This article challenges the dominant notion of the ‘high-performing education system’ and offers an alternative interpretation from a Daoist perspective. The paper highlights two salient characteristics of such a system: its ability to outperform other education systems in international large-scale assessments; and its status as a positive or negative ‘reference society’. It is contended that external standards are applied and imposed on educational systems across the globe, judging a system to be high- or low- performing, and consequently worthy of emulation or deserving of criticism. Three cardinal Daoist principles that are drawn from the Zhuangzi are expounded: a rejection of an external and oppressive dao (way); the emptying of one’s heart-mind; and an ethics of difference. A major implication is a celebration of a plurality of high performers and reference societies, each unique in its own dao but converging on mutual learning and appreciation.

The evolution of digital technologies and the use of visual media in our everyday life highlights the necessity to educate visually literate individuals. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD, 2018) has launched the Future of Education and Skills 2030 that emphasizes that due to the digitalization into all areas of life, digital and data literacy are considered to be core foundations and being literate in this context requires the ability to comprehend, interpret, use and create textual and visual information in various formats, contexts and for diverse purposes (making meaning based on encoding and decoding signs/sign systems). The concept of visual literacy has been studied for several decades, however, it is a relatively new study area within a digital environment in Latvian media and education context. By bringing attention to the practice and reporting students comprehension and competency within the domain of digital visual literacy, the author reports the findings of a study that examined the competence of the sub-domain of visual literacy, applying Inquiry Graphic (IG) as a framework for the analysis. The purpose of this paper is to contribute quantitative and qualitative data to the domain of visual literacy amongst the Riga Art and Media school final year students and conceptualize visual literacy in the process of digital education transformation, proposing further research on academic practice and pedagogical tools to improve a person’s visual literacy and visual media competence in a digital environment.

Nowadays, different countries of the world have focused their efforts on raising the quality standards of their national educational systems. Among the priorities appears as one of the most relevant those related to digital literacy, understood as the skills that every citizen must develop to be considered literate in the 21st century. These competencies refer to the ability to use digital sources effectively. It is a special type of mentality or thought (Zapata-Ros, 2015). With this we try to explain the conception and the approach that we have regarding this type of literacy typical of contemporary societies, that is, computerized or known as societies of knowledge and information: a type of literacy that emphasizes cognitive aspects of work in digital environments compared to other definitions that conceptualize it focusing on the technical skills involved in the use of digital devices. In this sense, the present monograph considers that the previous absence of the development of such competencies makes it difficult to practice other abilities of computational thinking (PC) that involve the resolution of problems through the use of computer computers or in their absence. From the above, the concern and the object of reflection of this work is directed towards knowing if the selected Latin American countries, namely Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Mexico, have incorporated their own skills and abilities within their public education policies of the PC and what have been the strategies implemented to specify it. Finally, the text questions the conception about the PC that is deduced from the policies and strategies implemented, providing a conclusion that highlights the approaches to how the learning of the competences involved is conceived.

Institutions of higher learning serve as global catalysts for equitable educational systems as drivers of educator workforce that lead with social, emotional, and academic development (SEAD) practices. Colleges and universities are well-positioned to instruct on explicit social emotional learning (SEL) not only within pre-service programs of study, but have the unique opportunity to provide continuous education for in-service educators. This large-scale capacity to influence those who shape student experiences is more important today than ever before as schools seek safer, more inclusive campuses and digital learning environments with culturally responsive and respectful communication and interactions. The need for SEL skills across workforce sectors conflicts with the lack of SEL education in higher educational programs. To contribute to the body of literature around post-secondary SEL education, this chapter introduces new graduate-level SEAD courses and how they influenced pre-service and in-service teacher candidates.

Abstract Many things interfere with good binocular vision in nowadays modern digital environment: long periods spent looking at screens and switching between different digital devices at short distances. Vision-related or asthenopic complaints such as headaches, tired and burning eyes or blurred vision can be experienced by many people. Prescribing prismatic correction for fixation disparity can help to reduce these symptoms. A new, highly innovative method for measuring and correcting fixation disparity has been developed - HOYA EyeGenius®. The HOYA EyeGenius® method includes the unique examination procedures, pre-tests and fixation disparity measurements at far and near distances. The pre-tests allow to include patients with asthenopic complaints only with normal binocular vision and exclude cases with abnormal binocular vision. The main innovation of EyeGenius is based on direct conversion of the fixation disparity value into a prism amount. Therefore, the trial prismatic lenses are not used during the test. The use of digital devices makes this method interactive and minimizes the influence of the examiner.

Across the world, digital education is becoming more and more important. It is continuing to grow in popularity among learners and teachers alike and, against the backdrop of COVID-19, has proven vital to enable training and educational development to continue. The European Commission has introduced a new Digital Education Action Plan 2021-2027 that is designed to overcome challenges associated with delivering digital education. It builds on the work of the previous 2018-2020 Action Plan and incorporates learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea is for world class, inclusive and accessible education to be available digitally to students across Europe. This will involve fostering stronger cooperation between key stakeholders in Member States. Indeed, a strategic dialogue will be launched among EU Member States in order to develop a Council Recommendation on factors that will help facilitate digital education by 2022. A priority area is how digital education can be optimised in education, creating a digital education system that is high-performing and universally useful. A second priority area concerns the development of digital skills and competencies in learners and teachers alike, as well as ensuring online learning resources are relevant, interactive and user-friendly.
