Mineral resources and mining are the pillars of development in any country. Mining development must be performed based on the pillars of sustainable development to prevent the damage to water, soil, air, plants, wildlife and social life of local communities by exploiting valuable minerals and economic development. Lack of attention towards the pillars of sustainable development in the long-term can turn into serious damages to environment and social life of local communities. There would probably be needed to spend multiple times more than the added value earned by the mineral production in order to recompense the environmental and social damages caused by unauthorized mining. Therefore, from the late 2001 the beginning of mining activities in the Bauxite mine of the village of Tash has caused challenges for the environment, natural resources and social issues. Some of the most important of which are loss of water reserves in the region, the pollution of ground and surface waters, soil erosion, susceptibility of the region to dust, loss of vegetation and rangelands, the endangerment of wildlife, flooding due to inappropriate tailings depot. This paper addresses to the causes of these pollutions and how to stop further damages of the process.

An increasing global focus on sustainability has affected the jewellery industry by raising questions about its environmental and social impacts and ethics due to the negative impacts of gold mining. It is essential to consider the social aspects of mining activities on the socio-economic environment and the affected individuals in order to understand the sustainability of the jewellery industry in a better way. Nonetheless, this is a gap in the evaluation of the issues of jewellery in the other phases of the life cycle, observed in the literature. For these reasons, the goal of this study is to assess the social and socio-economic aspects of a piece of jewellery from the artisan’s point of view by considering the relationship between a piece of jewellery and the local community. The United National Environmental Programme/Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (UNEP/SETAC) Guidelines on Social Life-Cycle Assessment, the UNEP/SETAC Methodological Sheets and the Subcategory Assessment Method were implemented. The findings show that a piece of jewellery can play an important role in supporting the local cultural heritage by innovating the traditional product, and promoting educational activities related to the history of the product and the territory. Consequently, the local community with its historical background gives an added value to the piece of jewellery. Further research on this topic is desirable in order to improve the knowledge of this particular sector and to identify other social issues that can be involved in this product.

Contemporary researchers of local communities and human societies face a new and difficult task today. It is, on the one hand, related to the great interest in this topic and the difficulty of creating a new concept that would fully exhaust the scope of phenomena observed presently in local communities and human societies. On the other hand, the character of changes that have gained momentum in the first decade of the 21st century, and the description of their sources, become particularly difficult to describe and name. The present article is an attempt at an indication of the need of an evolution of perception on societal reality and the emerging new social issues. Contemporary paedagogy attempts to write about the necessity of awareness/ education related to the needs of establishment of local communities and the creation of bonds as a response to processes related to social life in times of globalisation. It is a fact that we are presently dealing with a change in the forms and character of local communities.

New Caledonia, a French overseas territory, is located in the southwest of the Pacific Ocean, less than 2,000 km from both the Australian and New Zealand coasts. This small archipelago (18,575 km2) presents the third largest nickel deposit in the world and, according to recent estimates, would have more than 25% of the world's nickel resources and about 40% of the world's oxidized mineral resources, together with the presence of cobalt, chromium and manganese. The mining areas, spread over the whole ‘Grande Terre’ (mainland), comprise about 250,000 hectares of scattered concessions shared by French and international world scale mining and metallurgic companies and a few other local small-scale miners.

To face the challenges of a “better way of mining”, fit the new regulatory requirements and improve mining social acceptability, the mining sector stakeholders decided to create a dedicated resource agency devoted to applied research and technology development in New Caledonia’s mining industry. Created in 2007, this unique public and private organisation jointly involves all New Caledonian’s mining companies, political and administrative stakeholders and various scientific research bodies.

Research has focused on three identified areas (technology and mineral resources, natural environment and social issues) to fill on-going gaps in fundamental knowledge, offer and adapt new technology that is relevant to the industry, develop methodology aids, manage knowledge transfer and upgrade practices on the ground. If action of CNRT has effectively added value to New Caledonian research, at the same time it permanently keeps in touch with industry.

A presentation of some of the flagships scientific programs will give an overview of the main achievements in the three research areas with a focus concerning works on asbestos. CNRT started working on the environmental asbestos hazard in New Caledonia since 2010. This public health area is being examined alongside the New Caledonian Geological Survey and the various industry initiatives, such as the Inter-Mine Environmental Asbestos Committee.

This article reveals the artwork produced by the Pangrok Sulap group titled Maphilindo. Pangrok Sulap is a group consisting of several very prolific works producing woodcut prints. This special study of printed artwork titled Maphilindo was chosen because it presents cultural and social issues. This work also illustrates the hope of cultural unity contained in the idea of Maphilindo unity, namely the countries of Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. The three countries involved in the establishment of Maphilindo ideas have an impact on the culture and social life of local communities. The artist uses printed art to give an idea and exposure to the public’s awareness of the issue. The author used Erwin Panofsky’s Theory of Iconography (1972) to decipher visual art elements centered by the works in print. Data consisting of formal elements is analyzed through three stages of analysis e.g. primary, preiconography and iconography meaning. Bumdes is a village business unit whose capital comes from village-owned funds . The goal is to float the village potential into an independent village. Thus it takes effort and strategic and appropriate tips to achieve that goal. The first tip is to establish a forum for the development of economic networks in this case is the establishment of BUMDES. Some of the things that can be done are: (i) development of human resources capability so as to provide added value in the management of village economic assets, (ii) integrating rural economic products so as to have good bargaining position in market network, (iii) (iv) strengthening village economic institutions, (v) developing supporting elements such as micro-credit, market information, technological and management support, economic infrastructure and communication networks as well as support for guidance and regulation.

Most histories of Catholicism in the United States focus on the experience of Euro-American Catholics, whose views on social issues have dominated public debates. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the Latino Catholic experience in America from the sixteenth century to today, and offers the most in-depth examination to date of the important ways the U.S. Catholic Church, its evolving Latino majority, and American culture are mutually transforming one another. This book highlights the vital contributions of Latinos to American religious and social life, demonstrating in particular how their engagement with the U.S. cultural milieu is the most significant factor behind their ecclesial and societal impact.

Subject. The article discusses Russia’s economy and analyzes its effectiveness. Objectives. The study attempts to determine to what extent Russia’s economy is effective. Methods. The study is based on the systems approach and the statistical analysis. Results. I discovered significant fluctuations of the structural balance due to changing growth rates of the total gross national debt denominated in the national currency, and the stability of growth rates of governmental revenue. Changes in the RUB exchange rate and an additional growth in GDP are the main stabilizers of the structural balance, as they depend on hydrocarbon export. As a result of the analysis of cash flows, I found that the exports slowed down. Financial resources are strongly centralized, since Moscow and the Moscow Oblast are incrementing their share in the export of mineral resources, oil and refining products and import of electrical machines and equipment. Conclusions and Relevance. The fact that the Russian economy has been effectively organized is proved with the centralization of the economic power and the limits through the cross-regional corporation, such as Moscow and the Moscow Oblast, which is resilient to any regional difficulties ensuring the economic growth and sustainable development. The findings would be valuable for the political and economic community to outline and substantiate actions to keep rates of the economic growth and sustainable development of the Russian economy.
