The study focuses on exploring the parents’ understanding of their involvement in schooling processes based on the six typologies of Epstein. The categories of the study were based on the typologies of Epstein consisting of parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision-making, and collaboration with the community. Parent involvement in an Aceh school is a crucial issue which needs to be studied. This research provides an analysis of parents’ understanding of their involvement in schooling processes, what different kinds of ways parents/homes and school communicate between each other, and whose parents are frequently involved in schooling. There are several barriers parent involvement in schooling, such as work demands, reluctance to attend the school, lack of communication with the school, and parents’ perception of their involvement. The  reason  behind  parent  involvement  in  schooling  processes can  be  explained  with attribution  theory. The findings indicated that parent involvement in schooling processes in Aceh is low. In addition, the motivation of parents to be involved in schooling  processes was related  to  their  own  motives, such  as  merely  to  fulfill their  obligation  as  a  parent  in  rearing  the  children.[Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengeksplorasi pemahaman orang tua tentang keterlibatan mereka dalam proses pendidikan berdasarkan enam tipologi Epstein.

This article investigates school counselor involvement in partnerships using Epstein's six types of school-family-community involvement interactions (i.e., parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision-making, and collaborating with the community). Findings show more involvement in parenting and collaborating with the community interactions and reveal a new partnership interaction practiced by school counselors. Recommendations for school counselors and areas for future research are discussed.

This case study investigates the language learning experiences, both at home and abroad, of a male Japanese high school learner of English. The qualitative data consist of field notes taken in Japan and the United States, interview data, and a semi-structured diary. Proficiency data include an oral proficiency interview (OPI), an institutional TOEFL, a dictation, and a narrative recorded immediately following the study abroad experience. By examining dynamics at different levels of analysis, it is argued that gender played a significant role in shaping short-term and long-term language learning opportunities and outcomes. This case study contributes to the study abroad literature in two ways. First, it adds a case study of a Japanese male to the literature on the gendered experience abroad. Secondly, it allows us to investigate how language study at home and abroad differs for a single learner, and how gender contributes to these differences.

The aim of the study is to reveal the implementation of a partnership framework at Saudi kindergartens in accordance to the Epstein’s Model which is considered from the perceptions of Kindergartens’ female teachers. Analytical descriptive methodology was employed, and the study sample included 48 public kindergartens’ teachers and 44 private kindergartens’ teachers in Jeddah city, Saudi Arabia. The study tools included a questionnaire that was related to the six fields of Epstein’s Model including; parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision making, and collaborating with community. The results revealed that implementation of a partnership framework at Saudi kindergartens in accordance to the Epstein’s Model were overall average. There were no statistically significant differences between the means of implementing partnership’s frameworks in Saudi Arabian kindergartens with its six fields, which attributed to the specific type of Kindergarten (Public – Private). The significant recommendation of the study is formulating partnerships between community institutions and kindergartens to arrange recreational, educational and social programs after school hours, which would be beneficial for children and their families.

The ability to read is highly valued and important for social and economic advancement. This aspect is also one where parental involvement may be of help, aside from building active networks in the community. This study, therefore, determined the extent to which parents’ involvement affects their children’s reading ability. Using the descriptive-correlational method, parental involvement in parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision-making and collaborating with community was correlated with the reading ability of grade six students in F. Bustamante Central Elementary School, Tibungco District, Davao City. The parents displayed a mean moderate involvement in their children’s education while the reading ability of grade six students showed a frustration level in oral reading and silent reading. There was a significant relationship between parental involvement in education and reading ability of grade six students, indicating that the respondents’ parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision-making and collaborating with community are not guarantees that the reading ability of grade six students will be developed. Keywords: Language, Reading ability, parental involvement, descriptive-correlational design, Philippines

In this article elementary school site decision-making bodies (SDMBs) are examined from a critical theory perspective. Two sites are examined: one with a mandated school site decision-making body and another with a voluntarily established school site decision-making body. A case study format and naturalist methodology that includes semistructured interviews, nonparticipant positioned observations, focus groups, and document analysis are used. Findings suggest relatively no difference between mandated and voluntary SDMBs; parent participation in school governance defined by socioeconomic status (SES); principals as key to school governance implementation; participating parents as trustees of the status quo; and school site decision-making bodies as an ineffective reform strategy. Propositions for consideration and suggestions for adjustments in SDMBs are offered.

The objective of this case study is to analyze how two groups of parents, a group who have newly arrived in Macau from Mainland China and the other who have resided in Macau for more than three decades, interact with the class teachers at the levels of “two-way communication,” “supervision of children at home,” and “participating in decision making” in a secondary school. The findings will redound to the benefits of school leaders, teachers, and indirectly the parents in a sense that looking closely at the ethnic and cultural differences between parents can promote effective cooperation between parents and teachers.

Decision making under uncertainty is a crucial issue and most demanding area of research now a days. Intuitionistic hesitant fuzzy set plays important role in dealing with the circumstances in which decision makers judge an alternative with a collection membership grades and a collection of non-membership grades. This paper contributes a novel and advanced distance measure between Intuitionistic Hesitant fuzzy sets (IHFSs). A comparative analysis of the present distance measure with existing measures is performed first. Afterwards, a case study is carried in multi-criteria decision making problem to exhibit the applicability and rationality of the proposed distance measure. The advantage of the proposed distance measure over the existing distance measures is that in case of deficit number of elements in IHFs, a decision maker can evaluate distance measure without adding extra elements to make them equivalent and furthermore, it works in successfully in all the situations.

The shift to Emergency Remote Teaching and Learning (ERTL) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated online learning at home for South African (and other) students. Using a critical paradigm, qualitative approach and case study design, this study, underpinned by critical theory, used interviews, voice notes and text messages to generate data to explore how South African university students’ home contexts shape their experiences of ERTL. Using thematic analysis, the findings indicated that student learning at home was negatively impacted by poor internet connectivity, home responsibilities, cramped living conditions, lack of safety, and financial and psycho-social stresses. The findings exposed the lived realities of students’ home contexts, made more difficult through the pandemic. This study adds to the literature on student adaptation to learning in the pandemic within home contexts characterised by resource poverty and challenging psycho-social conditions.

Outside-in is an installation that utilises machine learning to reflect on systematic discrimination by focusing on the indefinite detention of Mexicans with Japanese heritage concentrated in Morelos during WWII. This algorithmic discrimination system tears apart four classic fiction films continuously within a projection room. The fragments are displaced and classified using machine learning algorithms. The system selects, separates and reassembles the fragments into new orders. It evokes the condition of being robbed of your right to be in the place to which you belong. The citizens detained during WWII were removed from their residence, their belongings were confiscated and they were placed in seclusion solely for having Japanese ancestry. Similarly, at present, data retrieving companies configure low resolution representations of ourselves from the snatched digital debris of our daily life. These pieces are reconfigured into archetypes and meaning is attached to them for massive decision making. We don’t have the right or means to know what these representations look like or what meaning has been attached to such shapes. It is a privilege reserved to the designers of algorithmic processes: they own this right and we the citizens own the consequences. The present article is a case study presenting the creation of Outside in: exile at home as an installation that utilises machine learning and reflects on this kind of systematic discrimination.
