Using a visual semiotic analysis and qualitative interview of physically disabled individuals, this study evaluates the definitions and representations of beauty in the "Western" context in relation to, and contrasting portrayals of, physical disability in mainstream magazine advertising. The study finds a lack of representation of disability in advertising, with persistent implications that being physically different is associated with unattractiveness and, therefore, social undesirability. Directions for future research in advertisement portrayals, media reception, and the development of educational programs are presented.

This study investigated the process of adaptation to physical disability by the spouses of the disabled. Ten women, whose husbands had become spinal cord injured after their marriage, were interviewed using an open-ended questionnaire format. Sixteen major themes emerged from the content analysis of the interviews, which was performed using the phenomenological methods of Giorgi (1975) and Collier and Kuiken (1977). Discussion focuses on three areas: (1) the major themes, (2) six factors identified as influencing the outcomes of the adaptation process, and (3) the changes experienced by the participants. These were examined and discussed so as to illuminate the need for services for the non-injured family members. Implications of the study for rehabilitation psychology are discussed and suggestions made for future research endeavors.

Electric power wheelchairs (EPWs) enhance the mobility capability of the elderly and the disabled, while the human-machine interaction (HMI) determines how well the human intention will be precisely delivered and how human-machine system cooperation will be efficiently conducted. A bibliometric quantitative analysis of 1154 publications related to this research field, published between 1998 and 2020, was conducted. We identified the development status, contributors, hot topics, and potential future research directions of this field. We believe that the combination of intelligence and humanization of an EPW HMI system based on human-machine collaboration is an emerging trend in EPW HMI methodology research. Particular attention should be paid to evaluating the applicability and benefits of the EPW HMI methodology for the users, as well as how much it contributes to society. This study offers researchers a comprehensive understanding of EPW HMI studies in the past 22 years and latest trends from the evolutionary footprints and forward-thinking insights regarding future research.

Physically disabled persons can have sleep problems, which affects their mental health more than those in non-disabled people. However, there are few studies on the relationship between sleep duration and mental health targeting physically disabled people in South Korea, and existing studies on the disabled have mostly used data collected from convenience rather than nationally representative samples, limiting the generalization of the results. This study used data from the second wave of the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled (PSED, 2016–2018, 1st–3rd year). Participants included 1851 physically disabled individuals. The Chi-square test and generalized estimating equation (GEE) were used and the Akaike information criterion (AIC) value and the AIC log Bayes factor approximation were used to select sleep trajectories. This is the first study to elucidate multiple sleep trajectories in physically disabled people in Korea, and the relationship between sleep duration trajectories and self-rated depressive symptoms. People with physical disabilities who sleep more than 9 h have the highest risk of depression and need more intensive management as a priority intervention.

The advent of the small computer has provided a wide range of possibilities for offering new tools in the education of the severely physically disabled. The flexibility of the computer allows the limited motor skills of the disabled child to be amplified to expand that child's interaction with the world. This paper examines the use of the microcomputer in providing communication and environmental control in the personal lives of disabled individuals.

Persons with physical disabilities recorded under the auspices of the "Rumah Kasih Sayang" institution are 12 people. Ideally, the practice of worship should be carried out easily by everyone, but in fact there are still many people with disabilities who experience difficulties in implementing it, not even a few of them have left worship because of low religious-related understanding and lack of motivation from the community to include persons with disabilities. carry out daily worship obligations. These problems are experienced by people with disabilities, especially physically disabled in the "Rumah Kasih Sayang" in Krebet village. People with disabilities by the community are considered as groups who are no longer obliged to worship, they are sufficiently fostered with a variety of skills obtained from the institution, empowered by breeding goats from compensation without even being physically invited to pray together in the mosque or prayer room. Religious inclusiveness needs to be built between the community and the physically disabled, the community must be given an understanding that as long as the disabled person meets the taklif provisions, there is no privilege that disqualifies the obligation of worship for the disabled. The research questions are: 1) What are the implications of the fiqh guidance of worship for the disabled in the "Rumah Kasih Sayang" Krebet Jambon Village? 2) What are the implications of fiqh material for worship for the people of Krebet Jambon Village ?. To answer the formulation of the problem, the researcher used a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The results of this study are: 1) Deaf people can practice well the procedures of daily worship in accordance with the fiqh hospitality of disabled people while being able to carry out the obligation to worship together with the surrounding community. 2) People get new insights about fiqh worship for people with disabilities, changing their negative stigma towards disabled people and leading to the realization of an inclusive religious culture in Krebet Jambon Ponorogo Village.

The purpose of this study was to determine if identification and affinity for a storybook hero are functions of physical status. The similar groups (one disabled) aged 4 to 7 were randomly assigned to one of two storybook treatments telling of two boys' friendship. One version depicted both boys as nondisabled (control); the other depicted one boy as disabled (experimental). Questions were asked to determine whether the hero's disability affected the subjects' identification with or choice of him as a friend. Significant differences appeared between responses of two groups and again when sex was isolated as a variable. Disabled males identified less willingly with the disabled hero than did disabled females and preferred friendship of the nondisabled hero. Nondisabled males identified with the nondisabled hero but preferred friendship of the disabled hero while nondisabled females rejected him as a friend

In severe cases of physical disability intimate supportive seating may be required to provide maximum comfort, a good position for functional activities, improved respiration, relief of localized pressure, control of spasm, protection, or improved management. A service for providing such seating has been developed at Chailey Heritage. The seat is vacuum-formed from thermoplastic materials, having a soft non-absorbent foam for the liner and a hard semi-rigid outer shell. A mould is obtained by casting the patient using the vacuum consolidation technique and by recording the resulting impression using plaster-of-Paris. Nearly 200 seats have been made using the technique with a high rate of success.
