Thisresearch is to analyze and reduce the emission of carbon footprint around campus in order to build a sustainable campus for future generations. One of the most profound issue faced by the world today is the rise of temperature which is also known as global warming. The emission of GHGs has been an alarming issue in our world today which causes not only the rise of temperature but also disastrous natural disasters such as flood, hurricane, drought and many more. Like other developing countries, Malaysia have given its full support and cooperation in its attempt to achieve a sustainable development. In Malaysia, there are several policies and legislation developed to encourage sustainability in four major areas which are water and waste management, transportation, energy and building. The importance of higher education institutions such as universities should address the diverse needs of local societies and promote sustainability. Universities should also consider including sustainability into student’s education and program to promote the environmental issues which have been one of the highest concerns around the world. Therefore, the focus of this research is to analyze and reduce the carbon footprint for a sustainable campus. Hence, the aim of this research is to analyze the emission of carbon footprint throughout the campus such as traveling to class and to suggest alternatives that the student or staff can take in order to reduce the emission of carbon footprint around campus and to build a sustainable campus.

Problem setting. Environmental education and enlightenment in a rapidly changing world should become the goal and essence of new education, a tool to reduce tensions not only between society and the environment but also between peoples, an instrument of peace and mutual understanding. This is the sphere of international cooperation, where the unity of interests of the world community in the self-preservation of world civilization is most noticeable.Recent research and publications analysis. The objective, tasks, principles and philosophical understanding of the importance of environmental education, its essential and substantive characteristics are covered in the works of N. Anatska, G. Biliavskyi, V. Tanska, M. Drobnokhod, M. Moiseev, and others. V. Chervonetskyi, A. Bereka, A. Shumilova, A. Shevel, V. Krysachenko and M. Khylko studied ecological education as one of the directions of the formation of ecological culture. Conceptual principles of increasing the level of environmental education in protected areas are substantiated in the work of O. Mudrak. Peculiarities of activity of regional public eco-organizations in the realization of informal ecological education of youth were studied by O. Dukh, O. Halahan and I. Mykhaliuk.Highlighting previously unsettled parts of the general problem. The choice of our study is due to the contradiction in the need of modern society to take practical action to improve the quality of the environment, the development of an ecologically literate population capable of an ecologically centric approach in relation to nature, and the lack of a systematic approach to this process. A comprehensive approach to the organization of training of all subjects of environmental education will ensure that the population receives the greatest amount of necessary environmental knowledge and skills, regardless of age and professional differences.Paper main body. There has been carried out the analysis of the essence of such concepts as “environmental education” and “environmental enlightenment”. The principles, goals, objectives and structure of environmental education are substantiated. The necessity for systematic organization of continuous environmental education and enlightenment for sustainable development is proved. The role of environmental education and environmental enlightenment in the system of public administration is determined. Elements of the system of environmental education are given, which also include environmental enlightenment and self-education.Conclusions of the research and prospects for further studies. The domestic system of environmental education is fragmentary, unsystematized, does not have proper management of educational processes that would meet modern challenges. Traditional educational paradigms require a significant revision and introduction of innovative and most effective methods, techniques, forms, technologies for the formation of environmental education and improving the environmental culture of the population.Non-formal environmental education and enlightenment should become one of the priorities and strategic directions of the state environmental policy at both the national and regional levels, and receive appropriate financial support. The urgency of the topic does not cover all aspects of the problem of the continuous environmental education and enlightenment, as they require further development of cooperation between public authorities and local governments with numerous educational and public organizations that can provide environmental education services to the population.

The intensive use of environmental and natural resources to satisfy human needs has risked the potential of renewable ecosystems and caused environmental problems. In order to respond to the problems faced, the current economic system has been interrogated. In the response emphasizing that future generations have the right to benefit from natural resources, the sustainable development approach has come to prominence. It has been observed that the issues of sustainable development and sustainability have been intensely discussed by higher education institutions since the 1980s. Nowadays, humanity is increasingly focusing on the principles of sustainable development, which are becoming more and more important, and universities are acting as agents to promote these principles in society. Many universities are doing important work regarding environmental issues, but also social and economic issues, thus including the three dimensions of sustainability. This article highlights important concepts related to sustainable development, compares and contrasts the definitions of education for sustainable development versus environmental education. The aim of this study is to examine the need to create a universal tool for assessing sustainability and to incorporate it into the classification system of universities. Finally, it can be said that higher education institutions need to make more strenuous efforts to improve their performance in relation to the variables of environment, infrastructure, transport and education.

Purpose In recent decades, the concepts of sustainable development (SD) and sustainability have become a part of the everyday information flow. Is there real impact on students who have potential to become stakeholders and decision-makers? To be able to answer this question, the authors focussed on the following problems: whether the discourse of SD has any impact on students of economics concerning their knowledge of the environmental pillar of SD; and whether it has an impact on their individual value orientation towards the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP). Design/methodology/approach A group of 120 university students of economics programs from the Czech Republic was chosen for the quantitative research of this study. About a half of them have already encountered environmental education. The questionnaire included topics of environmental pillar of SD and revised NEP scale. Findings Using correlation analysis, the results show that the discourse of SD does have an impact on the students’ knowledge of the environmental pillar of sustainability and it also has an impact on their individual value orientation towards the NEP in general. The knowledge of the environmental pillar of SD is not significantly influenced by the study of a subject which included the topic of SD and its principles. Value orientation towards NEP is not significantly influenced by the study of a subject which, among other things, included the topic of SD and its principles. Research limitations/implications Findings should be accepted with the knowledge of the limited sample from one country, on the other hand, information flow – usual discourse of SD is global. Social implications There is positive NEP orientation among the students of economics – young women and men have pro-environmental attitudes. This can be considered as great unused social potential in higher education. Originality/value This study deals with knowledge of SD, environmental education and value orientation. It is broader concept taking into account the real social environment in terms of usual SD discourse and individual value orientation, not only direct influence of education on knowledge. The study rejected direct impact of the environmental education on knowledge and value orientation in terms of SD discourse among the students of economics. The findings bring several important questions regarding the effective forms of environmental education.
