While adolescents in India face a rapidly changing economic environment, the choices available to unmarried girls are very different from those available to boys. Girls are much less likely than boys to remain unmarried into their twenties, complete middle school, or generate income. Due to social norms, they have limited control over their life choices, and are less likely than boys to be allowed mobility within or beyond their immediate community. In 2001, the Population Council teamed with CARE India to test a pilot intervention to enhance skills and expand life choices for adolescent girls living in the slums of Allahabad. The 10-month intervention tested the effect of the skills intervention on the girls’ reproductive health knowledge, social contacts and mobility, self-esteem, and perception of gender roles. The impacts were assessed using survey responses from girls who were interviewed in both baseline and endline surveys. As noted in this brief, girls and their parents found the life skills training acceptable, but the intervention had little overall impact.

Fear of Negative Evaluation and issues with self-image could be two potential threats to school adolescents. A great deal of research has described associations between fears of negative evaluation self-image among adolescents which will, in turn, affect the psychosocial development of adolescents. From the extensive review of the literature, it can be concluded that life skills training is an effective tool to deal with a range of adolescent's issues. The main objective of this study is to assess the effect of life skill training on fear of negative evaluation and self-image among school adolescents. The current study is a quasi-experimental study conducted among 47 school adolescents who score low in self-esteem scale. The study indicates that life skills training were very effective in dealing with the fear of negative evaluation and self-image.

Abstract Background Puberty is a sensitive period of life for developing specific skills and knowledge and acquiring abilities and attributes that are essential for managing emotions and assuming adult roles. Thus, this has implications for health educational programs to responses to the experimentation and exploration that takes place during puberty. Objectives This study aimed to examine the effect of life skills training using health literacy strategies on self-esteem and self-efficacy in adolescent female students. Methods This was a semi-experimental study with intervention-control groups performed on 96 female students (7th grade of high school) in Mashhad, Iran from January 2017 to Jun 2017. The sampling method was a multi-stage random sampling. The samples were divided into two groups: an intervention group and a control group (each one having 50 subjects) through the simple randomized approach. Data collection tools used were the Coopersmith Self-esteem Questionnaire and Sherer’s Self-efficacy Questionnaire. Life skills training for the intervention group consisted of five sessions of theoretical training and workshops with role play and were designed based on health literacy strategies. The pretest, posttest and follow-up (3 months after the intervention) was conducted for both groups. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 19 software (t-test, Mann-Whitney, chi-square (χ2) and repeated data analysis). Results Before the intervention, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of self-esteem score (p = 0.70) and self-efficacy (p = 0.10), but immediately after training, as well as 3 months later, a significant difference was found between the two groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion Based on the findings, life skills educational interventions based on health literacy strategies could promote the self-esteem and self-efficacy abilities among female students during puberty.

Professionals who meet and work with adolescents hold important information and perspectives on adolescents’ mental health that, in addition to the adolescents’ voices, can shed light on complex issues. The aim was to explore professionals’ views on what challenges they face and how they can strengthen today’s adolescents’ mental health. This study involves four group interviews, conducted in March and October of 2020, including professionals with different working backgrounds. Data were analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. Two categories emerged: navigating life arenas and support for mental health. The first category included the demanding aspects of school, the challenges of social media, and the professionals’ thoughts on which pieces of mental health knowledge adolescents are lacking. The second category included what the professionals thought today’s parents need to develop and do to best support their children. Moreover, self-critical views were expressed on which aspects the professionals could do better to improve adolescents’ mental health. In conclusion, listening to professionals working with adolescents talk about adolescents’ mental health gives important insights. According to the professionals, both adolescents and their parents need improved life skills, including a strengthened and empowered self-esteem as well as improved mental health literacy.

Approximately 1 billion people or 1 out of every 6 people in the world are teenagers, where 85% of them live in developing countries. The knowledge of adolescents about reproduction health in Indonesias still very low. Adolescent reproduction problems not only give impact physically but also can affect mental health, emotion, economical condition and social welfare in long term. Pre menstrual syndrome often leads to physical and emotional disorders. The objective of this research is to know the correlation of reproduction health knowledge toward the attitude to face pre-menstrual syndrome of female students on X and XI grade in MAN 2 Madiun. The study was cross sectional using cluster sampling. As much as 32 respondents (62%) had higher reproduction knowledge compared to the mean. 27 respondents (54%) had higher values above the average of attitude values . Data analysis of the Pearson test (p = 0.000), which is statistically signi cant and r =0,740 indicates strong correlation. There was a signi cant correlation between reproductive health knowledge toward attitude to face pre-menstrual syndrome of female students in X and XI grade in MAN 2 Madiun.Keywords: knowledge, reproductive health, attitude, pre-menstrual syndrome.
