A qualitative approach is used to provide interpretations of the hidden meanings in the selected excerpts, adopting Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness and Leech’s maxims of politeness as the guides for the analysis. The analysis has revealed that women all through Qur’an have been addressed and referred to decently and politely. Unlike most of the other topics where bald-on-record strategies are used, the use of off-record strategies and positive and negative face strategies of politeness have been found to be dominant in discussion of issues relevant to women. These strategies have been used to avoid unpleasant communication in spiritual issues, and also to avoid misrepresentation of women, demeaning of their persons, causing any embarrassment, and thereby saving the face of both women and recipients. However, bald-on-record strategies are sometimes used in topics related to legal matters concerning familial and social unity and solidarity. The analysis has demonstrated the means by which language is used in the Glorious Qur’an to courteously address women. Concerning interpersonal maxims, the approbation, modesty, sympathy, tact, and agreement maxims have shown to be evident in addressing and referring to women. This study will contribute to the field of pragmatics and will lead to cross-religious and cross-cultural understanding during a period where Islam and its teachings are being widely questioned and examined.

The purpose of this study was to determine the cross culture as a meeting point between centers in the cultural vortex. The research method in this study uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Culture is an entity that has never been timeless, how could it not even without the culture of the world not materialize. Talking about culture, of course we cannot escape the discussion about friction between cultures. The results of this research, this friction event that makes the emergence of potential conflicts if culture is only understood with tribal and rigid spirit. A process of cross cultural communication is needed to present a dialogue space for each cultural agent. Certainly to produce successful cross-cultural communication requires an awareness of culture in terms of verbs or cultural understanding as a process. This study uses news photographs and interviews with journalists to explore how Australia’s unprecedented 2019–2020 bushfire season was depicted for Australian and non-Australian audiences in order to extend transnational understanding of iconicity’s tenets and how news values vary across contexts. It does so first by examining the Sydney Morning Herald’s coverage over 3 months and then by contrasting this with international coverage that began in early 2020 once the issue spilled onto the world stage. Australia’s coverage focused intensely on human actors involved in the disaster while the vast numbers of affected animals were virtually absent. In contrast, international media visually depicted the disaster as an environmental and ecological issue with global consequences. The results suggest a need for a definition of iconicity that is inclusive to non-human actors and to inanimate forces that are personified. It also extends our cross-cultural understanding of the visual expression of news values.

To a modern executive officer enterprise management means challenging requirements in search of unconventional solutions in system administration organization. A whole spectrum of solutions is found when you use knowledge, traditions and managerial decisions existing in other spheres. This article contemplates concepts and philosophy that consider the problem from the other point of view and find new or specialized decisions from related areas. A comparison between workload management in technological system and human resources is used as an example. Based on this comparison implications are made about certain compatibility of these systems and possible adaptation of the existing management methods. At the end we come to the conclusion of benefit from using intersectorial and cross-cultural experience.

This article is about some lessons of the multi-cultural analysis of a joint Russian-British educational project. The analysis, based on the achievements of Russian pedagogical science, about the achievement of the most effective cross-cultural communication, can be listed among the outcomes of the project, along with the applied results, which consists in developing an educational management training program. The growth of innovation process and international contacts in education testifies to the fact that education culture is evolving toward a new quality. In the evolution/process, the basic needs of schools, teachers and education managers are identified and conceptualized. Sharing achievements and discoveries in professional growth should be kept in mind and that fulfilling the needs can only take place within the context of the cultural-pedagogic position inherent to an individual teacher, a group of teachers, or a school. From the point of view of cross-cultural analysis, the specifics lie in the inherent values and the level at which the activity is typically performed. This analysis equips the researcher with the criteria necessary for identifying the culture type dealt with. This latter can be used then as a tool for analyzing and designing innovations.
