Nanogels can be called the new old§ objects of polymer chemistry. New because we have formulated the criteria for the assignment of objects to this group within the macromolecule-particle concept and developed the methods for their directed and controlled synthesis. Old because the application of these criteria to the earlier known systems allow us to surely classify them as nanogels. It is shown that this classification per se provides insight into the organization of their molecular structures and enables directed modification. This means a transition from the empirical control of the properties to molecular design. The current review presents a brief historical overview of densely cross-linked nanogels and their main synthetic routes and highlights the principles and approaches to the control of their structures and molecular-mass characteristics, application scope, and prospects for further development.

Nanoparticles (NPs) provide multipurpose platforms for a wide range of biological applications. These applications are enabled through molecular design of surface coverages, modulating NP interactions with biosystems. In this review, we highlight approaches to functionalize nanoparticles with ”small” organic ligands (Mw < 1000), providing insight into how organic synthesis can be used to engineer NPs for nanobiology and nanomedicine.

The immune modulating effects of selected herbs deserve careful studies to gain evidence-based support for their further development. We have been working hard on many items of medicinal herbs to gain insight into their immunomodulatory effects relevant to cancer treatment in particular, while infection control is not excluded. Nine of them have been selected to give the results of our exploration on their biological, particularly immunomodulatory activities. Since Hong Kong people especially favor one medicinal mushroom, viz. Coriolus versicolor, a number of clinical trials using Coriolus for cancer-related studies are included in this review. While immune modulation platforms are being built for relevant studies, a brief account on the research targets and related procedures are given.

The reduction of 1,4-diphenyl-1,4-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)buta-1,3-diene (1) (1,4-diphenyl- NUPHOS) with potassium in THF yields bis(THF)potassium 2,5-diphenylphospholide (2) which crystallizes with a chain structure. The metathesis reaction of 2 with the iodides of calcium, strontium, and barium leads to the formation of [bis(THF)calcium bis(2,5-diphenylphospholide)] (3), [bis(THF)strontium bis(2,5-diphenylphospholide)] (4), and [bis(THF)barium bis(2,5-diphenylphospholide)] (5). The reaction of M{P(H)SiiPr3}2 with diphenylbutadiyne in THF also leads to the formation of the 2,5-diphenylphospholides of calcium (3), strontium (4), and barium (5). The molecular structures of 2 to 4 are discussed. The environment of the metal atoms is very similar in all these compounds: The metal atoms show an η5 coordination to the phospholide rings forming a bent sandwich complex. The open coordination site is occupied by two THF molecules

AbstractIn wake of emerging applications of organotellurium compounds in biological and material science avenues, the current review describes their key synthetic methodologies while focusing the synthesis of organotellurium compounds through five ligand-to-metal linkages including carbon; carbon-oxygen; carbon-nitrogen; carbon-metal; carbon-sulfur to tellurium. In all of these linkages whether tellurium links with ligands through a complicated or simple pathways, it is often governed through electrophilic substitution reactions. The present study encompasses these major synthetic routes so as to acquire comprehensive understanding of synthetic organotellurium compounds.

AbstractNα-2-thiophenoyl-d-phenylalanine-2-morpholinoanilide (MMV688845, IUPAC: N-(1-((2-morpholinophenyl)amino)-1-oxo-3-phenylpropan-2-yl)thiophene-2-carboxamide) from the Pathogen Box® library (Medicines for Malaria Ventures, MMV) is a promising lead compound for antimycobacterial drug development. Two straightforward synthetic routes to the title compound starting from phenylalanine or its Boc-protected derivative are reported. Employing Boc-phenylalanine as starting material and the T3P® and PyBOP® amide coupling reagents enables racemization-free synthesis, avoiding the need for subsequent separation of the enantiomers. The crystal structure of the racemic counterpart gives insight into the molecular structure and hydrogen bonding interactions in the solid state. The R-enantiomer of the title compound (derived from d-phenylalanine) exhibits activity against non-pathogenic and pathogenic mycobacterial strains, whereas the S-enantiomer is inactive. Neither of the enantiomers and the racemate of the title compound shows cytotoxicity against various mammalian cells.

Light is a determining factor in the discoloration of plastics, and photodegradation processes can affect the molecular structures of both the polymer and colorants. Limited studies focused on the discoloration of heritage plastics in conservation science. This work investigated the discoloration of red historical polyethylene (PE) objects colored with PR 48:2 and PR 53:1. High-density and low-density PE reference polymers, neat pigment powders, and historical samples were assessed before and after accelerated photoaging. The applied methodology provided insight into the individual light-susceptibility of polyethylenes, organic pigment lakes, and their combined effect in the photoaging of historical plastic formulations. After light exposure, both PE references and historical samples yellowed, PR53:1 faded, and PR 48:2 darkened; however, both organic pigments faded severely in the historical samples. This highlights the role played by the plastic binder likely facilitating the pigment photofading. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry techniques—EGA-MS, PY-GC/MS, and TD-GC/MS—were successfully employed for characterizing the plastic formulations and degradation. The identification of phthalic compounds in both aged β-naphthol powders opens new venues for studies on their degradation. This work’s approach and analytical methods in studying the discoloration of historical plastics are novel, proving their efficacy, reliability, and potentiality.

The evaluation of design concepts is a time consuming and resource intensive process. Crowdsourcing evaluations has been examined in previous work as a means to reduce the need for expert raters, while achieving similar evaluation results. This paper examines the impact of empathically priming novice raters on their evaluation of alternative design concepts. The rating system is based on a pairwise comparison method that requires minimal training of novice raters. In a pilot study the pairwise method for crowdsourcing evaluations is compared with crowdsourced evaluations using non-pairwise rating scales and with the evaluations of expert raters. The primary study incorporates written and empathic priming strategies to determine their impact on novice raters’ evaluation of concepts. Raters are asked to consider several criteria, including novelty, feasibility, clarity (of the concept), usefulness, ease of use, and overall worthiness of further development. Results offer insight into the criteria that are most relevant to novice raters and whether empathic priming has a significant effect on those evaluations.

Recently there has been a great deal of interest and associated research into aspects of the coordination chemistry of lanthanides and bismuth—elements that show intriguing common features. This work focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a novel bismuth(III) polynuclear metallamacrocyclic complex derived from aminohydroxamic acid, in order to compare the coordination ability of Bi3+ with the similarly sized La3+ ions. A polynuclear tyrosinehydroximate Bi(OH)[15-MCCu(II)Tyrha-5](NO3)2 (1) was obtained according to the synthetic routes previously described for water-soluble Ln(III)-Cu(II) 15-MC-5 metallacrowns. Correlations between structural parameters of Bi(III) and Ln(III) complexes were analyzed. DFT calculations confirmed the similarity between molecular structures of the model bismuth(III) and lanthanum(III) tyrosinehydroximate 15-metallacrowns-5. Analysis of the electronic structures revealed, however, stronger donor-acceptor interactions between the central ion and the metallamacrocycle in the case of the lanthanum analogue. Thermochromic properties of 1 were studied.
