The article discusses the life and work of the outstanding Sovietologist Richard Pipes, who was born in a Polonized Jewish family in Polish Cieszyn. After an adventurous trip to the United States in 1939 and 1940, he graduated in history from Harvard University and devoted himself to scientific work. For the next half a century, Pipes dealt with the historical and contemporary aspects of Russia. In his numerous publications, including more than 20 monographs, he emphasised that the Soviet Union continued rather than broke with the political practice of tsarist Russia. In his professional work, he thus contested views prevailing among American researchers and society. From the 1960s, Pipes was involved in political activities. He was sceptical about détente, advocating more decisive actions towards the Soviet Union. Between 1981 and 1983, he was the director of the Department of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union in the National Security Council in the administration of President Ronald Reagan. Although retiring in 1996, he did not give up his scientific activity. Pipes died on 17 May 2018; according to his last will, his private book collection of 3,500 volumes has been donated to the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

This analytical research is devoted to the life, but mainly creative path of the outstanding scientist of the XX century, zoologist and palaeomammalogist Vadym Oleksandrovych Topachevsky. Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, professor, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine – these are only formal titles without an in-depth analysis of his essence as a scientist, leader or just a person. His life motto – to leave the maximum possible trace in science, constantly filled the atmosphere of realization of his aspirations, expressed in publications, speeches at conferences, scientific and organizational affairs. The fundamental, truly academic directions of scientific research, which he always defended at different levels of the organization of academic science in Ukraine, have always been a priority in his scientific activity, to which Vadym Oleksandrovych aspired and always encouraged his students. The factual basis of his scientific work has always been the original materials and data obtained by him in the field. Those materials formed the core of scientific beliefs of Vadym Topachevsky and became an invaluable asset of the NMNH collections. The basics of morpho-functional analysis of fossil remains, which he elaborated in depth, are not simply the assertion of V. O. Kovalevsky’s principles; hypothesis about the phylogeny of cricetid-arvicolid branch among small mammals substantiated and confirmed by him is accepted among leading palaeomammalogists. Vadym Oleksandrovych successfully applied the approach of historical and faunal analysis of groups in characterizing the dynamics of natural processes of the late Cenozoic natural regions of eastern Europe. Morphology, systematics and phylogeny, palaeoecology and palaeogeography, stratigraphy and historical faunistics are those areas of Vadym Topachevsky’s scientific achievements that have been recognized today and are being developed by his students and followers. The scientific ideas of I. G. Pidoplichko, V. O. Topachevsky and O. L. Korotkevich with the active participation of museum staff (V. I. Svistun, Yu. O. Semenov, V. I. Bibikova, L. I. Rekovets) formed the basis for the creation of the exposition of the palaeontological museum NMNH NAS of Ukraine, built on a systematic and stratigraphic basis.

The Great Patriotic War left a deep mark in the history of our country. The higher school, in particular, Ivanovo agricultural Institute, did not become an exception. This article considers the main milestones in the institute’s life in the period of the war, shows the directions of its scientific activity, provides statistical data on the number of students, graduates and teachers of the Institute who worked and studied in it. The study showed that the university not only retained its enrolment, but also managed to increase it by opening a new veterinary faculty. Despite the difficult conditions of wartime, research activities of Ivanovo agricultural Institute have increased markedly, and the connection of university science with industry has become even closer. The war certainly affected the educational process as well. Some buildings were transferred to hospitals. Classes were held in two shifts. The period of study was reduced to three years. However, such difficulties did not affect the quality of graduates’ training and their importance for the country. The staff and students of Ivanovo agricultural Institute took an active part in the labor front, bringing the Victory closer by their activities. A special part of the article is devoted to biographical notes about frontline teachers, who fought bravely at the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. This is S.K. Voita - Director of Ivanovo agricultural Institute in 1939-1941, N.I. Belonosov - Rector of Ivanovo agricultural Institute in 1961-1974, V.K. Baluyev - Vice-Rector of the Scientific Department, Dean of the zootechnical faculty, I.P. Skurikhin - Vice-Rector on Educational and Scientific Work, Dean of the agronomy faculty and other teachers of the institute.

The paper attempts to analyze the key lines of the soviet historiography in the coverage of scientific and organizational activities of Zinaida Vissarionovna Ermoleva, as well as to characterize the degree of information content of publications on the problem. Z.V. Ermoleva (1898-1974) is a famous soviet medical scientist, a microbiologist and a bacteriogenic, a winner of the Stalin prize I degree, an honored worker of science of Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, a professor, a doctor of medical sciences, an academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. Her scientific and practical activities helped to save thousands of people from death. One of the most famous achievements of Z.V. Ermoleva was the invention of the first domestic antibiotic - penicillin-krustosin and the establishment of its industrial production in the harsh years of the Great Patriotic War. There were also numerous works on the study of cholera vibrions, interferon, lysozyme, various types of antibiotics and their combinations. Z.V. Ermolevas life as well as the history of her research activities are not well reflected in scientific literature. Unfortunately, no historiographical work has been published on the history of this amazing woman scientist. This historiographical review is not exhaustive; it should be perceived as a ground for a further study of her scientific work. Due to the specificity of the subject under consideration, the historiographical review is based on the problem principle.

In 2017 the Central Scientific Library of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (CSL FB RAS) in Vladivostok celebrates the 85th anniversary of its foundation. The publication uses rare materials from Vladivostok archives. CSL FBRAS formation was due to the enthusiastic orientalist A. V. Marakuev (1891-1955), who was its first Director (since 1932). Without a University degree, he educated himself the whole life, learnt Chinese and other foreign languages. During a trip around the world he lived in Harbin, where was engaged in scientific work. Arriving Vladivostok, Marakuev participated in opening the Far Eastern Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. At that time, he has published many articles on bibliography and economic geography of the Far East and Oriental studies. A. V. Marakuev awarded a degree of candidate of geographical sciences for a series of his works. In difficult years of repression, Marakuev could form a unique book collection, which base was the Oriental Institute collection in Vladivostok (1899-1920). Unfairly repressed A. V. Marakuev continued research activities in Alma-Ata.

The essay was written to mark the 25th anniversary of the Slavic Institute named after Jan Stanislav SAS (Bratislava). The Institute was founded to conduct interdisciplinary research on the relationships of the Slovak language and culture with other Slavic languages and cultures, as well as to study the Slovak-Latin, Slovak-Hungarian, and Slovak-German cultural and linguistic interactions in ancient times and the Middle Ages. The article introduces the main milestones in the formation and development of the Institute, its employees, the directions of their scientific work, and their significant publications. The main areas of research of the Slavic Institute (initially the Slavic Cabinet) cover linguistics (lexicography, history of language), history, folklore, cultural studies, musicology, and textology. Much attention is paid to the annotated translation of foreign religious texts into Slovak. A valuable contribution of the Institute to Slavic Studies is the creation of a database of Cyrillic and Latin handwritten and printed texts related to the Byzantine-Slavic tradition in Slovakia.

This article discusses the problem of studying the museum collection of Buddhist fine art in Kalmykia, as well as preserving the artistic heritage in the context of globalization of cultures. The author aims to create scientifically based information resources that include research on museum collections and exhibits. Information is the essence of museum business, which is based on research activities that combine the fields of acquisition, accounting and storage of funds, on the one hand, and on the other hand, communicative activities related to exposition and exhibition activities. The initial work of the museum is not only the preserved fund, but also information about the exhibits collected in the process of acquiring the fund and creating a museum collection catalog consisting of collections. The Zaya-Pandita Museum of Traditional Culture of the Kalmyk Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences stores and presents in the educational sphere multidisciplinary and largely unique information about the cultural heritage of the people. Based on a rich tradition of describing and cataloging objects of art, as well as using modern technologies and art criticism methods, it has become possible to prepare and publish a scientific catalog of the collections of the main fund of the Zaya-Pandita Museum of Traditional Culture.
