The work presents a study of the formation of manganese oxide aerogels in the process of thermal decomposition of manganese carbonyls in oxygen-enriched supercritical CO2 at different temperatures. The morphology of the aerogels was studied by means of electron microscopy; the porous structure was investigated through the analysis of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. The process was observed in an optical high-pressure view-cell.

This paper describes our recent achievements in fabricating various kinds of nanowires of silicon-based materials including beta iron-silicide, silicon carbide, and silicon germanium. Some of them can be grown directly at one-step process, while the others can be fabricated using nanowire templates. We discuss their structures, growth mechanisms, and properties based on electron microscopy observations.

Polystyrene (PS) spheres encapsulated core-shell composites of SiO2or TiO2nanoparticles were prepared by the spray drying technique and hollow spheres of SiO2or TiO2nanoparticles were then derived by removing the PS cores with calcinations. The PS spheres were dispersed into the SiO2or TiO2colloids, forming a suspension and then the suspensions were sprayed to form micrometer-sized droplets, as the droplets rush through the drying chamber, the PS spheres were encapsulated into the core of SiO2or TiO2particles due to the high temperatures and the instant evaporation, obtaining PS@SiO2, PS@TiO2or PS@SiO2/TiO2core-shell composites. After removing the PS core by calcination at 550°C, SiO2or TiO2hollow spheres were then derived. The influence of drying temperature, the concentration of the SiO2or TiO2particles and the ratio of PS sphere to the particles on the structures and specific surface area of the hollow spheres were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements.

Pore structure characteristics and the effect of lithotype and maceral on pore for three types of high-volatile bituminous coals from Binchang area were investigated by combined low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and maceral analysis. The low temperature N2 adsorption/desorption test results show that: micropores are more abundant than transitional pores with high BET surface area; two types of pore structures can be identified by adsorption/desorption isotherms; Pore morphology is mainly represented by well-connected, ink-bottled, cylindrical and parallel plate pores. NMR T2 distributions at full saturated condition are apparent or less obvious trimodal and three types of T2 distributions are identified; Seepage pores are better developed when compared with the middle-high rank coal. Further research found that the three coal lithotypes are featured by remarkably different pore structure characteristics and maceral contents of coal are linearly correlated to some of pore structure parameters.

Mesoporous silicas SBA-15 are modified with β-Cyclodextrins (β-CD) by simple grafting method. β-CD functionalized SBA-15 was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the applicability of it is investigated through studying the adsorption properties of clenbuterol. It showed better adsorption capacities of clenbuterol than pure SBA-15. β-CD functionalized SBA-15 material has the potential applications in the treatment of clenbuterol contamination in food and environment science.

AbstractEpitaxial ReSi1.75 thin films of variable thickness between 15nm and 150nm have been prepared in an one step process by Facing Target Sputtering (FTS) onto heated (100) and (111)Si and SOS wafers. The epitaxial relations and film structure have been investigated by Xray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Epitaxial growth was found at a substrate temperature of 1070K. Thermoelectric properties were measured between 100K and 450K and compared to the transport behavior of bulk ReSi1.75 and polycrystalline films. A distinct dependence of both the conductivity and thermopower was found on the film thickness, on unintentional doping and on the film structure. The results show that epitaxial ReSi1.75 films prepared by FTS can be a basis for further investigations of thermoelectric silicide/silicon multilayers.

Microporous xerogels were prepared by polycondensation of pyrogallol with formaldehyde catalyzed by perchloric acid in aqueous medium. The samples were characterized by FTIR absorption spectra. The micro-porosity and the specific surface area are characterized by nitrogen adsorption - desorption isotherms. The obtained characteristics depend on the conditions of polycondensation.

The oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) is operated at high temperatures and is a highly exothermic reaction; thus, hotspots form on the catalyst surface during reaction unless the produced heat is removed. It is crucial to control the heat formed because surface hotspots can degrade catalytic performance. Herein, we report the preparation of Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiC catalysts using SiC, which has high thermal conductivity and good stability at high temperatures, and the catalyst was applied to the OCM. Two Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiC catalysts were prepared by wet-impregnation on SiC supports having different particle sizes. For comparison, the Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiO2 catalyst was also prepared by the same method. The catalysts were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption–desorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The transformation of SiC into α-cristobalite was observed for the Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiC catalysts. Because SiC was completely converted into α-cristobalite for the nano-sized SiC-supported Mn2O3-Na2WO4 catalyst, the catalytic performance for the OCM reaction of Mn2O3-Na2WO4/n-SiC was similar to that of Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiO2. However, only the surface layer of SiC was transformed into α-cristobalite for the micro-sized SiC (m-SiC) in Mn2O3-Na2WO4/m-SiC, resulting in a SiC@α-cristobalite core–shell structure. The Mn2O3-Na2WO4/m-SiC showed higher methane conversion and C2+ yield at 800 and 850 °C than Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiO2.

Globally, the adverse environmental impact of waste plastics is of increasing concern. Most plastics are naturally non-degradable, thus imposes serious environmental threats, especially, to marine life. Upcycling such waste into valuable contents is an effective approach to managing waste plastics. In this study, graphene is synthesized from waste polystyrene (PS) by thermal decomposition at different temperatures (500, 600, 700, 800, 900 and 1000 °C) for two hours reaction time in a stainless steel autoclave. The synthesized materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-disperse X-ray analysis (EDS) and surface area by using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). The yield of the product materials was investigated and optimized against the temperature. The synthesized graphene is considered a promising material for many applications, especially in environmental applications.
