This paper reports the outcome assessment of our accounting department's writing-skill improvement initiative. We employ complementary experimental designs to examine the effects of professionally relevant writing experiences on accounting students' writing-skill development. Using a between-subjects experimental design, we compare the writing skills of accounting students who participated in our writing initiative with the writing skills of other business students who did not participate. Using a within-subjects experimental design, we track improvements of accounting students' writing skills over time. Results from both outcome assessment methodologies indicate that accounting students' writing skills improve as students participate in our writing initiative. This paper provides insight into the features of a successful writing initiative and offers methodological suggestions for conducting outcome assessments of writing initiatives.

A teacher should able to write as supporting element in learning activities implementation. Moreover, teachers also need to do research to improve the professionalism as a teacher. But right now, the culture of writing scientific papers among teachers remains low. Many efforts have been made by government to encourage the spirit of the teacher in writing as like training, but it was not enough if they had done the training but do not directly apply, then training is something useless. So, they need a habituation to write as early as possible before being a teacher as performed by An Najah Islamic Boarding School for Higher Student Purwokerto. They will be accustomed to writing as early as they can. This research can be categorized as field research while the strategy is cross sectional study case. This article reports on the results of a study aiming to investigate whether systemic functional linguistic genre pedagogy (SFL GP) can help students develop their writing ability in English and the students’ opinions about the teaching program using SFL GP. The study was conducted in one semester with 19 student teachers taking a writing course on argumentative texts, in the English Department at a state university in West Java, Indonesia. The texts in focus were Exposition, Discussion and Response to Literary Works, but in the interests of space, the article will centre around Exposition. The study used a qualitative case study research design with data collected from participant observations for 16 meetings, analysis of students’ texts collected over the program, and questionnaires distributed at the conclusion of the program. The results indicate that despite some aspects that still need improvement, SFL GP can generally help students develop their writing ability. Observation data show students’ writing skill improvement supported by students’ texts which depicts good control of the schematic structure and linguistic features of the texts in focus. Finally, questionnaire data reveal students’ consciousness of improved writing skill and positive responses to each activity in the program. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that SFL GP be implemented in other contexts in Indonesia and other countries.
