scholarly journals Evaluation of Professional Self-Concept And its Relationship Factors: A study Among Nursing Students in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Iran.

Background: Professional self-concept (PSC) is an important issue concerning the nursing profession and is reflected as the key concept in nursing professionalism. Even though previous studies investigated this nursing concept and its related factors among nursing students, meanwhile, their results showed there is no consensus. Objectives: To assess professional self-concepts among senior nursing students and examine its relationship with gender and, Grade Point Average (GPA). Design and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 157 nursing students selected by a convenience sampling among senior nursing students in the seventh semester in January 2020, at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS), Iran. The data were collected using Cowin’s 36-item questionnaire of NPSC which measures nursing self-concept in six dimensions. Results: The age of undergraduate nursing students vary from 22 to 24 years old (22.58 ± 98). Two-thirds of the students were female (66%) and married (71%). The nursing students reported a total mean score of PSC was (161.1 ± 3.27). The highest mean score of the PSC dimensions belonged to communication (27.7 ± 1.17) and the lowest mean score was observed for self-esteem (25.52 ± 1.06).There was no significant difference between gender and total professional self-concept and its dimensions and also no relationship with GPA except for the staff relations subscale, (r= -.198, p<0.05) and leadership subscale (r= -.210, p<0.05) which was a negative and significantly correlated but the correlation coefficients were weak (<0.3). Conclusion: Given a moderate level of total professional self-concept and the lowest dimensions in self-esteem among nursing students, it is recommended that nursing students’s professional self-concept and its dimensions specifically in self-esteem, which can boost their nursing professionalism, be given more consideration.

Background: Identification of the role of factors such as self-esteem and self-efficacy and the investigation of their relationship among students can bring about improvement of educational planning and enhance the teaching outcome. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between self-esteem and self-efficacy among the students of medical sciences.Methods: The present study is an analytical-descriptive which was conducted as a cross-sectional study on 394 students of Fasa University of Medical Sciences in 2016. In order to collect the data two questionnaires were used namely, Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI) and Rogers Self-concept Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22. The researchers used descriptive and inferential statistics such as t-test, chi-square one-way ANOVA, and correlation to analyze the data.Results: The mean and the standard deviation of self-esteem scores of female and male students were 38.23±6.80 and 37.51±6.67 respectively. The mean and the standard deviation of self-concept scores of female and male students were 9.49±3.53 and 9.43±4.14 respectively. The mean of self-concept scores of students of different majors had statistically significant difference with each other (0.011), whereas there was no statistically significant difference in self-esteem scores among students with different majors (0.442).Conclusions: Considering the statistically significant difference in students’ self-concept scores in different majors, it is suggested that we take right approaches to the improvement and enhancement of individuals’ self-concept and the creation of positive feedback.

ABSTRAK Latar   Belakang : Peningkatan SDM keperawatan sejak berada di Institusi pendidikan perlu mengembangkan kemampuan soft skill seperti assertive yang berpengaruh terhadap konsep diri menjadi perawat profesional. Adapun salah satu komponen konsep diri adalah self esteem perawat yang dapat digambarkan sebagai informasi dan keyakinan bahwa perawat memiliki tentang tugas, nilai, dan perilaku untuk pengembangan nilai-nilai profesional. Tujuan:  Penelitian ini bertujuan mengatahui perilaku assertive dan Self Esteem pada mahasiswa keperawatan  di STIKes Pamenang Pare Kediri pada tahun 2020. Methode: Penelitian  ini  adalah analitik digunakan  pendekatan  cross  sectional dengan spearman-rho. Populasi adalah mahasiswa keperawatan 119 dan sample 40 dengan teknik random sampling. Adapun Instrument penelitian ini kuesioner baku adalah Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) dan Rosenberg Self Esteem (RSE). Hasil: Hasil penelitian ini adalah terdapat  hubungan signifikan yang cukup kuat dengan nilai korelasi positive antara assertive dengan self-esteem pada mahasiswa di STIKes Pamenang Pare, di karenakan mahasiswa keperawatan yang berperilaku asertif tinggi cenderung mempunyai harga diri tinggi, sehingga sangat berkaitan erat dengan kelancaran selama menjalani masa studi di pendidikan keperawatan yang menghasilkan lulusan perawat yang kompeten dan profesional. Kesimpulan: Self esteem merupakan sejauh mana individu menilai dirinya yang memiliki kemampuan, keberartian, berharga, dan kompetensi yang dapat mempengaruhi perawat bertindak profesiona sangat berkaitan dengan perilaku asertive. Sehingga semenjak di pendidikan perlu di siapkan pengelolaan assertiveness yang efektif untuk peningkatan low self esteem pada mahasiswa keperawatan. Methods: This study used analytic cross sectional approach with spearman-rho. The population nursing students were 119 and samples were  40 with random sampling techniques. This research the instruments were Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) and Rosenberg Self Esteem (RSE). Results: The results of this research was a significant and positive corelation between assertive and self-esteem in nursing students in Department of nursing Pamenang Health Institute Pare Kediri, because nursing students with high assertive category behavior tend to have high self-esteem category, so its were closely related to fluency while undergoing a period to study in nursing education that produces competent and professional nurse graduates. Conclusion: Self-esteem was the extent to which individuals assess themselves who had abilities, meaningfulness, worth, and competence that can influence nurses to act professionally were closely related to asertive behavior. <p><strong>BACKGROUND:</strong> Commitment to ethics usually results in nurses’ better professional performance and advancement. Professional self-concept of nurses refers to their information and beliefs about their roles, values, and behaviors. The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between nurses’ professional self-concept and professional ethics in hospitals affiliated to Jahrom University of Medical Sciences.</p> <p><strong>METHODS:</strong> This<strong> </strong>cross sectional-analytical study was conducted in 2014. The 270 participants were practicing nurses and head-nurses at the teaching hospitals of Peimanieh and Motahari in Jahrom University of Medical Science. Sampling was based on sencus method. Data was collected using Cowin’s Nurses’ self-concept questionnaire (NSCQ) and the researcher-made questionnaire of professional ethics.</p> <p><strong>RESULTS:</strong> The average of the sample’s professional self-concept score was 6.48±0.03 out of 8. The average of the sample’s commitment to professional ethics score was 4.08±0.08 out of 5. Based on Pearson’s correlation test, there is a significant relationship between professional ethics and professional self-concept (P=0.01, r=0.16).</p> <p><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> In view of the correlation between professional self-concept and professional ethics, it is recommended that nurses’ self-concept, which can boost their commitment to ethics, be given more consideration.</p>

Background and Aim: Musculoskeletal disorders are mainly prevalent among college students who experience direct contact with patients. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal pains among Rehabilitation, Dentistry, and Nursing students at Arak University of Medical Sciences in 2017-2018. Methods & Materials: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 538 students of Arak University of Medical Sciences were recruited using the convenience sampling approach. Variables included age, sex, body mass index, study field, hours of using smartphone per day, and nine symptom sites being neck, shoulders, upper back, elbows, low back, wrist/hands, hips/thighs, knees, and ankles/feet. The researchers assessed the musculoskeletal pain by using the Nordic questionnaire and demographic questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS V. 18. Ethical Considerations: The Research Ethics Committee of Arak University of Medical Sciences approved this study (Code: IR.ARAKMU.REC.1397.253). Results: In this study, 538 students (205 males and 333 females) were studied with Mean±SD age of 22.04±2.53 years old. The results showed that the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in the spine (neck 29.4%, upper 24.3%, and lower back 37.2%) was higher than in upper and lower extremities. Musculoskeletal pain in the shoulder, upper, lower back, and thigh were significantly different based on sex. Also, musculoskeletal pain in the neck and ankle, and foot were significantly different based on age (P<0.05). There was a significant difference between musculoskeletal pain of back and ankle based on smartphone use hours per day. Conclusion: This study suggested that rehabilitation, nursing, and dentistry students are at risk for musculoskeletal pain, especially in the lumbar, cervical, and upper back.

<p>Communication, as a key element in providing high-quality health care services, leads to patient satisfaction and health. The present Cross sectional, descriptive analytic study was conducted on 70 nurses and 50 patients in two hospitals affiliated to Alborz University of Medical Sciences, in 2012. Two separate questionnaires were used for nurses and patients, and the reliability and validity of the questionnaires were assessed. In both groups of nurses and patients, nurse-related factors (mean scores of 2.45 and 2.15, respectively) and common factors between nurses and patients (mean scores of 1.85 and 1.96, respectively) were considered the most and least significant factors, respectively. Also, a significant difference was observed between the mean scores of nurses and patients regarding patient-related (p=0.001), nurse-related (p=0.012), and environmental factors (p=0.019). Despite the attention of nurses and patients to communication, there are some barriers, which can be removed through raising the awareness of nurses and patients along with creating a desirable environment. We recommend that nurses be effectively trained in communication skills and be encouraged by constant monitoring of the obtained skills.</p>

Objective: Nursing professional self-concept is nurses' internalized values and beliefs and the manner they affect their thoughts and behavior. The questions of how nursing students see themselves and what qualities interest them are of great importance. The present study aims to determine the correlation between clinical performance and nursing students’ professional self-concept. Materials and Method: The present cross-sectional-analytical study was conducted on 86 nursing students at Jahrom universities of medical sciences. The study data were collected using a questionnaire which consisted of 6-Dimension Scale of Nurse Performance (6-DSNP) and Nurse Self-Concept Questionnaire (NSCQ). The data analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The nursing students’ clinical performance and professional self-concept scores were 2.94±1.45 and 5.46±1.11. Pearson correlation coefficient revealed a significant correlation between the students’ clinical performance and professional self-concept. Total 6-DSNP score were significantly related to two of the dimensions of NSCQ: Nursing care and communication (p<0.05). There was a relationship between academic year and professional self-concept total score (p=0.01, r= 0.26). Conclusion: The results of the study show that clinical performance and professional self-concept are related. These findings can be helpful to teachers, authorities at nursing colleges, and nursing managers. Applying techniques that will enhance students' professional self-concept are essential to improving their clinical performance.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.15(1) 2016 p.57-61

Background: Assertive behaviour and low self-esteem have been found to major problem in the nursing profession. Nursing students today are the backbone of professional nurses of tomorrow. In order to ensure competent and safe practice, it is necessary for them to be individuals with high assertive skills and self-esteem. This study was conducted to identify assertiveness and self-esteem among nursing students. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted among 202 Proficiency Certificate Level and Bachelor of Science in nursing students of Manipal College of Medical Sciences (nursing programme), Pokhara, Nepal during July/August 2015. Data collection was done by purposive sampling. Tools used were demographic proforma, Begley and Glacken Assertiveness behavior questionnaire and Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential sta­tistics chi-square and correlation coefficient. Results: The study revealed nursing students had moderate level of as­sertiveness and self-esteem. There is a significant association between assertiveness and level of study and residence. There is a significant as­sociation between level of self-esteem with level of study and residence and There is significant positive correlation (r= 412) among assertive­ness and self-esteem score with p value <0.001. Conclusion: It is concluded that majority of nursing students have mod­erate assertiveness and self–esteem. Nurse educators should take ini­tiation to improve high assertiveness and self-esteem of nursing stu­dents.
