The current study was designed to investigate the effect of Parthenium hysterophorus L. methanol extract on Ageratum conyzoides L., Oryza sativa f. spontanea (weedy rice) and Cyperus iria L. in glasshouse condition. Here, Parthenium hysterophorus methanol extract at 20, 40, and 60 g L−1 concentrations was applied on the test species to examine their physiological and biochemical responses at 6, 24, 48 and 72 h after spraying (HAS). The phytotoxicity of P. hysterophorus was strong on A. conyzoides compared to weedy rice and Cyperus iria at different concentrations and exposure times. There was a reduction in photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration, chlorophyll content and carotenoid content when plants were treated with P. hysterophorus extract concentrations. Exposure to P. hysterophorus (60 g L−1) at 24 HAS increased malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline content by 152% and 130%, respectively, in A. conyzoides compared with control. The activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD)) were also increased in the presence of P. hysterophorus extract. Present findings confirm that the methanol extract of P. hysterophorus can disrupt the physiological and biochemical mechanism of target weeds and could be used as an alternative to chemical herbicides.

Este estudo teve por objetivo realizar a secagem dos rizomas de Curcuma longa L. aplicando modelagem matemática, determinou a atividade antimicrobiana e a toxicidade do óleo essencial (OE) obtido após o processo de secagem aplicado. O material vegetal coletado foi submetido a estufa convectiva de secagem a temperatura 45 °C. Modelos matemáticos foram aplicados para representar o processo de secagem e análise estatística realizada utilizando o software statistica 10. Os OE's foram obtidos através da técnica de hidrodestilação e a atividade antimicrobiana pelo Método de Difusão de Disco e Diluição em Caldo frente a Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa e Salmonella sp. Para o teste de toxicidade, foi aplicado o bioensaio de Artemia salina. Através dos resultados obtidos foi possível determinar que o modelo matemático de Logarithm foi o que melhor se encaixava nos dados experimentais. O OE apresentou atividade bactericida frente a todos os microrganismos testados. O ensaio de toxicidade comprovou a toxicidade do OE com uma CL50 superior a 250 mg/L. Os resultados obtidos comprovam o potencial necessário para a aplicação do OE dos rizomas de C. longa como antimicrobiano, sendo ainda não tóxico frente a organismos não-alvo.

A partir da atividade antibacteriana in vitro, predeterminada em doze plantas com indicativo etnográfico condimentar, testou-se este atributo in loco no modelo caldo com frango cozido. Primeiramente, procedeu-se ao treinamento de 10 avaliadores, segundo a legislação vigente quanto ao Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido, oportunizando conhecimentos prévios sobre as plantas salsa (Petroselinum sativum), manjerona branca (Origanum X aplii), manjerona preta (Origanum majorana), manjericão (Ocimum basilicum), sálvia (Salvia officinalis), tomilho (Thymus vulgaris), anis verde (Ocimum selloi), alfavaca (Ocimum gratissimum), alho nirá (Allium tuberosum), alho poró (Allium porrum), cúrcuma (Curcuma longa) e pimenta dedo-de-moça (Capsicum baccatum). Realizou-se, através da adição individualizada desses condimentos ao caldo com frango cozido, um Teste de Aceitação tipo escala hedônica, selecionando, dentre os doze condimentos, quatro deles que se destacaram sensorialmente, a pimenta dedo-de-moça, o alho nirá, o alho poró e o tomilho. Foi feito, então, um Teste de Aceitação de concentrações denominadas pequena, média e grande destes quatro condimentos, para determinação da intensidade sensorialmente melhor aceita. As quantidades eleitas (0,5 g de pimenta dedo-de-moça, 15 g de alho nirá, 15 g de alho poró e 5 g de tomilho) foram acrescidas ao caldo com frango cozido, sendo estes desafiados frente a Escherichia coli (ATCC 11229) em concentração final de 10 UFC mL-1, limite tolerado pela legislação, tendo como grupo-controle o caldo com frango cozido sem condimentos. O crescimento bacteriano foi aferido a cada duas horas após a inoculação, até completar 24 horas de confronto, utilizando-se meio seletivo para coliformes termo-resistentes e incubação constante a 25ºC em DBO, sendo atribuídos valores arbitrários às variações logarítmicas de crescimento. Comparados ao controle, todos os tratamentos condimentados apresentaram, individualmente, atividade antibacteriana significativa, mesmo que sem significância quando comparados entre si. Contudo, em relação ao tempo de início da atividade antibacteriana, destacou-se a pimenta dedo-de-moça, enquanto que, em relação ao prolongamento dessa ação no tempo, destacou-se o alho nirá. As 12 plantas condimentares em estudo tiveram atestada a sensorialidade, sendo que as quatro plantas com destaque tiveram a atividade anti-coliforme termo-resistente comprovada in loco. Diferentes condimentos vegetais foram capazes de fornecer qualificação sensorial e sanitária em caldo com frango cozido, em condições domésticas de manuseio.

Scytonema schmidtii,a cyanobacterium was isolated from the collected soil samples from different locations of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra state (India). Identification was carried out using morphological variation and taxonomical approaches according to Desikachary (1959) and Prescott (1962) .The axenic culture of Scytonema schmidtii was obtained by using the method recommended by Bolch and Blackburn (1996). The isolated Scytonema schmidtii was grown autotropically in BG-11 medium as described by Rippka et al.,(1979) and incubated at 30±2°c.After 25 days, biomass was harvested by filtration through double layered muslin cloth and dried using air blower. The biomass of this Scytonema schmidtii species was used for the assessment of antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Micrococcus flavus and Proteus mirabilis. The antibacterial activity was studied by disc diffusion method (Anonymous,1996).Methanol extract of Scytonema schmidtii showed the activity against all the tested bacterial strains.Maximum zone of inhibition (23±1.9 mm) was recorded with methanol extract of Scytonema schmidtii.

The antibacterial activity of methanol, ethanol, chloroform, and hexane extracts of the leaves of Himalayan gymnospermous plantGinkgo bilobaL. was assessed against five animal and plant pathogenic strains (Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Erwinia chrysanthemi, and Xanthomonas phaseoli) employing disc-diffusion and broth-dilution assays. The methanol extract showed the highest activity (zone of inhibition of 15–21 mm) followed by ethanol (14–19 mm), chloroform (15–20 mm), and hexane (14–19 mm) extracts at 250 μg/mL. A minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 7.8 μg/mL was found for the methanol extract against most of the pathogens tested.

In vitro antioxidative and anti-lipid peroxidative properties of aqueous and methanol extracts of Ageratum conyzoides leaves were studied in controlling erectile dysfunction caused by oxidative stress. Methanol extract gave a significantly (P ˂ 0.05) higher content of total phenolic (61.4 mgGAE/g), total flavonoid (42.2 mgQE/g), ascorbic (10.1 mgAAE/100g) and phosphomolybdate (45.8 mgAAE/g) than the aqueous extract. The result showed that the extracts have high antioxidant activities. However, the methanol extract showed a higher DPPH and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activities over aqueous extract but the aqueous extract had a higher reducing power. The methanol extract exhibited a greater inhibition against lipid peroxidation induced by Fe2+ in rat pancreas and penile tissue homogenate exemplified by their least IC50 (94.21 μg/ml in pancreas) and (75.95 μg/mL in penile tissue) while in rat brain homogenate the aqueous extract exhibited a greater inhibition against lipid peroxidation induced by Fe2+ with least IC50 of 91.74 μg/mL. Hence, these extracts can be used as a potent natural antioxidant against free radicals and as a natural source of combating erectile dysfunction caused by oxidative stress. The crude methanol extract of Jatropha curcas leaves exhibited activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Mycobacterium phlei, Candida albicans, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes but was inactive against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In a bioassay-directed fractionation, two new phorbins were isolated and analysed by spectroscopic methods. Isolate 1 was characterized as an analogue of pheophytin b with a phytyl moiety containing three double bonds which are at positions P2/P3, P6/P7, and P10/P11. Compound 2 was characterized as methyl pheophorbide a with 132-OH and 17- and 171-CH3 moieties. It is active against Serratia marcescens.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji daya hambat dari ekstrak metanol beberapa jenis porifera terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri E. coli dan S. aureus. Pengujian aktivitas antibakteri menggunakan metode Kirby-Bauer, yaitu dilakukan dengan mengukur zona hambat di sekeliling cakram kertas. Ekstrak Haliclona sp dapat menghambat pertumbuhan S. aureus pada konsentrasi ekstrak 30%, 60% dan 90% dengan hasil pengukuran diameter zona hambat 13.50 mm, 20.67 mm dan 27.33 mm; serta menghambat pertumbuhan E. coli dengan diameter zona hambat 10.08 mm, 12.83 mm dan 14.17 mm. Daya hambat ekstrak Agelas sp terhadap S. aureus menunjukkan diameter zona hambat 8.33 mm dan hanya menunjukkan pada konsentrasi ekstrak 90%, sementara daya hambat ekstrak Agelas sp pada konsentrasi 30%, 60% dan 90% terhadap E. coli menunjukkan diameter zona hambat sebesar 7.67 mm, 10.17 mm dan 14.17 mm. Daya hambat Spheciospongia sp terhadap S. aureus dan E. coli hanya terlihat pada konsentrasi ekstrak sebesar 90% dengan diameter zona hambat adalah 8.42 mm dan 8.75 mm. Berdasarkan hasil yang diperoleh, dapat disimpulkan bahwa ekstrak Haliclona sp memiliki potensi aktivitas antibakteri yang dapat digunakan sebagai bahan dasar pembuatan obat antibiotik.This research aimed to test the inhibition capabilities of methanol extract from several kinds of Porifera on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus growth. The antibacterial activity test using the Kirby-Bauer method, which delivered by measuring the inhibition zone around paper disc. The extract of Haliclona sp can inhibit the S. aureus growth at 30%, 60% and 90% of extracts concentration with the measurement of inhibition zone diameters are 13.50 mm, 20.67 mm and 27.33 mm; also inhibit the E. coli growth with inhibition zone diameters are 10.08 mm, 12.83 mm and 14.17 mm. The inhibition capability of Agelas sp extract on S. aureus shows that the inhibition zone diameters is 8.83 mm and only appear at 90% of extracts concentration, meanwhile the inhibition capability of Agelas sp extract at concentration 30%, 60% and 90% on E. coli shows diameters of inhibition zone are 7.67 mm, 10.17 mm and 14.17 mm. The inhibition capability of Spheciospongia sp on S. aureus and E. coli only occurred at 90% of extracts concentration with inhibition zone diameters 8.42 mm and 8.75 mm. Based on the results, it can be assumed that extracts of Haliclona sp has a potential antibacterial activity that can be used as a basic ingredients for antibiotic medicine.

The antimicrobial potential of cranberry hydro alcoholic extracts (CrE) was evaluated against Escherichia coli isolated from women with urinary tract infection (UTI). CrE was diluted based on the percentage of proanthocyanidins (PACs) in extract powder for final concentrations: 1.26%; 2.52%; 3.35%, 5.03% and 10.06%. CrE antimicrobial potential was evaluated by disk and well diffusion assays, and by in vitro direct action against E. coli. Antibacterial action was observed for all performed tests: minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 1.26% PACs per disk diffusion assay and 2.52% of PACs by well diffusion assay. The in vitro antimicrobial direct action against E. coli resulted 3.8 Log10 cycles reduction for a concentration of 5.03% of PACs. One of the isolates showed multi resistance to antibiotics. But it was also inhibited more than any of the antibiotic tested in well diffusion assay. Only for concentrations 1.26%, 2.52% and 3.45% the inhibition of Escherichia coli by cranberry extract was dose-dependent, i.e directly proportional to the concentration of PACs. The results indicate a inhibitory action high potential of CrE. However, more in vitro and in vivo analysis can be performed to fix which the best concentration of CrE capable of causing a real beneficial effect on UTI´s.
