Enthroning human being at the centre stage of the universe gathered momentum with the emergence of humanism. This human centeredness later on gave way to a more anthropological term, viz.: anthropocentrism which considers Man as the Supreme Being. The anthropocentric point of view has created an ecological imbalance on our Earth. To ensure a harmonious coexistence of human beings and animals it is imperative to go beyond the narrow anthropocentric paradigms. A non- anthropocentric view which gives space, accepts and acknowledges the differences of other beings is to be developed. The present paper attempts to make a study of Daniel Defoe‘s Robinson Crusoe, Life of Pi directed by Ang Lee and Instinct by Jon Turteltaub to focus on the basic precepts of humanism, anthropocentrism and non-anthropocentrism in the select narratives.

Summary: Reflecting on the role humans take into nowadays society, should be of interest in all our social reflections, even for those that refer to the field of law. Any human indifferent and unconscious of the social role that he ought to play within society, as a member of it, is an irresponsible human detached from everything that surrounds him, regarding matters and other humans. Trying to isolate in an irresponsible, passive and comfortable attitude, means, after all, denying oneself, denying our nature, as the social being every human is. This is the reflection that this academic work entitles, the one made from the point of view of the Italian philosopher Rodolfo Mondolfo. From a descriptive development, starting from this renowned author, I will develop ideas that will warn the importance that human protagonism have, in this human product so call society. From a descriptive development, from this well-known author, I will be prescribing ideas that will warn the importance of the protagonism that all human beings have, in that human product that we call society. I have used the descriptive method to approach the positions of the Italian humanist philosopher and, for my assessments, I have used the prescriptive method from an eminently critical and deductive procedural position. My goal is to demonstrate, from the humanist postulates of Rodolfo Mondolfo, the hypothesis about the leading, decision-making and determining role that the human being has within society. I understand, to have reached the demonstration of the aforementioned hypothesis, because, after the analyzed, there is no doubt, that the human being is not one more existence in the development of societies; its role is decisive in determining the human present and the future that will house the next societies and generations of our historical future.

Abstract The term vulnerability is en vogue, both in theology and in mission studies. This contribution systematically analyses the concept and phenomenon of vulnerability and discusses its different aspects; namely materiality and embodiment, pain and suffering, and resilience and resistance. From a Christian theological point of view, these aspects of vulnerability resonate with key theological questions that lead to a closer look at the Christologies of Jürgen Moltmann, Jon Sobrino, and Graham Ward. The guiding questions are: How can we speak about the vulnerable human being in his or her relationship to Jesus Christ, the Son of God made flesh? And how is it possible vice versa to speak about the incarnated God in light of the vulnerability of all human beings? Finally, the argument culminates in a plea for a vulnerable theology in a wounded world.

The novelist, Joyce Cary, appears to accept human being as free, who is apparently captive, his footing on which his art of novel writing is constructed. It is his one of the inspirations and his source of creation. He projects society as the background of his novels. Protagonists and other characters find themselves at odds with the society. A consistency between free and captive has been very much schematic throughout the novels presenting his point of view. Consequences start moving from intuition to concept. His characters are flat as well as round ones. Moreover, they are free as well as captive. They are peopled with two types of human beings who may be termed as the captive and the free. However, they are real. They are humane. The wholeness of objectivity is very much schematic. The artist in Cary tries to cut deep through the encrustations of facts and life to get at the heart of the truth and reality. However, reality, human reality, appears to be perceptive. Hence, this research paper tries to investigate the purpose of the reality of society in general and reality of human beings in particular. It aims at finding out what reality is for the novelist in question. How the novelist perceives it. In addition, how the different characters of his novels do experience the reality of life?

Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap kritik atas modernitas dalam novel Bilangan Fu karya Ayu Utami. Dengan memanfaatkan naratologi Tzvetan Todorov, dapat dipahami aspek verbal Bilangan Fu, yaitu sudut pandang, pencerita, dan tuturannya. Berdasarkan penceritaannya, novel ini merupakan novel polifonik, karnivalistik, sekaligus metafiksi. Berdasarkan kontennya, novel ini menghadirkan sejumlah kritik atas modernitas, khususnya berkaitan dengan semangat modernitas yang cenderung melihat segala sesuatu secara monodimensional, hanya ada satu kebenaran, dan liyan diabaikan. Bilangan Fu merupakan novel yang merefleksikan zamannya. Novel ini berhasil menyegarkan cara pandang masyarakat Indonesia, atau setidaknya menghadirkan sesuatu untuk dipikirkan dan dipertimbangkan kembali, berkaitan dengan diri, lingkungan, dan semesta raya. Novel ini mengembalikan manusia ke hakikatnya, yaitu kemanusiaan. Abstract: This article aims to reveal criticism on modernity in Ayu Utami’s novel Bilangan Fu. Tzvetan Todorov’s theory of narrative provided a framework to understand the novel’s verbal aspects, which are point of view, narrator, dan its voice. Based on its narrative, this novel is polyphonic, carnivalistic, and metafictional. Based on its content, it presents criticism on modernity, particularly on spirit of modernity that tends to see everything in monodimensional; there is only one truth, and the other is ignored. Bilangan Fu is a novel that reflects its time. It successfully refreshes the perspective of Indonesian society, or at least brings something to think about, related to the self, environment, and the universe. In the end, it brings back human being to their core, their humanity. Key Words: novel; point of view; narrator; criticism; modernity

Allah (swt) has elevated man to the highest position in all creation, and bestwed upon him the bounty of reason and knowledge. An in depth study of knowledge itself reveals that, there are two forms and ranks of knowledge in the universe; one is the divinely revealed instintintive level of awareness about reality, and the other is the earned and learned behavoiur based upon knowledge, that is gained through urge, effort and experience. Human beings, apart from the innate divine blessing of knowledge, learns through sense experience, reason and intuitive thinking. The higher form of knowledge is divinely transmission through revelation to the Prophets. The heavenly revealed knowledge has been preserved by human being in the form of Sacred Books; especially a body of knowledge about reality in the form of religion, namely in the Holy Bible and the Holy Qur’an.

In the article the author analyzes the phenomenon of Russian cosmism and shows its difference from other possible varieties of cosmism. The author understands Russian cosmism as the idea of extending the definition of the universe by the human beings. A human being doesn’t simply have his place in history, on the Earth and in space, but also broadens it by means of his material and spiritual actions. The idea of the world broadening was popular among Russian naturalists in the 19th and the 20th centuries. The most prominent figures among the Russian cosmism followers were N.F. Fedorov and K. E. Tsiolkovsky. The author distinguishes three directions in the history of Russian cosmism – religious, natural-scientific and artistic-poetical. According to the author, only after Gagarin’s space flight the idea of Russian Icaria transferred itself into Russian cosmism. The article studies the sources of Russian cosmism and explains the meaning of anthropocosmism. The author arrives at the conclusion that Russian cosmism offers its own approach to solving modern global problems that differs from the ideas in the reports to the Roman club.

Critical understanding of Western idea of human personality reveals a lot of weaknesses. It reveals individualistic and anthropocentric tendency which is the reason for unpleasant relationship between man and fellow man and man and the environment. This kind of thinking has led Western environmental ethicist to now propound theories towards communitarian stand, for instance; deep ecology, land ethic, eco-feminism to mention a few. Enyimba, Maduka holds a radical point of view from many African communal philosophers. Maduka holds that a person is human because he/she is worth more in quality and essence than other beings and things. Such thinking has been the underlying rationale behind man’s overexploitation of nature. The thrust of the essay is to look at the basic tenets of Madukakism as the philosophy of being human in Africa. This paper agrees with the idea of Madukaku that humanity is at the centre of the universe, but differs from its individualist assumptions. In African ontology, the hierarchy of beings, God, lesser deities and ancestors are above human, If this is the case then man is not supreme and cannot be ‘the measure of all things’. Hence this paper rejects Maduka’s postulation of human being as supreme, because even within African environment there are some trees, rivers, mountains etc that are considered sacred and its therefore considered a taboo to toy with them. To this, no matter how highly placed man is, he is not allowed to touch nor exploit them, without dare consequence, which clearly shows that man is not the measure of all things but is in a complimentary state with other beings in African belief system.

Education is important aspect for human beings. Education can be done formally or informally. In Buddhist point of view, education should be done as long as the life of a person. It is done throughout the samsaric journey until someone becomes an enlightened one, becoming a non learner (asekha). In the modern education, various facilities are provided to produce a very good graduate. However this easy access is challenged by the emergence of bad habit of students i.e. copying and pasting data from internet without doing analysis.The solution to this bad habit has to be found because it will cut off the analytical thinking of students. The lack of analytical skill makes student become unproductive in many aspects. As the result, they are not having the ability to think comprehensively, and not having the ability to raise a new idea or to solve the problem correctly. That is why many students are just keeping silent in the class without able to rise or to answer question Human is a being with a higher mind than animal. Human being is called manussa in Pali term. Literally, manussa means “higher mind”. It means that a human being has special ability to understand matter relating to the past, present and future by comparing and contrasting well. This definition also indicates that the mind of human can be developed until its maximum capacity, intellectually or spiritually. This article try to explore some alternatives ways in managing modern education to obtain maximum intellectual and spiritual goal for millennial generations.

<p><em>God created the universe and its contents is for the benefit of all beings present in nature, especially humans because man is the supreme being who is given the mind, the mind to utilize this world wisely for the sake of the need and the sustainability of life for all beings. Man, nature and environment are a perfect unity of God’s created ecosystem, interdependence among each other is a natural cycle. Hinduism since ancient times has participated in maintaining balance among other living things. The study was designed with a qualitative approach to obtain discoveries that could not be achieved by using statistical procedures or other means of quantification. All forms of disasters and calamities that occur can not necessarily be avoided, but we as human beings who think can still reduce the disaster if we are conscious and able to maintain the environment well, and contribute in the form of mind, action to reduce the greed of natural exploitation in an effort equating nature and other creatures, in order to preserve the natural ecology.</em><em></em></p>

As the Taoist culture contains extremely abundant thoughts about ecological protection, this paper is intended to discuss the thoughts of ecological protection manifested in Taoist culture only from the universe philosophy view of “the law of the Tao is its being what it is”, the life care view of “attaching importance to life and cherishing life”, the ecological balance view of “nature, earth & human beings living in peace with each other”, the harmonious universe view of “nature & human being in harmony”. The discussion expects to enlighten human beings to absorb valuable ecological wisdom from Taoist thoughts about ecological protection and accomplish their transformation and recreation in modern sense.
