Background: Assertive behaviour and low self-esteem have been found to major problem in the nursing profession. Nursing students today are the backbone of professional nurses of tomorrow. In order to ensure competent and safe practice, it is necessary for them to be individuals with high assertive skills and self-esteem. This study was conducted to identify assertiveness and self-esteem among nursing students. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted among 202 Proficiency Certificate Level and Bachelor of Science in nursing students of Manipal College of Medical Sciences (nursing programme), Pokhara, Nepal during July/August 2015. Data collection was done by purposive sampling. Tools used were demographic proforma, Begley and Glacken Assertiveness behavior questionnaire and Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential sta­tistics chi-square and correlation coefficient. Results: The study revealed nursing students had moderate level of as­sertiveness and self-esteem. There is a significant association between assertiveness and level of study and residence. There is a significant as­sociation between level of self-esteem with level of study and residence and There is significant positive correlation (r= 412) among assertive­ness and self-esteem score with p value <0.001. Conclusion: It is concluded that majority of nursing students have mod­erate assertiveness and self–esteem. Nurse educators should take ini­tiation to improve high assertiveness and self-esteem of nursing stu­dents.

Background: Despite the numerous functions of vitamin D, there are still billions of people worldwidewho have vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency, and the highest prevalence is in the Middle East, mostly females. Aim of The Study: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and behaviors of applied medical science female students regarding vitamin D. Participants and methods: A cross- sectional study was conducted at the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences- Umm Al-Qura University. An electronic questionnaire was assigned for (156) students from female section and chosen from an age group (18-22 years) to assess their vitamin D knowledge and attitudes. Data analysis was done using the Statistical Package of the Social Science (SPSS) version 20, using frequency and chi-square test. A p-value less than or equal to 0.05 was considered significant. Results: About 57% of the students were not aware that the overuse of sunscreen could block the ultraviolet rays from reaching the skin, thus decreased production of vitamin D. The overall knowledge of the students about vitamin D sources (fortified milk, mushrooms and eggs) was decent. Conclusion: the students had a good background of vitamin D functions, sources, and deficiency symptoms but wasn't reflected on their behavior, this gap between their knowledge and their lifestyle must be filled through health education for better health.

Abstract Background: Thalassemia is one of the most common life-threatening yet preventable congenital hemoglobin disorders especially in South Asian regions like Bangladesh. It has become a rising public health concern for Bangladesh as 6-12% of the population are carriers and many of them are unaware of it. The purpose of the study is to inspect the knowledge and attitude towards thalassemia among the general people of Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in eight administrative regions of Bangladesh between January and October of 2020. A self-administrative close-ended questionnaire was designed to collect information about thalassemia and socio-demographic characteristics. Pearson’s chi-square (χ2) test and One-way ANOVA were performed to assess the association between the demographic variables with knowledge and practice regarding thalassemia. A p-value <0.05 was considered significant.Results: Of the 1623 participants, only 44.7% (726/1623) had heard of thalassemia. The mean knowledge of thalassemia was scored 4.75 ± 2.05 out of a total possible score of 10. Half of the participants had no idea that thalassemia was not a transfusion transmitted disease. About 73.1% knew that blood tests are a diagnosis process to determine thalassemia. The urban residing participants had the highest (5.10 ± 1.99) and participants with primary education had the lowest (3.38 ± 1.37) mean score of knowledge. Participants' knowledge score varied significantly by marital status, living pace, literacy and occupation (p< 0.05). However, about 68.2% and 85.5% of the participants showed a positive attitude towards premarital screening of themselves or their family members and donating blood to thalassemia patients, respectively. Conclusion: The study shows that there is a need to disseminate the information on thalassemia since the knowledge gap is huge among people. These findings will assist the implementation of significant steps such as educational programs, health counseling, premarital screening, campaigning, etc. to increase the awareness of thalassemia.

Stroke is a condition where a part of the brain is suddenly disturbed which is caused by a lack of blood supply, which causes an inhibition of metabolic processes. As a result of a stroke affects the psychological function of the patient, so the patient feels his level of self-esteem decreases or is low. The role and support of families play an important role in the rehabilitation process to provide health services for stroke patients. The aim is to find out the relationship of family support with the level of self esteem (self-esteem) in stroke patients at the Royal Prima Medan Hospital in 2019. The design used a "cross sectional study" approach with a population of 2,690 people. Samples were stroke patients at RSU Royal Prima medan, as many as 25 respondents using accidental sampling techniques and questionnaires as research instruments. The test used is the chi-square test. The results of the study Based on the chi-square test found p value (<0.05) statistically shows that there is a relationship between family support and the level of self esteem (self-esteem) in stroke patients specifically there is a relationship between informational support (p-value = 0.009), assessment support (p-value = 0.003), Instrumental support is obtained (p-value = 0.009), Emotional support (p-value = 0.004) with the level of self esteem (self-esteem) in stroke patients. This research shows that good family support will positively impact the level of self esteem (self-esteem) in stroke patients.

Background: Self-medication could be risky behavior and has negative effects. While Over the Counter (OTC) drugs are available at drugstores, the behavior has become prevalent among the general population. Objective: This study aimed at surveying self-medication behavior among medical sciences students of Shiraz, Iran. Methods: A sample of 396 students from medical, paramedical, and health sciences disciplines were included in this cross-sectional study. They were asked to fill a questionnaire about their demographics and socioeconomic status, medication usage and self-medication in the last six months, information about the correct use of medication, and information about negative results of selfmedication. Data were analyzed using chi-square, t-test and logistic regression model using R statistical software. Results: Almost 72% of participants reported self-medication in the past sixth months. The main reasons included trust in their own diagnosis (59.9%), mildness of the disease (56.6%), and having previous experience about the disease (56%). Cough or cold (84.5%), headache (66.3%), and body pain (60.2%) were the most frequent diseases that led to self-medication. The majority of the participants (77.7%) reported they select their medicine on their own decision. Furthermore, self-medication was highly related to having medicine stock at home (OR=2.692), having less information about negative results of self-medication (OR=0.835), and more non-syllabus study time (OR=1.041). Conclusions: Although, medical science students have information about the treatment of illnesses, they should be more informed about negative results and side-effects of self-medication. They should also share their knowledge with society to decrease self-medication.

Introduction: Pharmacology is one of the basic science subjects included in graduate nursing programs (B. Sc Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing) under Tribhuvan University. Both these programs are being run at our institute. This article describes the evaluation of pharmacology course and teaching methodology at our institute by B. Sc Nursing (B. Sc) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BNS) students and also compares students’ views between these two nursing programs to facilitate pedagogical learning. Methods: At the end of the course of 2071-2072 BS academic year of first year nursing students of B. Sc and BNS programs, a structured teaching evaluation questionnaire was designed to obtain students’ view on pharmacology curriculum and lectures. Yates corrected Chi square test was applied whenever necessary and p value considered significant at less than or equal to 0.05.Results: Only 37% B. Sc and 60% BNS students responded that the lecture content was in accordance with the curriculum. Only 52% BNS and 97% B. Sc students found the course content to be relevant and useful. 68% BNS students responded that they have felt a lot improvement in their understanding of pharmacology subject as compared to just 23% of B. Sc students. Majority of the students preferred the LCD mode of presentation.Conclusion: There were minor differences found between opinions of two sets of students. Major need for improvement areas suggested in curriculum were course content not being clear and the objectives being ill defined. Similarly, in relation to facilitator, they have recommended to improve voice clarity.

Background: Stress and self-esteem are common issues that everyone has to cope with at some time in their lives and they could also affect other things going on in a person’s’ life. The objective of the study is to identify the stress and self-esteem among nursing students. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among B.Sc. Nursing students, Chitwan Medical College. The data was collected by us­ing structured questionnaire within 2 weeks. Obtained data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 16.0. Descriptive statistics (mean, frequency, percentage and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (chi-square and correlation) were used for data analysis. Results: Out of 116 respondents, 23.3%, 25.9%, 25.9% and 25.0% were from first, second, third and fourth year respectively. More than half i.e. 50.9% of the respondents had high stress. Respondents had faced higher (68.1%) in teacher related stress followed by peer stress 67.2% and self-inflict 66.0%. About 61.2% of the respondents had low self-esteem. There was higher stress in first year students then other. The fact is that as the academic year increases, students become more familiar to the learning environment and able to cope better. There was statistical significant as­sociation between stress among nursing students and habit of problem sharing (p=0.04). Conclusions: It is concluded that respondents have high level of stress and low level of self-esteem. Therefore, intervention for increasing self-esteem and decreasing stress should be conducted by the college administration.

Introduction: Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common psychiatric condition after childbirth. PD has adverse long-term consequences for the mother, the infant’s development and the family environment symptoms-the core symptom of sadness or low mood, as well as fatigue/sleep disturbance and irritability. The aim of the study is to determine the Knowledge and awareness about postpartum distress among the students of saveetha dental college. Materials & Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among the study population with a sample size of 100. A self administered structured questionnaire was prepared and consisted of 15 questions. It was circulated to participants through an online platform (google form). The statistics were done using SPSS software, chi-square test was used to check the association and P value of 0.05 was said to be statistically significant.The pros of the survey is that the students of different lifestyles and cultures were surveyed . Children and adults were excluded from the survey.  Simple random sampling method was the sampling method used to minimise the sampling bias. Results: Women during postpartum go through a lot of hormonal changes which lead to mood swings etc.They become very self conscious about their body .Mothers can also be depressed due to financial trouble, lactation etc.  Chi square test: p-value=2.98>  0.05 hence significant. Conclusion: In summary, this study demonstrated an honest level of data and positive attitudes towards women with postpartum depression. However, negative beliefs, stigma, and misconceptions still prevailed among the relations.

ABSTRAK Pendahuluan: Sikap caring adalah salah satu identitas profesi keperawatan yang berusaha ditanamkan oleh institusi pendidikan keperawatan melalui proses sosialisasi profesi. Namun, pada kenyataannya ditemukan sikap mahasiswa yang tidak menunjukkan sikap caring. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari tahu ada atau tidaknya hubungan antara sosialisasi profesi dengan sikap caring mahasiswa. Landasan teori yang dipakai adalah model sosialisasi profesi Hinshaw dan Theory of Caring Swanson. Metode: Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kuantitatif, menggunakan pendekatan cross sectional. Populasi penelitian ini adalah 45 mahasiswa angkatan 2011 Fakultas Ilmu Keperawatan Universitas x. Sample diambil menggunakan teknik total sampling. Data diolah dan dianalisis menggunakan chi-square. Hasil: Hasil yang diperoleh dari penelitian menunjukan nilai signifikansi hubungan sosialisasi profesi dengan sikap caring sebesar 0,019. Uji korelasi sosialisasi profesi dengan setiap kategori caring Swanson menunjukkan hubungan dua sub variabel caring yaitu “knowing” (p value = 0,001) dan “being with” (p value = 0,04) sebagai dua komponen yang sangat dipengaruhi oleh proses sosialisasi profesi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara sosialisasi profesi dengan sikap caring mahasiswa. Diskusi: Penelitian ini merekomendasikan agar penelitian selanjutnya dapat mengobservasi perilaku caring mahasiswa sehingga hasil yang didapatkan lebih akurat. The process begin since the students entering the faculty and improving as the time goes by. However, in reality, there are students who do not show caring attitude. The aim of this study was to find out if there is a correlation between professional socialization and caring attitude. Theoretical basis used is a model professional socialization Hinshaw and Swanson’s Caring theory. Method: The study used quantitative method with cross-sectional design. The population was 45 batch 2011 nursing students of Faculty of Nursing, University of x, using total sampling technique. The data analyzed using chi-square. Result: The significancy result of the correlation test between professional socialization and caring attitude is 0,019. The study also found that two sub variables of caring that are correlated with professional socialization are “knowing” (p value= 0,001) and “being with” (p value = 0,04). The results of this study indicate that there is significant relationship between professional socialization and sudent’s caring attitude. Discussion: This research recommends that further research can observe nursing student’s caring behavior in order to obtain more accurate results. Introduction: Considering the increase in Internet addiction rate, we tried to investigate the rate of internet addiction among medical students of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in Yazd in 2016. Methods: This analytic-cross-sectional study was performed on 350 students of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in Yazd. The data collection tool was a demographic questionnaire, and Yang's Internet addiction inventory. The questionnaire contains 20 questions, according to which the person is placed in one of four classes: normal, mild, moderate, and severe. After collecting the data, the data were entered into SPSS 16 software and analyzed using Chi-square and independent t-tests. The significance level was considered less than 0.05. Results: According to Internet addiction, students were 65% normal, 33.3% border lip and 1.7% were addicted to the Internet. The results also showed that there was a significant statistical relationship between the prevalence of internet addiction among students and sex, smoking, and registration in cyberspace (p<0.05), and there was no significant statistical relationship between the prevalence of internet addiction and marital status, place of residence and birthplace (p>0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of the study, it can be concluded that by increasing the awareness of medical students, the rate of Internet addiction in them can be minimized

Background: Adolescence is the period of life of a child who develops into adulthood. Adolescence is often characterized by transitions and changes. Facing his life in the future, adolescents need to have great confidence and hope in order to be able to rise from the difficult conditions and negative emotional experience experienced. For adolescents who live in the orphanage, not having a family or not living with their parents necessarily need to form a strong personality in terms of self-esteem, social cognitive and self-resilience to become adult human beings who are useful and responsible both for themselves and for the people in later.Objectives: This study was aimed to analyze "Resilience related to Self-Esteem and Social Cognitive among adolescents at Panti Asuhan Anak Harapan Samarinda"Methods: The design of this study was descriptive cross-sectional. Population in this research was adolescent amounted to 90 people with the sample of 73 respondents taken using purposive sampling method, where this research use inclusion and exclusion criteria. The statistical analysis used in this research was chi-square statistic testResults: Based on the results of the study, there was a significant relationship between self-esteem and resilience in adolescent (p value = 0,016 <α = 0,05), as well as there was significant relationship between social cognitive and resilience (p value: 0.000 <α 0.05)Conclusion: Majority of adolescent who have better resilience was due to better self-esteem and social cognitive. Beside influenced by these inner factors they were also supported from people around especially the caregivers at the orphanage.
