The article reveals the peculiarities of the use of athletics to improve the physical fitness of students of higher education institutions. The influence of physical education on motivation for athletics is also revealed. It is established that the use of means and methods of athletics in physical education classes in higher education institutions leads to a significant increase in the level of physical fitness. It was found that one of the factors influencing the growth of student morbidity and low level of their physical development is the lack of physical activity. The combination of these factors determines the level of physical fitness and efficiency, which, in turn, are important indicators of professional training of students. However, the use of other methods of strength development, the method of unsatisfactory efforts with a normalized number of repetitions, the method of unsatisfactory efforts with the maximum number of repetitions, the method of dynamic efforts, the shock method, the method of static efforts, the static-dynamic method, the method of circular training, the game method has a beneficial effect on the development of all physical qualities. The decrease in the indicators of general physical fitness is facilitated by the fact that during the holidays, students practically do not go in for sports on their own. As the analysis of the survey has shown, only students of higher educational institutions are independently engaged in physical culture.

It is determined that shaping is one of the types of health gymnastics. The main feature of the method of shaping is that it is the most effective way to rebuild the human body through exercise, as well as improving the overall physical fitness of students in higher education. Preservation and strengthening of public health in the current state of society with its inherent socio-economic characteristics and significant demand for values is interdisciplinary and is the subject of medical, biological, pedagogical, psychological, social and a number of other basic sciences. The solution to these problems is facilitated by shaping classes, which help to improve the physical perfection of female students. Today, shaping belongs to health systems that use gymnastic exercises and adhere to the principle of their strict regulation. Harmonious physique is one of the main signs of human health, because it is known that the shortcomings of the physique complicate the work of internal organs. The method of shaping is largely determined by the direction of the program, an individual approach to each person depending on age, body type, their functional and physical condition. Individualization should be aimed at correcting the physique in eliminating inconsistencies with the model level within a genetically determined somatotype.

It has been proven that it is athleticism that is the most popular sport among college students. The article reveals the influence of athleticism on the level of physical fitness of students of higher educational institutions in the process of physical education classes. The analysis of literary sources showed a tendency towards a constant deterioration in the state of health of young people, a decrease in motivation for physical education classes. Therefore, the issue of introducing recreational classes with athleticism as the need to improve the means of physical education, taking into account gender and age, individual characteristics, needs, motives and interests of students, is urgent. The most acute problem facing high school today is the serious deterioration of the health of student youth. This is especially true for freshmen due to their lack of experience in adapting to the new socio-economic and psychological-pedagogical status of the student. In addition, in the context of quarantine and distance learning, the issue of youth health is quite relevant. In today's conditions of education, the system of physical education in higher education institutions does not solve its main and important task - maintaining the health and physical fitness of students at the appropriate level. It does not take into account the interests and needs of students, does not contribute to sustainable motivation for physical activity, the formation of physical culture of the student's personality.
